This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the instrument cluster assembly in a 2017 Maserati Levante, including dashboard trim removal and electrical disconnection.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require window calibration after reconnection.
The instrument cluster contains sensitive electronic components. Handle by the edges only and avoid touching circuit boards.
ℹ️This vehicle may require dealer programming or VIN coding after cluster replacement to restore full functionality.
Wait at least 15 minutes after battery disconnection before working near airbag components to allow capacitor discharge.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle interior.
  3. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal. Wait 15 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge.
  4. Adjust steering wheel to lowest position and fully extended to provide maximum working clearance.
  5. Protect steering column and dashboard surfaces with soft cloth or towels to prevent scratching during trim removal.

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove upper steering column trim cover
Using plastic trim tools, carefully pry the upper steering column cover starting from the bottom edge. Release the retention clips by applying gentle outward pressure. Once clips are released, lift the upper cover away from the steering column and set aside.
  2. 2
Remove lower steering column trim cover
Locate the T20 Torx screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover (typically 2 screws). Remove these screws and store them safely. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column, releasing any remaining clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors if present for tilt/telescope indicators.
  3. 3
Remove instrument cluster bezel trim panel
Insert plastic trim tools around the perimeter of the instrument cluster bezel (the trim ring surrounding the cluster). Start at the top edge and work around, releasing approximately 8-10 retention clips. Apply steady, even pressure to avoid breaking clips. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel forward and set aside. Be careful not to scratch the instrument cluster lens.
  4. 4
    Remove instrument cluster mounting screws
Locate the four T25 Torx screws securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard support structure (typically one in each corner of the cluster housing). Remove all four screws completely and place them in a magnetic tray. The cluster should now be loose but still connected by wiring harnesses.
  5. 5
Pull cluster forward and access connectors
Carefully pull the instrument cluster straight forward approximately 4-6 inches to access the rear electrical connectors. Support the cluster weight with one hand while working. Use a flashlight to identify all electrical connectors on the back of the cluster. There are typically 3-4 multi-pin connectors depending on equipment level.
  6. 6
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Starting with the largest connector, press the locking tab release (typically red or gray colored) and firmly pull the connector straight back from the cluster. Repeat for all remaining connectors. Note the position and orientation of each connector for reinstallation. If connectors are tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently assist with tab release, being careful not to damage the locking mechanism.
  7. 7
    Remove instrument cluster from vehicle
With all electrical connections disconnected, carefully remove the instrument cluster from the dashboard opening. Keep the cluster level and avoid bumping it against surrounding surfaces. Place the cluster face-up on a clean, padded work surface away from the vehicle.
  8. 8
    Install replacement instrument cluster
Position the new or serviced instrument cluster near the dashboard opening. Verify the cluster orientation (top/bottom) before proceeding. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the rear of the cluster, ensuring each connector locks into place with an audible click. Gently tug each connector to verify secure connection. Carefully guide the cluster into the dashboard opening, ensuring no wires are pinched.
  9. 9
    Secure cluster and reinstall trim
Push the cluster fully into position and reinstall the four T25 Torx screws in each corner, tightening in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Reposition the instrument cluster bezel trim panel, aligning all clips, and press firmly around the perimeter until all clips engage. Reinstall the lower and upper steering column covers, ensuring all clips engage and screws are tightened.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely.
  2. Before starting the vehicle, turn the ignition to the ON position (without starting) and verify the instrument cluster illuminates and displays correctly.
  3. Perform automatic window initialization if required: lower each window fully, then raise fully and hold switch for 2 seconds.
  4. If instrument cluster does not display correctly or shows error messages, dealer programming may be required to VIN-code the new cluster.

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify all instrument cluster gauges sweep through their full range during self-test.
  • Verify all warning lights illuminate during bulb check, then extinguish after engine start (except low fuel or service reminders if applicable).
  • Confirm odometer, trip meters, and all digital displays show correct information.
  • Test all instrument cluster buttons and controls (if equipped) for proper operation including trip reset and menu navigation.
  • Verify speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and temperature gauge respond correctly during a short test drive.
  • Check for any warning messages or diagnostic trouble codes using the vehicle's onboard menu system.
  • Inspect all reinstalled trim panels for proper fitment with no gaps or loose clips.
