Power Steering Pump Pulley

This procedure covers the removal and installation of the power steering pump pulley on a 2017 Maserati Levante with 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine.

• Power steering pump pulley × 1 — Use OEM specification
• Power steering pressure line O-ring × 1 — Use OEM specification
• Power steering line O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Ensure engine is completely cool
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for system discharge
3. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on quick-release fasteners
4. Place drain pan under power steering pump area
5. Take photos of serpentine belt routing for reference

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove serpentine belt
   Using a breaker bar or serpentine belt tool, rotate the belt tensioner clockwise to release tension. Slide the belt off the power steering pump pulley first, then remove from remaining pulleys. Note the belt routing diagram on the radiator support for reinstallation.

   Disconnect power steering pressure line
   Using a line wrench to prevent rounding, loosen and remove the pressure line fitting from the power steering pump. Allow fluid to drain into the pan. Cap or plug the line immediately to prevent contamination. Remove and discard the O-ring from the fitting.
   ⚠Power steering fluid is slippery and can cause falls. Clean up spills immediately

   Disconnect power steering return line
   Using a line wrench, disconnect the return line fitting from the pump. Allow remaining fluid to drain. Remove and discard the O-ring from this fitting as well. Cap or plug the line to prevent contamination.

   Remove pump mounting bolts
   Locate and remove the power steering pump mounting bolts. There are typically three bolts securing the pump to the engine block. Support the pump by hand as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling.

   Remove pump from vehicle
   Carefully maneuver the power steering pump out of the engine bay. You may need to tilt or rotate the pump to clear surrounding components. Place the pump on a clean workbench with the pulley facing upward.

   Remove power steering pump pulley
   Install the power steering pulley puller tool according to manufacturer instructions. The puller should thread into or grip the pulley securely without contacting the pump shaft. Slowly tighten the puller forcing screw to press the pulley off the pump shaft. Do not use impact tools or hammers as this can damage the pump bearing and shaft.
   ⚠️Never strike the pulley with a hammer or use air tools. This will destroy the pump bearing

   Inspect pump shaft and pulley
   Examine the pump shaft for scoring, wear, or damage. Check the old pulley for cracks, worn grooves, or wobble. Clean the pump shaft with a clean shop towel. Ensure the shaft is completely dry before installing the new pulley.

   Install new power steering pump pulley
   Place the new pulley on the pump shaft, ensuring proper alignment. Install the pulley installation tool and thread the forcing screw into the pump shaft. Gradually tighten the tool to press the pulley onto the shaft. The pulley should be pressed on until it is flush with the end of the shaft or matches the depth of the original pulley installation. Use steady, even pressure.
   ⚠️Ensure pulley is properly aligned before pressing on. Misalignment will damage the pump shaft and bearing
   ℹ️The pulley must be pressed to the correct depth. Too shallow and the belt will not track properly; too deep and the pulley may contact the pump body

   Reinstall power steering pump
   Maneuver the pump assembly back into position in the engine bay. Start all three mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper threading. Tighten the mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque.

    Connect power steering lines with new O-rings
    Install new O-rings on both the pressure line and return line fittings. Lightly lubricate the O-rings with clean power steering fluid. Thread the fittings by hand first to ensure proper engagement, then tighten to specification using a line wrench.

    Reinstall serpentine belt
    Route the serpentine belt according to the routing diagram, leaving the tensioner pulley for last. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and slip the belt over the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the tensioner to apply proper tension to the belt. Verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.

    Fill and bleed power steering system
    Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid to the cold fill line. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock several times. Check fluid level and top off as needed. Continue bleeding until no air bubbles are visible in the reservoir and steering operation is smooth.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall engine cover by pressing down on quick-release fasteners until they click
2. Reconnect negative battery cable
3. Check for power steering fluid leaks around all connections
4. Verify serpentine belt alignment on all pulleys

Verification

• Start engine and verify no unusual noises from power steering pump
• Turn steering wheel from lock to lock and confirm smooth operation with no whining or grinding
• Inspect all power steering line connections for leaks while engine is running
• Verify serpentine belt is tracking properly on the new pulley with no slippage or vibration
• Check power steering fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary
