Recirculation Door Actuator

This procedure replaces the HVAC recirculation door actuator, which controls fresh air vs. recirculated air mode in the climate control system.

• Lower dash panel clips (if damaged) × 5 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
2. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait at least 2 minutes.
3. Set steering wheel to straight-ahead position for easier access.
4. Allow HVAC system to reach ambient temperature if recently used.
5. Prepare workspace with adequate lighting and organize removed fasteners by location.

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower passenger kick panel
   Open passenger door fully. Locate and remove the lower kick panel at passenger footwell. Remove T20 Torx screws (typically 3-4 screws) along bottom edge. Gently pull panel away from dash using trim tools to release retaining clips. Disconnect any courtesy light connectors if equipped.

   Remove lower glove box area trim panel
   Open glove box and remove contents. Locate T25 Torx screws securing lower dash trim panel below glove box (typically 4-6 screws). Carefully pull lower trim panel downward and away from dash to release clips. Set panel aside with fasteners attached or organized by location.

   Access HVAC housing lower section
   With lower panels removed, locate the HVAC housing behind the passenger side dash area. Use flashlight to identify the recirculation door actuator mounted on the HVAC housing. The actuator is typically a small rectangular motor with a gear drive visible on the left side of the housing near the firewall.

   Disconnect actuator electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector attached to the recirculation door actuator. Press the connector release tab (typically red or gray) and carefully pull connector straight off actuator. Do not pull on wires. If connector is difficult to access, use a small flat blade screwdriver to depress the release tab while pulling connector.

   Remove actuator mounting screws
   Identify the two or three T20 Torx screws securing the actuator to the HVAC housing. These screws are typically located around the perimeter of the actuator body. Remove screws completely and set aside. Note the orientation of the actuator and position of the drive gear relative to the door linkage before removal.

   Remove failed actuator
   Gently rotate the actuator counterclockwise approximately 15-20 degrees to disengage the drive gear from the recirculation door linkage. Carefully pull actuator away from housing. Inspect the door linkage and gear mechanism for damage or debris. Clean area if necessary.

   Install new recirculation door actuator
   Position new actuator near mounting location. Align the drive gear with the recirculation door linkage arm. The gear teeth should mesh smoothly without forcing. Rotate actuator clockwise to fully engage gear with door mechanism. Ensure actuator sits flush against HVAC housing mounting surface.

   Secure actuator mounting screws
   Install mounting screws and hand-tighten to ensure proper alignment. Using torque wrench, tighten screws to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten as housing is plastic and can crack.

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Push electrical connector firmly onto actuator terminals until it clicks into place. Verify connector is fully seated and locking tab is engaged. Gently tug on connector to confirm secure attachment.

    Reinstall lower dash panels
    Reconnect battery negative terminal temporarily for testing before final reassembly. Start vehicle and test HVAC system operation. Verify recirculation mode activates properly and air flow changes as expected. If operation is confirmed, disconnect battery again. Reinstall lower trim panel below glove box, engaging clips first then securing with T25 Torx screws. Reinstall passenger kick panel, engaging clips and securing with T20 screws. Reconnect any courtesy light connectors.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before reinstalling trim panels.
2. Verify all trim clips are properly engaged before tightening screws to prevent panel gaps.
3. Replace any broken or damaged trim clips to ensure secure panel fitment.

Verification

• Reconnect battery and start vehicle. Allow HVAC system to initialize (approximately 30 seconds).
• Turn on climate control and toggle recirculation button on and off multiple times. You should hear the actuator motor operating and airflow should change between fresh and recirculated air.
• Place hand near fresh air intake vents inside vehicle. When recirculation is OFF, you should feel stronger airflow. When ON, airflow should reduce as system recirculates cabin air.
• Check for any unusual noises from HVAC system during operation, which could indicate improper gear engagement.
• Verify no warning lights or climate control error messages appear on instrument cluster.
