Sunroof Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof switch assembly in the overhead console of a 2017 Maserati Levante with the 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
2. Turn off all electrical accessories and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
3. Open the driver's door to allow interior access during battery disconnect.
4. Locate the battery in the rear cargo area under the floor panel.
5. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 5 minutes before proceeding.
6. Ensure the sunroof is in the fully closed position if functional.
7. Adjust the front seats forward to provide adequate headroom for working overhead.

Procedure

   Disconnect the battery negative terminal
   Access the battery in the rear cargo area by lifting the floor panel. Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt and disconnect the cable. Secure the cable away from the terminal. Wait at least 5 minutes to allow all electrical systems to discharge.

   Remove the overhead console lens cover
   Position yourself in the center of the front seats with adequate lighting. Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry the front edge of the overhead console lens cover starting from the windshield side. Work slowly around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. The cover contains the map lights and sunroof switch assembly. Lower the cover carefully to avoid damaging the wiring harness.

   Disconnect the map light and ambient lighting connectors
   Locate the electrical connectors for the map lights and ambient lighting on the back side of the console lens cover. Press the locking tabs on each connector and gently pull to disconnect. There are typically two connectors: one for the map lights and one for the ambient lighting circuit. Set the lens cover aside in a safe location.

   Remove the sunroof switch mounting screws
   Identify the two Torx screws securing the sunroof switch module to the overhead console housing. These are typically T20 screws located on either side of the switch assembly. Remove both screws completely and retain them for reinstallation. The switch assembly should now be loose but still connected via the wiring harness.

   Disconnect the sunroof switch electrical connector
   Locate the main electrical connector on the back of the sunroof switch assembly. This is a multi-pin connector with a sliding lock tab. Slide the lock tab to the unlock position, then press the release tab while pulling the connector straight out. Avoid pulling on the wires themselves. Remove the old sunroof switch assembly from the vehicle.

   Inspect and prepare the new sunroof switch
   Remove the new sunroof switch from its packaging and verify it matches the original part. Inspect the electrical connector pins for any damage or debris. Check that the switch mechanism operates smoothly through all positions (tilt, slide open, slide close). Verify that any integrated LED indicators are present and undamaged.

   Install the new sunroof switch assembly
   Connect the electrical connector to the back of the new sunroof switch, ensuring the lock tab clicks into place securely. Position the switch assembly into the overhead console mounting location, aligning the screw holes. Install both mounting screws finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment, then torque to specification using a Torx driver and torque wrench.

   Reconnect the console lens cover
   Reconnect the map light and ambient lighting electrical connectors to the overhead console lens cover, ensuring each connector locks securely. Position the lens cover assembly near the overhead console opening, verifying no wires are pinched or twisted. Align the retaining clips with their corresponding slots in the console housing.

   Install the overhead console lens cover
   Starting at the rear edge (towards the back seats), press the lens cover firmly into place to engage the retaining clips. Work your way forward towards the windshield, applying even pressure around the perimeter until all clips are fully seated. You should hear audible clicks as each clip engages. Verify the cover sits flush with no gaps.

    Reconnect the battery negative terminal
    Return to the rear cargo area and reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Ensure the mating surfaces are clean and free of corrosion. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a 10mm wrench and torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal or battery post.
    ⚠Do not overtighten the battery terminal bolt as specified in the torque requirements. Overtightening can crack the battery terminal or damage the post.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panels are securely fastened with no gaps or misalignment.
2. Check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked.
3. Ensure no tools or parts were left in the overhead console area.
4. Return front seats to their normal positions.

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Verify that the map lights and ambient lighting function correctly.
• Test the sunroof switch in all positions: tilt up, tilt down, slide open, and slide close. The sunroof should respond smoothly to all commands.
• Verify that the sunroof auto-close function works by pressing and holding the close button.
• Check that the sunroof one-touch open and one-touch close features operate correctly.
• If the sunroof does not function properly, perform the sunroof calibration procedure using the Maserati diagnostic tool or by following the initialization sequence in the owner's manual.
• Inspect the overhead console for proper fit and finish with no rattles or loose components.
• Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster related to the sunroof system.
