Throttle Body

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the throttle body on a 2017 Maserati Levante with the 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine, including disconnection of electrical connectors and air intake components.

Preparation

1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 5 minutes to allow system capacitors to discharge
4. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on the four corner mounting points

Procedure

1. 1

   Access throttle body area
   Remove any decorative covers or panels obstructing access to the throttle body. The throttle body is located on the driver's side of the engine bay, mounted to the intake plenum downstream of the turbocharger system.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the throttle body electrical connector on the side of the throttle body housing. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.

   Loosen air intake hose clamps
   Locate the air intake hose clamp on the inlet side of the throttle body. Loosen the clamp using a flat blade screwdriver or 8mm socket. Do not fully remove the clamp at this time.

   Remove air intake ducting
   Carefully slide the air intake duct off the throttle body inlet. You may need to gently twist while pulling to break any seal. Move the ducting aside to provide clear access to the throttle body mounting bolts.

   Disconnect secondary hoses and connections
   Check for any vacuum lines, breather hoses, or PCV connections attached to the throttle body. On the Levante V6, there is typically a small breather hose on the side. Carefully disconnect by squeezing the quick-release tab or loosening the small clamp.

   Remove throttle body mounting bolts
   Using a T25 Torx bit or appropriate socket, remove the four throttle body mounting bolts in a cross pattern. Support the throttle body with one hand as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling.

   Remove throttle body assembly
   Carefully pull the throttle body straight away from the intake manifold. The gasket may stick, requiring gentle twisting motion. Once removed, immediately cover the intake manifold opening with a clean rag to prevent debris entry.

   Clean mounting surface
   Remove and discard the old throttle body gasket. Thoroughly clean the intake manifold mounting surface using a plastic scraper and clean rag. Ensure no gasket material or debris remains. Do not allow any material to fall into the intake manifold.

   Inspect and prepare new throttle body
   If installing a new throttle body, inspect the bore and butterfly valve for any shipping protection or debris. Do NOT manually open the throttle plate. Verify the new gasket matches the old one in size and bolt hole alignment.

    Install new gasket and throttle body
    Position the new gasket on the intake manifold, ensuring proper alignment with all bolt holes. Carefully align the throttle body with the gasket and mounting holes, then hand-thread all four mounting bolts to prevent cross-threading.

    Torque throttle body bolts
    Using a torque wrench, tighten the four throttle body mounting bolts to 10.0 Nm (7.0 lb-ft) in a cross pattern. Start with the top-left bolt, then bottom-right, then top-right, and finally bottom-left. Make a second pass in the same pattern to ensure even seating.

    Reconnect air intake ducting
    Slide the air intake duct onto the throttle body inlet, ensuring it is fully seated. Position the hose clamp over the connection point and tighten to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft). Ensure the duct is properly aligned and not kinked.

    Reconnect electrical and vacuum connections
    Reconnect the throttle body electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Reconnect any breather hoses or vacuum lines removed earlier. Verify all connections are secure.

    Perform throttle body relearn procedure
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine for 30 seconds, then OFF for 10 seconds. Repeat this cycle 3 times. This allows the ECU to recognize the new throttle body position. For complete adaptation, a Maserati-compatible diagnostic tool may be required.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning mounting grommets and pressing down firmly at each corner
2. Double-check all electrical connections and hose clamps are secure
3. Verify no tools or rags were left in the engine bay

Verification

• Start the engine and allow it to idle. The idle may be rough initially for 30-60 seconds as the ECU adapts
• Check for any vacuum leaks around the throttle body by listening for hissing sounds
• Verify smooth throttle response by gently pressing the accelerator pedal with the vehicle in Park
• Use a diagnostic scan tool to check for any throttle position sensor fault codes
• Perform a test drive to confirm smooth acceleration and no hesitation or surging
• Verify engine idle returns to normal specifications (typically 650-750 RPM when fully warm)
