The 2018 Armada rides on Nissan's Y62 patrol platform with the proven VK56VD 5.6L V8, generally solid but facing specific issues around transmission cooling, timing components, and occasional catastrophic engine failures tied to oil consumption and pre-ignition.
Transmission Oil Cooler Failure Leading to Coolant-ATF Contamination
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid appears milky or strawberry-colored on dipstick, Overheating transmission or engine temperature swings, Harsh shifting or slipping after cooler breach, White smoke from exhaust if coolant enters transmission
Fix: Replace transmission oil cooler, flush both cooling system and transmission completely, sometimes requires transmission rebuild if contamination sat too long. 8-16 hours labor depending on damage extent.
Estimated cost: $1,200-5,500
Timing Chain Stretch and Guide Wear (VK56VD)
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle from front of engine lasting 5-15 seconds, Check engine light with timing correlation codes (P0011, P0021), Reduced power and fuel economy, Metallic rattling under acceleration
Fix: Replace primary and secondary timing chains, guides, tensioners, and VVT components. Front cover removal required, 12-16 hours labor. Critical to address before chain skips and causes valve-to-piston contact.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,200
Catastrophic Engine Failure from Oil Consumption and Pre-Ignition
Rare · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Rapid oil consumption (1 quart per 1,000-2,000 miles), Metallic knocking or pinging under load, Sudden loss of power followed by catastrophic noise, Blue smoke from exhaust on startup or acceleration, Low oil pressure warning before complete failure
Fix: Complete engine rebuild or replacement with short block. Piston ring wear, scored cylinder walls, or spun bearings require full teardown. 24-35 hours labor for rebuild, 16-22 hours for short block swap.
Estimated cost: $6,500-12,000
Transmission Mount Collapse (Rear Mount)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Vibration at idle in gear that lessens in Park/Neutral, Excessive driveline movement visible during hard acceleration, Transmission tunnel heat or noise transmission into cabin
Symptoms: Hesitation or stumble during acceleration, Hard starting after sitting overnight, Limp mode or reduced power warnings, Rough idle with fuel pressure fluctuations
Fix: Replace in-tank fuel filter assembly and flush fuel system. Requires dropping fuel tank. 3-5 hours labor. Often follows bad fuel or rust contamination in older tanks.
Estimated cost: $600-1,100
Backup Camera Failure (Recall-Related)
Occasional · low severity
Symptoms: Intermittent or complete loss of backup camera display, Blue screen or 'camera unavailable' message when in Reverse, Distorted or flickering backup camera image, Water intrusion visible behind camera lens
Fix: Replace backup camera assembly and update software per TSB. NHTSA recall 19V-723 addresses some units. 1-2 hours labor if not covered under recall.
Estimated cost: $400-750
Owner tips
Monitor oil consumption religiously—check every 500 miles and keep detailed logs; if consumption exceeds 1 quart per 3,000 miles, investigate immediately to avoid catastrophic failure
Service transmission fluid every 60,000 miles with Nissan Matic-S ATF and inspect cooler lines for seepage or discoloration
Address timing chain noise at first sign—waiting typically doubles repair cost when guides fragment and damage covers
Use Top Tier fuel exclusively; VK56VD direct-injection system is sensitive to deposits causing pre-ignition
Inspect transmission and engine mounts annually starting at 60,000 miles; rubber deteriorates faster in hot climates
Solid platform if transmission cooler and timing components check out clean, but oil consumption history is make-or-break—walk away if owner can't prove consistent 5,000-mile oil changes with no consumption issues.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA · 19V654000
2019-09-12
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
