The 2019 Maxima with VQ35DE and CVT8 is generally solid but suffers from the notorious Nissan Jatco CVT reliability issues and some oil consumption problems on higher-mileage units. The engine itself can be durable if oil changes are religious, but catastrophic internal failures do occur.
Symptoms: Shuddering or lurching during acceleration, especially from a stop, Whining or grinding noise from transmission, Hesitation when accelerating or shifting, Complete loss of forward gears or limp mode, CVT fluid overheating warnings on dash
Fix: Jatco CVT8 replacement or rebuild. Early symptoms sometimes respond to fluid flush with Nissan NS-3 fluid (2-3 hours labor), but most cases at higher miles need full replacement (8-10 hours labor). Remanufactured units common. Some owners report repeat failures even after replacement.
Estimated cost: $3,500-6,500
Engine Oil Consumption / Internal Engine Damage
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Burning a quart or more of oil between changes, Blue smoke from exhaust on startup or acceleration, Check engine light with misfire codes, Knocking or ticking noise from engine, Catastrophic failure: metal shavings in oil, loss of compression
Fix: Minor cases may limp along with frequent top-offs. Severe cases require piston ring replacement (15-20 hours) or full engine rebuild/replacement (20-30 hours). Piston ring jobs often uncover cylinder scoring requiring bore work or short block swap. This VQ35DE generation has known issues with ring land failure under sustained high load.
Estimated cost: $4,000-9,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Pink or red fluid pooling under vehicle (CVT fluid is red, not ATF), Transmission overheating warnings, Low CVT fluid level on dipstick check, Cooler lines wet or corroded at radiator connections
Fix: Replace external CVT cooler lines and/or internal radiator cooler section. Often both lines and seals fail together due to galvanic corrosion. 3-5 hours labor includes fluid refill and relearn procedure. Critical to address quickly as low CVT fluid accelerates transmission death.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
Transmission Motor Mounts Collapse
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Excessive vibration at idle, especially with A/C on, Visible engine movement when revving in Park, Harsh engagement into gear
Fix: Replace one or more engine/transmission mounts, most commonly the front torque mount. 2-4 hours labor depending on which mounts are bad. Hydraulic mounts fail internally and leak fluid. Common wear item on CVT-equipped Nissans due to drivetrain weight and vibration characteristics.
Estimated cost: $400-800
Backup Camera Failure / Intermittent Display
Occasional · low severity
Symptoms: Backup camera shows 'unavailable' or blank screen, Intermittent operation, works only sometimes, Image freezes or distorts, Lines/static on camera display
Fix: Usually the camera module itself fails, mounted in the rear fascia. Check wiring harness first for corrosion (especially in salt-belt states), then replace camera. 1-2 hours labor. NHTSA recall exists for some units but may not cover all failure modes.
Estimated cost: $300-600
Fuel Filter Clogging (in-tank pump module)
Rare · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000+ mi
Symptoms: Hard starting after sitting overnight, Loss of power under acceleration or uphill, Engine stumbling or hesitation, Check engine light with fuel trim or low fuel pressure codes
Fix: Nissan uses a lifetime in-tank filter as part of the fuel pump module. When it clogs (rare but happens with contaminated fuel or neglect), entire pump assembly needs replacement. 2-3 hours labor, requires dropping tank or accessing through trunk floor panel depending on tech preference.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Owner tips
Change CVT fluid every 30,000-40,000 mi with Nissan NS-3 spec fluid only — not doing this is asking for transmission failure by 100k
Monitor oil consumption religiously after 60k miles; burning a quart between changes is early warning sign
Avoid sustained high-speed driving or towing — CVTs and VQ35DE oil consumption both worsen under load
Inspect transmission cooler lines annually for seepage starting at 50k miles
Buy one under 60k miles with documented CVT fluid changes, or budget $4-6k for eventual transmission replacement — otherwise shop elsewhere.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA · 19V654000
2019-09-12
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
