The 2019 Pathfinder with the VQ35DE V6 largely avoids the catastrophic CVT failures of earlier models, but faces expensive engine internal failures and transmission cooler problems that can still leave you stranded or out thousands of dollars.
CVT Transmission Oil Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission overheating warnings on dash, Coolant mixing with CVT fluid (strawberry milkshake fluid), Sudden transmission slipping or failure to engage, Coolant loss with no visible external leaks
Fix: Replace internal oil cooler and flush both cooling system and CVT fluid. Often requires transmission rebuild if contamination occurred. 8-12 hours labor if caught early, 18-25 hours if transmission damaged.
Estimated cost: $1,800-$6,500
Piston Ring Land Failure / Piston Cracking
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 miles or worse), Blue smoke from exhaust on cold start or acceleration, Loss of compression in one or more cylinders, Check engine light with misfire codes (P0300 series), Metallic knocking noise from engine
Fix: Requires complete engine disassembly to replace pistons and rings, often finding cracked ring lands on cylinders 2 and 5. Many shops recommend short block replacement instead due to labor overlap. 25-35 hours labor for internal rebuild.
Estimated cost: $4,500-$8,000
Transmission Mount Collapse
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Excessive vibration at idle in gear, Visible sagging of transmission when inspected from below, Harsh engagement into gear
Symptoms: Rattling noise from front of engine on cold start that disappears when warm, Check engine light with cam/crank correlation codes (P0011, P0021), Rough idle or poor performance, Metal shavings in oil
Fix: Requires timing cover removal and replacement of guides, tensioners, and chains. If caught late, valve damage may occur requiring head work. 12-16 hours labor for chains and guides only.
Estimated cost: $2,200-$3,800
Head Gasket Seepage (Both Banks)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: External coolant weeping from head/block interface, Slow coolant loss requiring top-offs every few months, White residue visible on engine block below heads, Occasional overheating under heavy load
Fix: Replace head gaskets on both banks. Often combined with head resurfacing if warpage is present. 14-18 hours labor for both sides.
Estimated cost: $2,800-$4,200
ABS/VDC Module Communication Failures
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: ABS, VDC, and SLIP warning lights all illuminated together, Loss of traction control and stability control functions, Codes C1130, C1145 stored in ABS module, Intermittent issues that resolve with ignition cycle
Fix: Often caused by internal ABS module fault or corroded connector pins. Module replacement requires programming. 2-3 hours labor plus potential tow to dealer for programming.
Estimated cost: $1,200-$2,000
Owner tips
Change CVT fluid every 30,000 miles using only Nissan NS-3 fluid to maximize cooler and transmission life
Monitor oil consumption carefully; if burning more than 1 qt per 3,000 miles, investigate immediately before piston damage worsens
Use quality full-synthetic 5W-30 oil and avoid extended drain intervals on the VQ35DE
Inspect transmission mount annually after 60,000 miles; replacement is cheap insurance against driveline damage
Pass on high-mileage examples unless you have full service records showing CVT fluid changes and no oil consumption issues; catastrophic engine and transmission failures are too common and expensive to gamble.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, and 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and unrepaired, or inspected and determined to not need a repair, under recall number 18V-601. In addition, this recall expands the previous population. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.
Consequence: A brake fluid leak on the circuit board may result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator, free of charge. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be during summer 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
