The 2007 Sentra is a reliable economy car overall, but the CVT transmission and pre-catalytic converter failures dominate the problem list. The 2.0L is generally more durable than the 2.5L, which has serious piston/ring consumption issues.
CVT Transmission Failure (RE0F06A)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Whining or grinding noise during acceleration, Hesitation or shuddering when accelerating from stop, Sudden loss of power or limp mode, Transmission overheating warnings, Slipping between 40-60 mph
Fix: CVT replacement or rebuild required. Transmission cooler often fails first, contaminating CVT fluid and destroying internal components. Aftermarket units run $1,800-2,500, dealer reman $3,500+. Labor is 8-12 hours due to subframe drop. External cooler upgrade recommended on replacement.
Estimated cost: $3,200-5,800
Pre-Catalytic Converter Failure and Piston Ring Damage (2.5L QR25DE)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Rattling from engine bay on cold start, Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 mi or worse), Blue smoke from exhaust on startup or acceleration, Check engine light with catalyst efficiency codes (P0420), Loss of power and rough idle
Fix: Pre-cat breaks apart internally, ceramic debris gets sucked into cylinders and scores cylinder walls/rings. Requires engine rebuild with new pistons, rings, honing, and valve job. Some owners replace entire short block. 20-30 hours labor. The 2.0L doesn't have this design flaw.
Estimated cost: $4,500-7,500
Engine Oil Consumption Without Visible Leaks (2.5L)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Oil light comes on between changes, Burning oil smell but no leaks on ground, Blue-tinted exhaust smoke under load, Fouled spark plugs
Fix: Piston ring flutter and worn ring lands are common on QR25DE. Early stages can be managed with high-mileage oil and frequent top-offs. Eventually requires engine rebuild as above. Monitor oil every 500 miles religiously.
Estimated cost: $4,000-7,000
Transmission Mount Failure
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Excessive vibration at idle in gear, Transmission sags visibly when inspected from below
Fix: Hydraulic transmission mount collapses, especially with CVT weight. Replacement is straightforward, 1-1.5 hours with proper support. OEM mounts last longer than aftermarket.
Estimated cost: $200-350
Mass Airflow Sensor Contamination
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Rough idle and stalling at stops, Poor fuel economy (3-5 mpg drop), Hesitation during acceleration, Check engine light with P0101 or P0171/P0174 codes
Fix: MAF sensor gets contaminated from oiled aftermarket air filters or age. Clean with MAF-specific cleaner first (free fix, 10 minutes). If no improvement, replace sensor. 0.3 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $150-280
Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Wear
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking over bumps from front end, Wandering or loose steering feel, Uneven tire wear on inside edges, Alignment won't hold settings
Fix: Rubber bushings deteriorate, especially in salt states. Replace both lower control arms as complete assemblies (bushings pressed in are more labor). 2-3 hours labor, alignment required after.
Estimated cost: $400-650
Brake Master Cylinder Leak (Recall Related)
Occasional · high severity
Symptoms: Soft or spongy brake pedal feel, Brake pedal slowly sinks to floor under steady pressure, Brake fluid level drops without visible external leaks, Brake warning light illuminated
Fix: Internal seal failure allows fluid to bypass into booster. Covered under recall campaign, but check if already performed. If out of recall, master cylinder replacement is 2-3 hours including bench bleeding and system bleed.
Estimated cost: $0 (recall) or $350-550
Owner tips
If buying a 2.5L, pull the dipstick and check oil level with engine running—low oil is a red flag for ring damage already present
CVT fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles despite 'lifetime fill' claim—extends CVT life significantly
Inspect pre-cat by tapping exhaust manifold when cold; rattling means debris is present and engine damage likely already started
The 2.0L (base model) avoids the piston ring and pre-cat nightmare; it's the better long-term choice despite less power
If you hear CVT whining, stop driving immediately and have it towed—continuing operation accelerates internal destruction
Buy the 2.0L manual if you can find one; avoid the 2.5L CVT combination unless you have records proving the engine was rebuilt and CVT replaced with an external cooler added.

NISSAN IS RECALLING 169,202 MY 2007-2008 SENTRA PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED ROBERT BOSCH MASTER CYLINDER. DUE TO THE MACHINING IRREGULARITY BY THE SUPPLIER, THE INTERNAL SEAL GROOVE IN THE BODY OF SOME BRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS MAY ALLOW FOR A GAP IN THE GROOVE CONTACT AREA OF THE SEAL. THIS MAY RESULT IN BRAKE FLUID SLOWLY LEAKING FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY, CAUSING THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE.
Consequence: IF THE WARNING LAMP IS IGNORED, ONE OF THE BRAKE CIRCUITS ON THE VEHICLE MAY NOT OPERATE AS DESIGNED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE MASTER CYLINDER/BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY AND IF BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE IS DETECTED, THE MASTER CYLINDER WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 20, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
