The 2010 Panamera S with the 4.8L V8 is plagued by catastrophic engine failure from bore scoring and coolant pipe leaks, plus transmission cooler issues that can destroy the PDK. These aren't minor repairs—engine rebuilds run $20K-30K and transmission failures $8K-15K.
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 mi or worse), Blue smoke on startup or acceleration, Loss of compression, misfires, rough idle, Metallic rattling from lower engine—scored cylinders contacting pistons
Fix: Complete engine rebuild or replacement. Cylinders must be re-sleeved or block replaced, all pistons/rings, bearings inspected. Independent shops: 80-120 hours labor. Some owners opt for used engines, but risk repeating the problem.
Estimated cost: $18,000-32,000
Coolant Pipe Failure (Between Cylinder Banks)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible external leak, Overheating or low coolant warning, White smoke from exhaust if coolant enters combustion chamber, Coolant found in oil pan during service
Fix: Engine must be lifted or partially removed to access coolant crossover pipes in the valley. Replace all plastic coolant pipes/fittings while in there. 25-35 hours labor at indie shops. Often discovered during bore scoring diagnosis.
Estimated cost: $6,000-10,000
PDK Transmission Oil Cooler Line Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid leak at cooler lines (front of car), Harsh shifting or slipping when fluid level drops, Transmission overheating warning, Total PDK failure if driven with low fluid
Fix: Replace transmission oil cooler and lines. If caught early, 6-10 hours labor. If transmission damaged from running dry, full PDK rebuild or replacement required (60-80 hours).
Symptoms: Clunking when shifting from Park to Drive, Vibration at idle or under acceleration, Visible sagging of transmission tailshaft, Difficulty engaging gears smoothly
Fix: Replace transmission mount(s). Requires supporting transmission, removing crossmember. 3-5 hours labor. Often done alongside other transmission work.
Estimated cost: $800-1,500
Fuel Filter Clogging / Fuel System Issues
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Hesitation under hard acceleration, Stumbling at high RPM, Check engine light with lean codes, Difficult cold starts
Fix: Replace fuel filter and inspect fuel pump assembly. Filter is part of in-tank pump module on some units. 4-6 hours labor if pump module replacement needed.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,200
Air Suspension Compressor and Strut Leaks
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Vehicle sagging at one corner or entire side, Compressor runs constantly or excessively, Suspension warning light, Rough ride quality, bottoming out
Fix: Replace air struts (front or rear) and/or compressor. Struts: 3-4 hours each corner. Compressor: 2-3 hours. Many shops recommend replacing struts in pairs.
Estimated cost: $2,500-4,500 (per axle with struts); $1,500-2,500 (compressor)
Owner tips
Check oil consumption religiously—more than 1 qt per 2,000 mi means bore scoring is starting. Walk away from high-consumption examples.
Demand full engine inspection with borescope before purchase; many 2010-2012 Panameras have hidden bore damage.
Service PDK transmission fluid every 40K mi and inspect cooler lines annually—this prevents $15K failures.
Budget $3K-5K annually for maintenance beyond normal wear items; these are complex, expensive cars.
Extended warranty is almost mandatory if buying used—engine or transmission failure will total the car financially.
Only for the brave or wealthy: bore scoring makes the 2010 Panamera S a ticking time bomb, and repair costs exceed the car's value by year 10. Buy a pre-purchase inspection or buy a warranty—preferably both.

The bushing that attaches the gear selector lever to the gearbox may degrade over time, causing the bushing to detach. This condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.
Consequence: If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. Owners are instructed to use the parking brake until their vehicle is repaired. The recall began August 9, 2019. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche's number for this recall is AKB1.
