Charging System Voltage Low

What this code means

The PCM has detected that the charging system voltage is below the acceptable operating range. The alternator is not providing sufficient voltage to maintain the battery charge and power the vehicle electrical systems.

Symptoms

• Check Engine Light
• Battery warning light on
• Dim headlights
• Electrical accessories losing power
• Battery draining

Common causes

• Faulty alternator or voltage regulator
• Worn or slipping serpentine belt
• Poor electrical connections at alternator
• Corroded battery terminals
• Excessive electrical load from accessories

Diagnostic steps

1. Measure charging voltage at battery with engine running (should be 13.5-14.8V)
2. Inspect serpentine belt tension and condition
3. Check alternator wiring connections
4. Test alternator output with load tester
5. Inspect battery cables and terminals
