The 2014 Ram ProMaster City is essentially a Fiat Doblo rebadge with a 2.4L Tigershark engine paired to a 9-speed automatic. The platform suffers from catastrophic engine failures and transmission cooling issues that can total the vehicle, making it a high-risk used purchase.
2.4L Tigershark Engine Failure - Cylinder Head and Piston/Ring Issues
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 mi or worse), White or blue smoke from exhaust on startup, Misfires, rough idle, loss of power, Coolant mixing with oil (milky residue on dipstick or cap), Check engine light with cylinder misfire codes or oil pressure warnings
Fix: Complete engine rebuild or replacement. Head gaskets fail allowing coolant into cylinders, piston rings fail causing oil burning. Many shops recommend short block or reman engine due to core damage. 18-24 labor hours for removal, rebuild/replace, reinstall.
Estimated cost: $5,500-9,500
9-Speed Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission slipping or delayed engagement, Overheating transmission (limp mode activation), Metal shavings in transmission fluid, Pink or milky fluid in coolant reservoir (cooler breach), Hard shifts or refusal to shift
Fix: External oil cooler fails internally, allowing coolant and trans fluid to mix. Requires cooler replacement, full transmission fluid flush (sometimes multiple flushes), radiator inspection. If contamination is severe, transmission rebuild may be necessary. 4-6 hours for cooler and flush, 16-22 hours if trans needs rebuild.
Estimated cost: $800-1,200 (cooler/flush only), $3,500-5,500 (with trans rebuild)
Transmission Mounts Collapse
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive vibration through floor and steering wheel, Clunking when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Banging noise over bumps from engine bay, Visible transmission sag when inspected from below
Fix: Front and side transmission mounts deteriorate prematurely, especially with city driving and cargo loads. Requires lifting powertrain to access. Replace all mounts at once. 2.5-3.5 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $450-750
Fuel Filter and Low Pressure Fuel System Issues
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Hard starting, extended cranking before engine fires, Hesitation or stumble during acceleration, Loss of power under load, Engine stalling at idle after sitting overnight
Fix: In-tank fuel filter clogs, and low-pressure pump can fail. Unlike high-pressure pump failures that throw codes, this creates drivability issues without obvious fault codes. Requires tank drop. 3-4 hours labor for filter and pump inspection.
Estimated cost: $500-900
Crankshaft and Main Bearing Failures
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Deep knocking or rumbling noise from lower engine, Noise increases with RPM, present at all times, Oil pressure warning light or low pressure readings, Metal debris in oil filter and pan
Fix: Oil starvation or bearing material failure leads to crank and main bearing wear. Complete teardown required. Most shops recommend short block replacement rather than just bearings due to core damage. 20-26 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $6,000-10,000
Connecting Rod Bearing Failures
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Loud knocking that varies with engine speed, Sudden catastrophic noise followed by engine seizure, Oil pressure drops rapidly, Check engine light with rod bearing or oil pressure codes
Fix: Rod bearings fail due to inadequate lubrication from oil consumption issues or poor maintenance. Often results in rod punching through block. Engine replacement usually only option. 18-24 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $5,000-8,500
Owner tips
Check oil level every fuel fill-up—these engines burn oil aggressively even when 'healthy'
Inspect transmission fluid color and level every 15,000 mi; pink or milky fluid means immediate cooler failure
Replace transmission fluid every 40,000 mi regardless of 'lifetime fill' claims—this trans runs hot
Avoid extended idle times with cargo loads; transmission overheating accelerates cooler and clutch failures
Run premium fuel occasionally to reduce carbon buildup on intake valves (no direct injection cleaning)
Budget $1,000/year minimum for surprise repairs after 80,000 miles
Hard pass unless under $5,000 and you can wrench yourself—catastrophic engine and transmission failures are too common and expensive to risk as daily transportation.
