Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Ensure charge port door is fully closed and vehicle is not connected to charging equipment
- Wait at least 5 minutes after powering down the vehicle before beginning work
- Locate and disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal in the front compartment
- Gather all necessary tools and replacement parts
- Take photos of charge port area and wiring connections for reference during reassembly
Procedure
- 1Access the charge port door areaOpen the charge port door manually. If the latch is stuck, use the emergency release mechanism located behind the driver's side rear quarter trim panel. Inspect the charge port opening for any visible damage or obstructions.
- 2Remove the charge port door trimUsing a trim removal tool, carefully pry around the perimeter of the charge port door trim panel to release the retaining clips. Start at the bottom edge and work around the sides. Remove the trim panel and set aside, being careful not to damage the paint surface.
- 3Remove the outer charge port assembly screwsLocate and remove the four T25 Torx screws securing the outer charge port housing to the body panel. Support the housing as you remove the final screw to prevent it from dropping.
- 4Access the interior side panelMove to the interior cargo area on the driver's side. Remove the rear quarter panel trim by releasing the push clips along the top edge and pulling the panel away from the body. You may need to remove the rear seat or cargo area panels depending on EDV configuration.
- 5Disconnect the charge port wiring harnessLocate the charge port wiring harness connector behind the interior panel. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull it apart. Note the routing of the harness for reinstallation.
- 6Remove the charge port latch assembly mounting boltsLocate the three 10mm bolts securing the charge port latch assembly to the mounting bracket from the interior side. Remove these bolts while supporting the charge port assembly from the exterior side to prevent it from falling.
- 7Disconnect the latch motor connectorLocate the small electrical connector for the latch motor mechanism. Press the locking tab and disconnect it. If equipped with a secondary lock sensor connector, disconnect that as well.
- 8Remove the charge port latch assemblyCarefully withdraw the entire charge port latch assembly from the exterior side, guiding the wiring harness through the body opening. Inspect the mounting area for damage, corrosion, or debris.
- 9Prepare the new charge port latchUnpack the new charge port latch assembly and compare it to the old unit to ensure correct replacement. Transfer any reusable components if necessary. Feed the wiring harness through the body opening from the exterior side.
- 10Install the new latch assemblyPosition the new charge port latch assembly into the body opening, aligning the mounting holes with the bracket. Ensure the gasket or seal is properly seated to prevent water intrusion.
- 11Secure the latch assemblyFrom the interior side, install the three 10mm mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment, then tighten them evenly in a star pattern to ensure even seating of the assembly.
- 12Reconnect electrical connectionsConnect the latch motor connector and any secondary sensor connectors until you hear a positive click. Then reconnect the main charge port wiring harness connector, ensuring it is fully seated and locked.
- 13Reinstall the charge port housingPosition the outer charge port housing back into place and install the four T25 Torx screws. Tighten them evenly to avoid misalignment of the housing.
- 14Test latch operation before final assemblyReconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Power on the vehicle and use the charge port button or touchscreen to actuate the latch several times. Verify smooth operation and proper locking/unlocking. Disconnect the battery again before continuing.
- 15Reinstall all trim panelsReinstall the interior quarter panel trim, ensuring all clips are properly seated. Reinstall the charge port door trim panel, pressing firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Replace any broken clips with new ones.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify all mounting bolts are properly tightened
- Check that trim panels are flush and all clips are engaged
- Replace any damaged or broken trim clips with new OEM clips
Verification
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal
- Power on the vehicle and verify no warning messages appear on the instrument cluster
- Test the charge port latch operation using both the vehicle button and touchscreen controls multiple times
- Verify the charge port door opens and closes smoothly and locks securely
- Plug in a charging cable to ensure proper engagement and retention by the latch
- Verify the vehicle recognizes the charging connection and begins charging if power is available
- Check that the charge port door can be manually released using the emergency release mechanism
- Inspect all trim panels for proper fitment and secure attachment
