Parking Brake Actuator

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the electronic parking brake actuator on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500, including proper system deactivation and testing procedures.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level, solid ground and place transmission in Park
2. Place wheel chocks at front wheels to prevent vehicle movement
3. Connect 12V power supply to vehicle battery terminals to maintain power during repair
4. Connect diagnostic tool and verify communication with vehicle systems
5. Using diagnostic tool, navigate to EPB service functions and verify system status
6. Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning

Procedure

1. 1

   Retract parking brake actuator electronically
   Using the diagnostic tool, access the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) service menu. Select the 'EPB Retraction Mode' or 'Service Mode' function. Follow on-screen prompts to fully retract the parking brake actuator. Wait for confirmation that actuator is in full retraction position. Do NOT proceed if retraction fails - diagnose electrical or actuator issues first.

   Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal
   Locate the 12V auxiliary battery in the front compartment. Using appropriate socket, loosen and remove the negative terminal clamp. Secure the cable away from the battery post. Ensure 12V power supply is maintaining vehicle systems if preservation of settings is desired. Wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge.

   Raise and support vehicle
   Raise the rear of the vehicle using a floor jack at designated lift points per owner's manual. Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight (approximately 6,000 lbs). Ensure vehicle is stable before working underneath. Remove rear wheels to access brake assembly.

   Locate and access parking brake actuator
   Identify the parking brake actuator mounted to the rear brake caliper. Remove any protective covers or shields that obstruct access using Torx bits. Inspect the actuator mounting area for corrosion or damage. Clean area with brake cleaner if necessary.

   Disconnect actuator electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector on the parking brake actuator. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector straight away from the actuator. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage. If corrosion is present, clean with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry.

   Remove actuator mounting fasteners
   Identify the actuator mounting bolts (typically 2-3 bolts securing actuator to caliper). Using appropriate socket, carefully remove all mounting fasteners. Note the position and orientation of any spacers or washers. Support actuator with one hand while removing final fastener to prevent dropping.

   Remove parking brake actuator
   Carefully withdraw the actuator from the caliper assembly. Note the actuator shaft position and any O-rings or seals present. Inspect the mounting surface on the caliper for damage, corrosion, or debris. Clean mounting surface thoroughly with wire brush and brake cleaner if needed.

   Prepare new actuator for installation
   Remove new actuator from packaging and verify part number matches specification for 2022 Rivian EDV 500. Ensure actuator is in fully retracted position (shaft pulled in). Apply light coating of anti-seize compound to mounting threads only (do NOT apply to shaft or seal areas). Verify all O-rings and seals are properly seated.

   Install new parking brake actuator
   Align the new actuator with the caliper mounting points, ensuring proper orientation. Carefully guide actuator shaft into caliper mechanism. Hand-thread all mounting bolts to prevent cross-threading. Tighten mounting fasteners in a cross pattern to manufacturer specification (torque spec not available in database - consult service manual or use 15-20 ft-lbs as conservative estimate for M8 fasteners).

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Align the electrical connector with the actuator connector port. Push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on connector to verify secure connection. Ensure wiring harness is routed properly and will not contact moving components or heat sources.

    Reinstall protective covers and wheels
    Replace any protective covers or shields removed during disassembly. Ensure all fasteners are properly secured. Reinstall rear wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts in star pattern. Lower vehicle from jack stands and torque lug nuts to specification in proper sequence.

    Reconnect 12V battery
    Reconnect the negative terminal to the 12V auxiliary battery. Ensure clean, tight connection. Torque battery terminal to specification if available. Verify power supply is functioning before proceeding.

    Calibrate parking brake actuator
    Connect diagnostic tool and establish communication with vehicle. Navigate to EPB service functions and select 'Calibration' or 'Initialization' function. Follow all on-screen prompts carefully. The system will cycle the actuator through its full range of motion multiple times. Do not interrupt this process. Wait for confirmation that calibration is complete and successful.

    Clear fault codes and verify operation
    Using diagnostic tool, clear any stored fault codes related to the parking brake system. Cycle the ignition off and back on. Apply and release the parking brake using the vehicle control switch multiple times. Verify smooth operation with no unusual noises. Check diagnostic tool for any new fault codes. Verify EPB warning light operates correctly (illuminates when applied, extinguishes when released).

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
2. Verify all fasteners are tightened to specification
3. Confirm protective covers and shields are reinstalled
4. Double-check wheel lug nuts are properly torqued

Verification

• With vehicle in Park on level ground, apply parking brake and verify it holds vehicle securely
• Release parking brake and verify smooth release with no binding
• Check instrument cluster for any warning lights related to parking brake system
• Using diagnostic tool, verify no active or pending fault codes in EPB system
• Perform test drive in safe area and verify parking brake applies and releases normally during multiple cycles
• Verify parking brake holds vehicle on a moderate incline (perform cautiously with ability to apply service brakes)
• Confirm parking brake auto-releases when accelerator is pressed (if equipped with this feature)
