Sunroof Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof switch assembly on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500 electric delivery van.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Ensure ignition is off and key fob is at least 15 feet away from vehicle
3. Open driver door to access interior
4. Locate 12V battery access panel (typically under driver seat or in rear cargo area on EDV 500)
5. Disconnect negative terminal of 12V battery using appropriate socket
6. Wait minimum 5 minutes for capacitor discharge before proceeding
7. Verify sunroof is fully closed before beginning work

Procedure

1. 1

   Access overhead console assembly
   Position yourself in the driver or front passenger seat with clear access to the overhead console. Identify the sunroof switch location within the overhead console assembly near the front dome lights.

   Remove overhead console lens cover
   Using a plastic trim removal tool, carefully pry at the rear edge of the overhead console lens cover. Work your way around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. The lens cover typically has 4-6 clips holding it in place. Once all clips are released, lower the lens cover to access the fasteners beneath.

   Remove overhead console fasteners
   Locate and remove the T20 Torx screws securing the overhead console assembly to the headliner. There are typically 2-4 screws depending on console configuration. Carefully support the console as you remove the final screw to prevent it from dropping.

   Lower overhead console
   Gently pull the overhead console assembly downward approximately 2-3 inches. Do not pull forcefully as wire harnesses are still connected. Support the console with one hand while working.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate all electrical connectors attached to the overhead console. This typically includes connectors for dome lights, map lights, and the sunroof switch. Press the locking tabs on each connector and carefully pull straight out to disconnect. The sunroof switch connector usually has a gray or black housing with a sliding lock tab.

   Remove overhead console assembly
   With all connectors disconnected, fully remove the overhead console assembly from the vehicle and place it on a clean, padded work surface with the switch side facing up.

   Remove sunroof switch retaining fasteners
   Locate the fasteners securing the sunroof switch to the console housing. These are typically T25 Torx screws accessed from the back side of the console. Remove 2-4 screws as applicable. Note the position and orientation of any spacers or brackets.

   Extract sunroof switch
   From the front side of the console, gently push the sunroof switch assembly through the opening. If resistance is felt, check for additional retaining clips. The switch should slide out of its mounting position once all fasteners are removed.

   Test new sunroof switch (optional)
   Before installation, you may test the new switch assembly by connecting it to the wire harness, temporarily reconnecting the 12V battery, and cycling the ignition to accessory mode. Test all switch positions for proper operation, then disconnect battery again before proceeding with installation.

    Install new sunroof switch
    Position the new sunroof switch assembly in the overhead console opening, ensuring proper orientation with the control surface facing the correct direction. Align the switch with the mounting holes in the console housing.

    Secure sunroof switch
    Install the T25 Torx screws to secure the sunroof switch to the console housing. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern to ensure proper seating. Do not overtighten as you may crack the plastic housing.

    Reinstall overhead console
    Position the overhead console assembly near its mounting location in the headliner. Reconnect all electrical connectors, ensuring each locks with an audible click. Verify connector orientation matches your reference photos. Gently push the console upward into position.

    Secure overhead console
    Install the T20 Torx screws to secure the overhead console to the headliner. Start all screws by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment. Tighten screws snugly but do not overtighten.

    Reinstall lens cover
    Align the overhead console lens cover with the console housing. Press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Verify the cover is fully seated and flush with the surrounding headliner.

    Reconnect battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery and tighten securely. Enter the vehicle and cycle the ignition to ON position. The vehicle may require several seconds to initialize all electronic systems. Check for any warning messages on the instrument cluster.

Reassembly

1. Verify all overhead console trim clips are properly engaged and the assembly sits flush with the headliner
2. Ensure no wire harnesses are pinched or under stress
3. Confirm all trim panels and covers are securely fastened
4. Replace any damaged trim clips identified during disassembly

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON or ACC position and verify overhead console lights function properly
• Test sunroof switch in all positions: tilt up, tilt down, slide open, slide close
• Verify sunroof operates smoothly through full range of motion without binding
• Check that sunroof auto-close and obstacle detection features function correctly if equipped
• Confirm no warning lights or error messages appear on instrument cluster related to sunroof operation
• Test one-touch open and close functions if equipped
• Verify sunroof closes completely and seals properly when in closed position
