This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear door power window regulator assembly on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500 electric delivery van.

Warnings

Disconnecting the 12V battery will require a vehicle reset procedure. Consult Rivian service documentation before proceeding.
The window glass must be properly supported during regulator removal to prevent falling and breakage.
ℹ️This is an electric vehicle. Ensure the high voltage system is in service mode before beginning work near electrical components.
Do not force panel clips as the Rivian interior panels use specific clips that can break easily.

Parts

  • Rear door power window regulator assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Door panel retaining clips (replacement set) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Place vehicle in service mode through the center screen menu system
  3. Disconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  4. Open the rear door fully and protect surrounding painted surfaces with masking tape
  5. Gather all necessary tools and new parts for installation

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove rear door panel
Use trim removal tools to carefully pry out the door panel retaining clips starting from the bottom rear corner. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing approximately 10-12 clips. Once clips are released, lift the door panel upward to disengage it from the upper door frame lip, then disconnect the door handle cable by rotating the cable end 90 degrees and sliding out of the handle mechanism.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate and disconnect all electrical connectors on the door panel including the window switch connector, courtesy light connector (if equipped), and any speaker connectors. Press the locking tabs while pulling connectors straight out. Set the door panel aside in a safe location.
  3. 3
    Remove moisture barrier
Carefully peel back the plastic moisture barrier sheet from the door frame. The Rivian EDV uses a reusable adhesive barrier - peel slowly from one corner to avoid tearing. If the barrier tears or loses adhesion, it must be replaced.
  4. 4
    Lower and secure window glass
Temporarily reconnect the window switch connector and 12V battery. Cycle the ignition to accessory mode and lower the window glass approximately halfway down. Disconnect the battery again. Secure the window glass in this position using window support blocks or wide masking tape attached to the glass and door frame to prevent it from falling.
  5. 5
    Disconnect window motor connector
Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the connector locking tab and disconnect the motor harness. Note the connector routing for reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Detach window glass from regulator
Locate the two bolts securing the window glass to the regulator lift plate through access holes in the door frame. These are typically 10mm bolts. Remove both bolts and carefully separate the glass from the regulator mechanism. Ensure the glass remains securely supported.
  7. 7
    Remove regulator mounting fasteners
Locate all regulator mounting fasteners - typically 4-6 T30 Torx bolts positioned around the regulator assembly frame. On the Rivian EDV, these are usually located at the bottom, middle, and top positions of the regulator rail. Remove all mounting fasteners completely.
  8. 8
    Extract regulator assembly
Carefully maneuver the window regulator assembly out through the large access opening in the door frame. The regulator may need to be rotated and tilted to clear internal door structure. Guide the motor and cable assembly through carefully to avoid snagging on sheet metal edges.
  9. 9
    Install new regulator assembly
Position the new window regulator assembly inside the door cavity. Route it through the access opening in reverse of removal, ensuring the motor connector and cable routing match the original configuration. Align all mounting holes with the door frame mounting points.
  10. 10
    Secure regulator mounting fasteners
Install all regulator mounting fasteners hand-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all fasteners are started, tighten them in a cross-pattern sequence to ensure even mounting pressure. Since no torque specifications are provided, tighten fasteners snugly but do not overtighten to avoid stripping threads in the door frame.
  11. 11
    Attach window glass to regulator
Remove the window support tape or blocks. Align the window glass mounting holes with the regulator lift plate holes. Insert the two mounting bolts and tighten securely. Ensure the glass sits squarely in the regulator mechanism.
  12. 12
    Test window operation
Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Reconnect the 12V battery and cycle the ignition to accessory mode. Test the window operation through its full travel range both up and down multiple times. Verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises. Check that the window seals properly against the weatherstripping at the top position.
  13. 13
    Perform window auto-up/down initialization
The Rivian window control module may require initialization of the auto-up/down function. Roll the window fully down, hold the switch in the down position for 3 seconds, then roll the window fully up and hold the switch in the up position for 3 seconds. Test the one-touch auto functions to verify proper programming.
  14. 14
Reinstall moisture barrier and door panel
Reposition the moisture barrier carefully, ensuring all edges are sealed properly. Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors. Align the door panel with the upper door frame lip and press firmly around all perimeter areas to engage the retaining clips. Reconnect the door handle cable by sliding into position and rotating 90 degrees to lock.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Ensure no tools or parts were left inside the door cavity
  3. Check that all door panel clips are fully engaged with no gaps
  4. Reconnect 12V battery and clear any fault codes using Rivian service procedures if necessary
  5. Perform final function test of all door-mounted controls including window, locks, and speakers

Verification

  • Test window operation through full travel range at least 5 times in both directions
  • Verify one-touch auto-up and auto-down functions work properly
  • Check for proper window alignment in the fully closed position with no gaps at weatherstripping
  • Confirm no rattles or abnormal noises from the door panel or window mechanism
  • Test window anti-pinch function if equipped by placing a soft object in the window path during closing
  • Verify door panel is secure with no loose clips or gaps
  • Check that all door-mounted switches and features function normally
