Replace the brake light switch on a 2023 Rivian EDV 500, which signals brake application to the tail lights and may interface with regenerative braking systems.
Warnings
⚠️This is a safety-critical component. Brake lights are required for legal operation and rear-end collision prevention. Improper installation can result in accidents causing injury or death.
⚠️Electric vehicles have high-voltage systems. Never disconnect the 12V battery without following proper EV shutdown procedures. Failure to do so may cause system damage or electrical shock.
⚠The brake light switch may interface with regenerative braking and traction control systems. Improper installation can affect vehicle stability and braking performance.
⚠Disconnecting the brake light switch may trigger fault codes. Have a diagnostic tool available to clear codes after installation.
ℹ️If you are uncomfortable working with brake system electrical components or vehicle shutdown procedures, seek professional service.

Parts
- Brake light switch × 1 — Use OEM Rivian specification
- Electrical connector seal (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage electronic parking brake
- Place vehicle in Park and remove key fob from cabin
- Perform Rivian shutdown procedure: Press power button twice without brake pedal to enter accessory mode, then hold power button for 3 seconds to fully shut down vehicle
- Wait 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to fully power down
- Open driver's door to access 12V battery disconnect located under driver's seat or in rear cargo area (consult owner's manual for exact location)
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge
- Ensure adequate lighting in driver's footwell area
- Have replacement brake light switch and tools readily accessible
Procedure
- 1Access driver's footwell areaRemove the driver's side lower dashboard trim panel. Locate the plastic trim clips below the steering column. Use trim panel removal tools to carefully pry the lower panel away from the dashboard, starting from the bottom edge and working upward. Disconnect any courtesy light connectors if present. Set panel aside in a safe location.
- 2Locate brake light switchUsing a flashlight, identify the brake light switch mounted on the brake pedal bracket assembly. The switch is typically located at the top of the brake pedal arm where it contacts the pedal pushrod or mounting bracket. On the Rivian EDV 500, the switch will have a two-wire or four-wire electrical connector depending on integration with regenerative braking systems.
- 3Document switch position and wiringBefore removal, take photos or make notes of the switch orientation, mounting position, and wire routing. If available, use a multimeter to test the switch: with the brake pedal released, there should be an open circuit; with pedal depressed, there should be continuity. Note any abnormal readings to confirm switch failure.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the locking tab on the electrical connector attached to the brake light switch. Press the release tab while gently pulling the connector away from the switch body. If the connector is tight, use a wire terminal release tool to carefully disengage the locking mechanism. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
- 5Remove brake light switchThe switch is typically secured by a threaded collar, twist-lock mechanism, or mounting bracket. If threaded, rotate the switch counterclockwise approximately 30-45 degrees to unlock, then pull straight out. If bracket-mounted, remove the retaining clip or fastener (typically 10mm) and slide the switch out of the bracket. Note the exact position and any spacers or washers present.
- 6Inspect mounting areaExamine the brake pedal bracket and switch mounting point for damage, cracks, or wear. Check that the pedal arm moves freely and returns to the rest position properly. Inspect the rubber bumper or contact pad (if equipped) that interfaces with the switch plunger. Replace if worn or damaged.
- 7Prepare new brake light switchRemove the new brake light switch from packaging and compare it to the old switch to verify correct part. Check that any included seals or O-rings are properly seated. If the switch has an adjustable plunger, set it to match the old switch position as documented earlier.
- 8Install new brake light switchInsert the new switch into the mounting bracket or threaded socket, ensuring proper alignment with the brake pedal arm contact point. If threaded, rotate clockwise until snug but do not over-tighten. If bracket-mounted, secure with the retaining clip or fastener. Ensure the switch plunger makes contact with the pedal arm when the pedal is in the rest position.
- 9Connect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the switch terminals and push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Ensure wiring is routed away from moving pedal components and cannot become pinched or abraded.
- 10Adjust switch position if necessaryIf the switch is adjustable, verify proper engagement: With brake pedal released, the switch plunger should be fully depressed (circuit open/lights off). When pedal is pressed approximately 10-15mm, the switch should activate (circuit closed/lights on). Adjust switch position in or out as needed to achieve proper activation point.
- 11Reconnect 12V batteryReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal. Ensure connection is clean and tight. The vehicle may perform initialization sequences when power is restored. Wait for all dashboard warnings to cycle through before proceeding.
- 12Perform initial system testWithout starting vehicle, turn to accessory mode by pressing power button once without brake pedal. Have an assistant observe rear brake lights while you press and release the brake pedal. Verify brake lights illuminate immediately when pedal is pressed and extinguish when released. Test multiple times to ensure consistent operation.
Reassembly
- Reinstall driver's side lower dashboard trim panel, ensuring all clips are properly seated and any courtesy light connectors are reattached
- Verify trim panel is flush and secure with no gaps or rattles
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in the footwell area
Verification
- With vehicle in Park and powered on, press brake pedal and verify brake lights illuminate (have assistant observe or use reflective surface)
- Verify brake lights turn off immediately when pedal is released, with no delay or flickering
- Test cruise control cancel function (if equipped) by engaging cruise and pressing brake pedal - cruise should immediately cancel
- Check instrument cluster for any brake system warning lights or fault codes
- If available, use Rivian diagnostic tool or OBD-II scanner to verify no brake light switch fault codes are present (typical codes: C0238, C0245, or manufacturer-specific codes)
- Perform a test drive in a safe area to verify brake lights function properly during actual braking, including regenerative braking engagement
- Verify shift interlock function: with vehicle on, attempt to shift out of Park without pressing brake pedal - shifter should remain locked
- Confirm that pressing brake pedal allows normal shifting from Park to Drive/Reverse
- Re-verify all brake light functions after test drive to ensure switch maintains proper adjustment under normal operation
