Parts

  • Rear window regulator assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Door panel clip assortment × 1 — Replace any broken clips during removal

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery located in front cabin area
  3. Wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  4. Roll rear window to approximately mid-height position before disconnecting battery if possible
  5. Prepare workspace with protective covering to set door panel on clean surface

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove rear door panel
Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry out the door panel clips starting from the bottom rear corner. Work around the perimeter releasing all clips. Remove any visible T20 Torx screws securing the panel (typically located behind handle bezels and in lower door pockets). Disconnect the door handle cable by rotating the cable end 90 degrees and unhooking from the latch mechanism. Lift door panel up and away from door frame.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate the window switch connector and any other electrical connectors attached to the door panel. Press release tabs and disconnect all connectors. For Rivian EDV models, there may be additional cargo area lighting or fleet management system connectors. Set door panel aside in safe location.
  3. 3
    Remove vapor barrier
Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier sheet to access the window regulator mechanism. The barrier is typically adhered with butyl sealant. Roll back only enough material to access the regulator mounting bolts and electrical connections. Use masking tape to secure the barrier out of the way.
  4. 4
    Support window glass
Use masking tape to secure the window glass in the up position, taping from the glass to the door frame exterior. Alternatively, have an assistant hold the glass or use padded blocks to support it. This prevents the glass from dropping once the regulator is disconnected.
  5. 5
    Disconnect window motor connector
Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the connector lock tab and disconnect the motor from the vehicle harness. Note the routing of the wiring for reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Separate glass from regulator
Remove the T30 Torx bolts securing the window glass to the regulator lift plate. There are typically two bolts accessible through access holes in the door frame. Once bolts are removed, carefully lift the glass slightly to separate it from the regulator mechanism.
  7. 7
    Remove regulator mounting fasteners
Locate and remove all regulator mounting bolts. On the Rivian EDV, there are typically 3-4 mounting bolts using 10mm heads or T30 Torx fasteners securing the regulator assembly to the door frame. Track and guide cables may have separate mounting points that also need to be released.
  8. 8
    Remove failed regulator assembly
Carefully maneuver the regulator assembly out through the access opening in the door frame. The regulator will need to be tilted and rotated to clear the interior door structures. Guide the motor and cable assemblies through carefully to avoid snagging on sharp edges.
  9. 9
    Install new regulator assembly
Position the new regulator assembly into the door cavity, reversing the removal process. Ensure all cables and tracks are properly oriented and not twisted. Guide the motor wiring through to the connector location. Align regulator mounting holes with door frame mounting points.
  10. 10
    Secure regulator mounting fasteners
Install all regulator mounting bolts and tighten securely. Ensure the regulator sits flush against the door frame and all mounting points are engaged. Verify that the regulator tracks are properly aligned vertically and parallel to each other.
  11. 11
    Attach glass to regulator
Lower the window glass into position and align the glass mounting holes with the regulator lift plate. Install the T30 Torx bolts through the access holes and tighten securely. Verify glass is level and sits properly in the door frame channels.
  12. 12
    Reconnect electrical and test function
Connect the window motor electrical connector. Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery. Before reinstalling door panel, test window operation through full up and down travel multiple times. Verify smooth operation with no binding, unusual noise, or hesitation. Check that auto-up and auto-down features function correctly if equipped.

Reassembly

  1. Reposition and press the vapor barrier back into place ensuring complete seal around perimeter
  2. Reconnect all electrical connectors to door panel (window switch, lighting, etc.)
  3. Align door panel with mounting locations and press firmly to engage all clips
  4. Install all T20 Torx screws in their original locations
  5. Reconnect door handle cable by hooking cable end and rotating 90 degrees to lock

Verification

  • Test window operation from both door switches and driver master switch through complete travel range
  • Verify auto-up and auto-down features function correctly without stopping or reversing prematurely
  • Check for proper window sealing against weatherstrip in full-up position
  • Confirm no unusual motor noise or binding throughout travel range
  • Verify door panel is securely fastened with no loose clips or rattles
  • Test all other door panel functions (handles, locks, lighting) to ensure proper reconnection
