This procedure guides you through removing and replacing the dimmer switch (headlight/turn signal stalk or control module) on a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 electric delivery van.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect the 12V battery before working on airbag system components or steering column. Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnection for capacitor discharge.
⚠Do not use excessive force when removing trim panels as they contain reusable push clips that can break.
⚠Rivian vehicles use software-controlled lighting systems. A diagnostic reset or recalibration may be required after switch replacement.
ℹ️The EDV 500 uses a CAN bus controlled dimmer switch. Ensure replacement part is programmed for your specific vehicle configuration.

Parts
- Dimmer switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering column trim panel clips × 4 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle interior
- Open driver's door and keep it open throughout the procedure for easy access
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal located in front compartment
- Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Adjust steering wheel to lowest and furthest forward position for access
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverUse a trim panel removal tool to carefully release the clips securing the lower steering column cover. There are typically 4 clips around the perimeter. Pull the cover away from the column, being careful not to snag any wiring. Set the cover aside on a clean surface.
- 2Remove upper steering column coverLocate and remove two T20 Torx screws at the bottom of the upper steering column cover. Gently pull the upper cover upward and away from the column, releasing the retention clips. Disconnect any ambient lighting connectors if equipped. Set the cover aside.
- 3Document existing wiring connectionsBefore disconnecting any connectors, take photos of the wiring harness routing and connector positions. Note the orientation of any locking tabs. This will aid in proper reassembly and troubleshooting if needed.
- 4Disconnect dimmer switch electrical connectorLocate the main electrical connector on the back of the dimmer switch assembly. Press the locking tab (typically red or gray) and carefully pull the connector straight back away from the switch. If resistance is felt, verify the locking tab is fully depressed before applying additional force.
- 5Remove dimmer switch mounting fastenersLocate the two T25 Torx screws securing the dimmer switch assembly to the steering column bracket. Remove both screws completely and retain them for reinstallation. On some EDV configurations, there may be a 10mm hex bolt at the base of the switch assembly that also requires removal.
- 6Remove dimmer switch assemblyCarefully pull the dimmer switch assembly away from the steering column. Guide the wiring harness through any routing clips or channels. If the switch feels stuck, check for any additional retention clips or fasteners. Do not force the switch as this may damage the column or wiring.
- 7Inspect steering column and mounting pointsWith the dimmer switch removed, inspect the steering column mounting bracket for any damage, cracks, or wear. Check the wiring harness for any chafing, damage, or exposed wires. Clean any dirt or debris from the mounting area using a clean, dry cloth.
- 8Install new dimmer switch assemblyRoute the new dimmer switch wiring harness through the steering column guides and clips. Align the switch assembly with the mounting bracket on the steering column. Ensure the switch is properly oriented with the control stalk extending in the correct direction relative to the steering wheel.
- 9Install dimmer switch mounting fastenersInsert and hand-tighten the two T25 Torx screws through the switch mounting holes into the steering column bracket. If applicable, install the 10mm hex bolt at the base. Tighten the screws in an alternating pattern to ensure even seating. Tighten firmly but do not over-torque as this may crack the plastic housing.
- 10Connect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the dimmer switch terminal and push firmly until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked. Ensure no wires are pinched between the switch body and steering column.
- 11Reinstall upper steering column coverRoute any ambient lighting connectors through the upper cover and reconnect them. Position the upper steering column cover over the column, aligning the mounting points. Press firmly to engage the retention clips. Install the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom and tighten securely.
- 12Reinstall lower steering column coverPosition the lower steering column cover under the column, ensuring all wiring is clear of the mounting area. Press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retention clips. Verify the cover is flush and secure at all points with no gaps.
- 13Reconnect 12V battery and perform system resetReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal in the front compartment. Enter the vehicle and power on the electrical system. The vehicle may require a brief initialization period. Check for any warning messages on the instrument cluster related to lighting or switch functions.
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with clips properly engaged
- Verify no wiring is pinched or stressed by reinstalled components
- Return steering wheel to normal driving position
- Check that all dashboard warning lights function normally after battery reconnection
Verification
- Turn on headlights and verify dimmer switch operates low and high beams correctly
- Test turn signal function in both left and right positions, confirming proper cancellation
- Verify all lighting modes operate correctly including fog lights, daytime running lights, and auto mode if equipped
- Check that instrument cluster properly displays lighting status changes
- Test dimmer control for instrument panel brightness adjustment
- Confirm flash-to-pass function operates correctly by pulling stalk toward driver
- If available, use Rivian diagnostic software to verify no fault codes are present in the body control module
- Take a brief test drive to ensure turn signal auto-cancellation works properly during turns
