This procedure guides you through removing and replacing the HVAC control panel in the center console of a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 delivery van.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect the 12V battery before working on electrical components in electric vehicles to prevent potential shock hazards and system damage.
⚠The HVAC control panel is connected to the vehicle CAN bus system. Ensure ignition is off and battery is disconnected before unplugging any connectors.
⚠Trim panels and clips are fragile. Use proper plastic trim tools to avoid breaking mounting points.
ℹ️Take photos of connector orientations and routing before disconnecting to aid in reassembly.

Parts
- HVAC control panel assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Panel retention clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Ensure ignition is in OFF position
- Open the rear equipment bay and locate the 12V auxiliary battery
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Photograph the center console area and HVAC controls for reference
- Ensure interior temperature is comfortable for working, as HVAC will be non-functional during this procedure
Procedure
- 1Remove lower center console trimStarting at the rear of the center console near the cup holders, carefully insert a trim removal tool between the lower console trim and the console housing. Work around the perimeter to release the retention clips. Once all clips are released, lift the lower trim panel up and away from the console. Set aside in a safe location.
- 2Remove center console side panelsLocate the side panels on both driver and passenger sides of the center console. Using a trim removal tool, release the clips securing each side panel. Start from the bottom and work upward. Remove both panels to expose the side mounting points of the HVAC control module housing.
- 3Disconnect climate control connectorsLocate the wire harness connectors behind the HVAC control panel. There will be two main connectors: a larger multi-pin connector for power and CAN bus communication, and a smaller connector for backlighting. Press the release tabs on each connector and carefully pull straight back to disconnect. Label connectors with tape if needed for identification during reassembly.
- 4Remove upper dashboard trim panelThe upper section of the center dashboard trim that surrounds the HVAC controls must be removed. Starting at the top edge near the windshield, use a trim tool to gently pry up the panel. Work from side to side, releasing the hidden clips along the top edge and sides. Once loose, carefully lift the panel up and forward to clear the HVAC control module.
- 5Remove HVAC control panel mounting fastenersUsing a T25 Torx driver, remove the four mounting screws securing the HVAC control panel to the dashboard structure. Two screws are typically located at the top corners and two at the bottom corners of the control module housing. Keep these screws organized as they may be different lengths.
- 6Disconnect temperature sensor cable (if equipped)Some EDV 500 configurations have a cabin temperature sensor cable connected to the back of the HVAC control unit. If present, locate the small connector and carefully disconnect it by pressing the release tab and pulling gently. This cable may be routed along the side of the control unit.
- 7Remove HVAC control panel assemblyWith all fasteners and connectors removed, carefully pull the HVAC control panel forward and out of the dashboard opening. Support the unit from below as you extract it to prevent dropping. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damaged clips that may have fallen during removal.
- 8Inspect and prepare new control panelCompare the new HVAC control panel with the removed unit to ensure correct replacement. Transfer any necessary components such as mounting brackets or interface adapters if they are not included with the new panel. Inspect all connector pins on the new unit for damage or contamination.
- 9Install new HVAC control panelCarefully position the new HVAC control panel into the dashboard opening. Ensure all connector ports are accessible and the unit is properly aligned with the mounting holes. Do not force the panel into place; it should slide in smoothly if properly aligned.
- 10Reconnect all electrical connectorsReconnect the main power/CAN bus connector first, ensuring you hear or feel a positive click when the connector locks into place. Then reconnect the backlighting connector and any temperature sensor cables. Verify each connector is fully seated by gently tugging on the wire harness.
- 11Secure HVAC control panel mounting screwsInstall the four T25 Torx mounting screws to secure the HVAC control panel to the dashboard structure. Start all screws by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to distribute pressure evenly. Snug screws firmly but do not overtighten as the mounting bosses are plastic.
- 12Reinstall trim panels and console componentsReinstall the upper dashboard trim panel by aligning the clips and pressing firmly until all clips snap into place. Reinstall the center console side panels followed by the lower console trim. Verify all panels are flush and properly seated with no gaps.
- 13Reconnect 12V batteryReturn to the rear equipment bay and reconnect the negative terminal to the 12V auxiliary battery. Ensure the connection is tight and secure.
Reassembly
- All trim panels must be fully seated with clips engaged to prevent rattles
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the console area before final closure
- Check that all trim panel gaps are even and consistent with factory appearance
Verification
- Turn the ignition to ON position and verify the HVAC control panel display illuminates properly
- Test all HVAC control functions including temperature adjustment, fan speed, mode selection, and defrost
- Verify that climate control settings are retained when cycling the ignition
- Check that automatic climate control responds appropriately to temperature changes
- Confirm no warning lights or HVAC system errors appear on the main instrument cluster
- Test both driver and passenger zone controls if equipped with dual-zone climate control
- Verify backlighting of the control panel functions properly with vehicle lighting controls
