This procedure relearns the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors on a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 after tire rotation, sensor replacement, or wheel swap to ensure proper tire pressure monitoring.
Warnings
⚠The Rivian EDV 500 uses a direct TPMS system with integrated sensors in each wheel. Do not exceed maximum tire pressure during relearn procedure.
ℹ️Vehicle must be stationary with parking brake engaged during the entire relearn procedure.
⚠The 12V battery must be fully charged before beginning TPMS relearn. Low voltage can cause relearn failures.

Parts
- TPMS sensor valve core (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure vehicle is in Park mode and powered off
- Verify all four tires are mounted correctly and inflated to door placard specifications (typically 42-45 PSI front/rear for EDV 500)
- Confirm 12V battery is fully charged (above 12.4V)
- Close all doors, hood, and liftgate
- Verify no TPMS sensor fault codes are present before beginning relearn
Procedure
- 1Verify tire pressuresUsing a calibrated tire pressure gauge, check and adjust all four tire pressures to match the specifications on the driver's door jamb placard. Ensure all tires are cold (vehicle has not been driven for at least 3 hours). Record the pressure of each tire for reference.
- 2Power on vehicle systemsEnter the vehicle and close all doors. Press the brake pedal and power on the vehicle to accessory mode (do not put into Drive). Ensure the instrument cluster illuminates and displays tire pressure information, even if showing dashes or fault indicators.
- 3Access TPMS relearn mode via touchscreenOn the center touchscreen, navigate to Vehicle Settings > Service > Tire Pressure Monitoring > TPMS Relearn. If this option is not available in the standard user interface, you will need to use the OBD-II method in step 4. If available, select 'Start Relearn Process' and follow on-screen prompts.
- 4Connect OBD-II relearn tool (if required)If the touchscreen method is unavailable, connect a Rivian-compatible TPMS relearn tool to the OBD-II port located below the driver's side dashboard. Power on the tool and select the vehicle year, make, model (2023 Rivian EDV 500). Choose 'TPMS Relearn' or 'Sensor Programming' from the tool menu.ℹ️Some generic TPMS tools may not support Rivian vehicles. Verify tool compatibility before purchase or use Rivian-approved service software.
- 5Initiate relearn sequenceFollow the prompts on the TPMS tool or touchscreen to begin the relearn sequence. The system will typically prompt you to confirm tire positions. The standard order is: Driver Front (LF), Passenger Front (RF), Passenger Rear (RR), Driver Rear (LR). Confirm the sequence when prompted.
- 6Activate driver front sensorStarting with the driver front tire, position the TPMS activation tool against the tire sidewall near the valve stem. If using manual activation method, the tool will prompt the sensor to transmit. Hold the tool in place for 5-10 seconds until you hear a horn chirp or see a confirmation on the tool/screen. Some Rivian vehicles may auto-detect sensors without a separate activation tool if using OBD method.
- 7Activate passenger front sensorMove to the passenger front tire and repeat the sensor activation process. Position the tool near the valve stem, activate, and wait for confirmation chirp or display message. Ensure each sensor responds before moving to the next wheel.
- 8Activate passenger rear sensorProceed to the passenger rear tire and activate the TPMS sensor using the same method. Wait for system confirmation before continuing to the final wheel.
- 9Activate driver rear sensorComplete the relearn sequence by activating the driver rear TPMS sensor. After this final sensor is registered, the system should provide a completion message or horn chirp pattern indicating successful relearn.
- 10Complete relearn and power cycleDisconnect the OBD-II tool if used. Power off the vehicle completely by pressing the power button. Wait 30 seconds, then power the vehicle back on to accessory or ready mode. The instrument cluster should now display individual tire pressures for all four wheels without fault indicators.
- 11Clear TPMS fault codesIf any TPMS warning lights remain illuminated after successful relearn, use the OBD-II scanner to check for stored fault codes. Clear any existing TPMS-related codes and verify the warning light extinguishes. If codes return immediately, verify sensor battery condition and proper installation.
- 12Perform test drive verificationDrive the vehicle at speeds above 25 mph for at least 10 minutes to allow the TPMS system to fully initialize and confirm all sensors are communicating properly. Monitor the instrument cluster to ensure tire pressures update and no warning lights illuminate during the drive.
Reassembly
- No disassembly required for this procedure
- Ensure all tire valve caps are reinstalled after pressure verification
Verification
- Confirm all four tire pressures display correctly on the instrument cluster
- Verify no TPMS warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard
- Check that tire pressure values update in real-time (may take several minutes of driving)
- Use OBD-II scanner to verify no TPMS fault codes are present in vehicle systems
- Test low pressure warning by reducing one tire pressure by 5-7 PSI and confirming the system alerts within 2 minutes of driving
