Parts
- Front window regulator assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Door panel retaining clips × 1 — Replace any damaged clips
- Water barrier membrane (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Open the affected door fully and secure in place
- Roll window to approximately mid-position for easier access (if operable)
- Prepare clean workspace to place door panel and components
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel fastenersRemove all visible Torx screws from the door panel perimeter, typically located in the pull handle area, armrest, and lower door panel edge. On the EDV 500, check for screws behind small trim covers that may need to be pried off first. Remove any visible bolts securing the door handle bezel using a 10mm socket.
- 2Disconnect door panel switches and controlsCarefully release the window switch module from the armrest by pressing release tabs. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight out. Disconnect any additional connectors for door locks or mirror controls as equipped on the EDV 500.
- 3Remove door panelUsing trim removal tools, carefully release the retaining clips around the door panel perimeter, starting from the bottom rear corner and working around. Lift the door panel upward to disengage it from the window sill retention channel, then pull away from the door frame. Set panel aside in a safe location.
- 4Remove water barrier membraneCarefully peel back the water barrier membrane to access the window regulator mechanism. The EDV 500 uses an adhesive-backed membrane. Peel slowly to avoid tearing, as it may be reusable if not damaged. Fold it out of the way and secure with tape if reusing.
- 5Secure window glassUsing painter's tape, tape the window glass to the door frame in the UP position to prevent it from falling when the regulator is disconnected. Alternatively, have an assistant hold the glass, or use temporary support blocks wedged between the glass and door bottom.⚠Ensure glass is securely supported before proceeding. Unsupported glass will fall into the door cavity
- 6Disconnect window regulator motorLocate the window regulator motor electrical connector and disconnect it by pressing the locking tab. On the Rivian EDV 500, this connector is typically located near the bottom of the door cavity.
- 7Disconnect glass from regulatorLocate the bolts or clips securing the window glass to the regulator lift mechanism (typically 2 bolts accessed through access holes in the door frame). Remove these fasteners using a 10mm socket or appropriate Torx driver. Once disconnected, ensure the glass remains secured in the UP position.
- 8Remove regulator mounting fastenersRemove all regulator assembly mounting bolts from the door frame. The EDV 500 typically has 4-6 mounting bolts securing the regulator track and motor assembly. Note the location and size of each bolt as they may vary. Use a 10mm socket and Torx drivers as needed.
- 9Remove window regulator assemblyCarefully maneuver the regulator assembly out through the largest access opening in the door frame. The regulator may need to be tilted or partially collapsed to fit through. Control the assembly to prevent spring tension from causing sudden movement. Remove completely from door cavity.⚠Regulator contains tensioned springs. Maintain control during removal
- 10Install new window regulator assemblyPosition the new regulator assembly and maneuver it into the door cavity through the access opening. Align the regulator mounting holes with the door frame mounting points. Install all regulator mounting bolts hand-tight first, then tighten securely in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating of the assembly.
- 11Connect glass to regulatorCarefully lower the window glass onto the regulator lift mechanism mounting points. Align the glass mounting holes with the regulator brackets. Install the glass-to-regulator fasteners and tighten securely. Ensure the glass sits properly in the regulator channels.
- 12Reconnect electrical and test operationReconnect the window regulator motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Test window operation through several full up and down cycles to verify smooth operation and proper alignment. Disconnect battery again before final reassembly.
Reassembly
- Reapply or replace the water barrier membrane, ensuring complete adhesion around all edges to maintain weather seal
- Position door panel and engage the top edge into the window sill retention channel
- Press firmly around panel perimeter to seat all retaining clips, ensuring each clip is fully engaged
- Reconnect all electrical connectors for switches, locks, and controls
- Reinstall all door panel fasteners and trim covers
- Reconnect 12V battery negative terminal
Verification
- Test window operation through multiple full cycles, verifying smooth motion with no binding or unusual noise
- Verify window auto-up and auto-down functions work correctly (if equipped)
- Check window alignment with door frame and proper sealing at full UP position
- Verify all door panel switches and controls function properly
- Perform window relearn/initialization procedure if required by the Rivian system (cycle window fully down and up while holding switch in each direction for 2 seconds past travel limit)
- Check for any rattles or loose components in door panel
