Sunroof Motor

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the panoramic sunroof motor assembly on a 2024 Rivian EDV 500 delivery van.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake
2. Turn off the vehicle completely using the power button
3. Disconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes for system capacitor discharge
4. Verify the sunroof is in the fully closed position; if inoperative, manually close using emergency procedure in owner's manual
5. Cover the front seats and cargo area with protective cloths to prevent damage from falling debris
6. Ensure adequate overhead lighting for working inside the headliner cavity

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove overhead console assembly
   Using trim panel tools, carefully pry down the overhead console housing starting from the rear edge. Disconnect the dome light electrical connector and any other electrical connections. Remove the console completely and set aside on a protected surface.

   Remove front headliner trim panels
   Locate and remove the headliner trim panels surrounding the sunroof opening. Use trim removal tools to release the retaining clips. Work carefully to avoid breaking clips. Remove T25 Torx screws if present at panel edges.

   Access sunroof motor compartment
   Locate the sunroof motor assembly housing at the front center of the sunroof mechanism, typically positioned between the windshield header and sunroof frame. Remove any protective covers or acoustic insulation to expose the motor mounting area.

   Disconnect sunroof motor electrical connector
   Locate the wiring harness connector on the sunroof motor assembly. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the motor. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.

   Disconnect sunroof motor from drive mechanism
   Identify the drive cable connection point on the motor output shaft. Remove the T30 Torx bolts securing the motor to the sunroof drive mechanism housing. Carefully note the position and orientation of any alignment marks or indexing features.

   Remove sunroof motor mounting fasteners
   Remove the T25 or T30 Torx bolts securing the motor assembly to the sunroof frame bracket. There are typically 3-4 mounting bolts. Support the motor with one hand while removing the final fastener.

   Extract sunroof motor assembly
   Carefully maneuver the motor assembly out of the mounting position, being mindful of surrounding wiring and trim. The motor may need to be rotated or angled to clear the sunroof frame rails. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage.

   Install new sunroof motor
   Position the new motor assembly into the mounting bracket, ensuring proper orientation matches the original installation. Align any indexing features or mounting holes. Thread in the mounting bolts finger-tight initially to ensure proper fitment.

   Secure motor to mounting bracket
   Tighten the motor mounting bolts in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating. While no specific torque values are provided, tighten securely but do not over-torque the fasteners into the composite or aluminum mounting structure.

    Connect motor to drive mechanism
    Align the motor output shaft with the sunroof drive mechanism coupling. Ensure any alignment marks are properly indexed. Install and tighten the drive mechanism mounting bolts securely.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Connect the wiring harness to the sunroof motor, ensuring the connector clicks fully into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.

    Perform initial function test
    Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery. Power on the vehicle and attempt to operate the sunroof using the control switch. The sunroof may move erratically or not at all until calibration is performed.

    Calibrate sunroof motor using diagnostic tool
    Connect the Rivian diagnostic tool to the vehicle's OBD-II port. Navigate to the sunroof system calibration procedure. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the motor learn procedure, which will establish the full open and closed positions.

    Reinstall headliner trim panels
    Replace all headliner trim panels in reverse order of removal. Ensure all retaining clips are properly seated and any Torx screws are reinstalled. Replace any broken clips with new parts.

    Reinstall overhead console
    Reconnect all electrical connections to the overhead console assembly. Carefully snap the console back into position, ensuring all mounting points are properly engaged and the unit sits flush with the headliner.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim panels are securely fastened and properly aligned with no gaps
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and latched
3. Check that no tools or parts were left in the headliner cavity
4. Confirm the overhead console functions properly including all lighting and controls

Verification

• Test sunroof operation through full open and close cycles at least three times
• Verify sunroof stops properly at the fully closed and fully vented positions
• Check for abnormal noise, binding, or hesitation during operation
• Confirm the sunroof auto-close and anti-pinch safety features function correctly
• Verify no error codes are present in the vehicle system using diagnostic tool
• Inspect the sunroof seal alignment and verify no light gaps when fully closed
• Test the one-touch open and close functions if equipped
