This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof switch assembly in the overhead console of a 2024 Rivian EDV 500 delivery van.
Warnings
⚠The 12V electrical system must be fully powered down for 2 minutes before beginning work to allow capacitors to discharge.
⚠Excessive force on trim panels can cause permanent damage to mounting tabs. Use proper trim removal tools.
ℹ️The sunroof switch is integrated with the vehicle's CAN bus network. After replacement, the system may require initialization through the vehicle settings menu.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure sunroof is fully closed before beginning work
- Access the 12V battery disconnect through the front lower access panel
- Disconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes
- Open both front doors to provide access to overhead console
- Adjust driver and passenger seats to their lowest position for better overhead access
Procedure
- 1Remove overhead console front trim coverUsing a plastic trim removal tool, carefully insert it into the gap at the front edge of the overhead console near the windshield. Gently pry downward to release the two front retaining clips. Work slowly from front to rear to avoid breaking clips.⚠The trim cover is held by spring clips that can break if excessive force is applied. Apply steady, even pressure only.
- 2Release rear overhead console clipsContinue releasing the overhead console trim by inserting the trim tool into the side gaps approximately 2 inches from the rear edge on both driver and passenger sides. Pull downward gently until both rear clips release. The trim panel should now be loose but still connected by wiring.
- 3Disconnect overhead console lighting harnessLower the front section of the overhead console trim carefully. Locate the white connector for the map lights/dome lights on the passenger side. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector. Support the trim panel to prevent strain on any remaining connections.
- 4Access sunroof switch mounting screwsWith the trim panel removed, locate the sunroof switch assembly in the center of the overhead console housing. Identify the two T20 Torx screws securing the switch assembly to the console frame, one on each side of the switch module.
- 5Remove sunroof switch mounting screwsUsing the T20 Torx driver, remove both mounting screws completely. Set screws aside in a secure location. The switch assembly should now be loose but still connected by the electrical harness.
- 6Disconnect sunroof switch harnessCarefully pull the sunroof switch assembly downward approximately 2 inches to access the rear connector. Locate the gray connector on the back of the switch assembly. Press the red locking tab toward the connector body while pulling the connector away from the switch. The switch is now free for removal.ℹ️The connector uses a secondary lock that must be released before the primary connector will separate.
- 7Inspect connector and harnessExamine the connector terminals on both the switch and vehicle harness for corrosion, damage, or pushed-back pins. Check the harness wiring for any signs of chafing or damage. Clean connector terminals with electrical contact cleaner if any contamination is present.
- 8Install new sunroof switch assemblyPosition the new sunroof switch assembly near its mounting location. Connect the gray electrical connector to the back of the new switch, ensuring it clicks firmly into place and the red secondary lock engages fully. Tug gently on the connector to verify proper connection.
- 9Secure sunroof switch to consoleAlign the switch assembly with the mounting holes in the overhead console frame. Insert both T20 Torx mounting screws and tighten them evenly. Tighten screws snug but do not overtighten as the console frame is plastic-backed and can crack.⚠Over-torquing can crack the mounting bosses. Tighten only until snug, approximately 15-20 inch-pounds by feel.
- 10Reconnect overhead console lightingPosition the overhead console trim panel near its installed location. Reconnect the white map light/dome light connector on the passenger side, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
- 11Reinstall overhead console trim coverAlign the rear edge of the overhead console trim with the mounting location. Press firmly at each clip location, starting with the rear clips, then the front clips near the windshield. Ensure all four clips are fully seated and the trim is flush with the headliner.
- 12Reconnect 12V battery and initialize systemReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal. Enter the vehicle and power on the electrical system using the brake pedal and power button. Access the vehicle settings menu on the center display and navigate to the sunroof calibration function if prompted. Follow on-screen instructions to initialize the new switch.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are properly seated with no gaps or misalignment
- Confirm overhead console lighting operates correctly
- Check that no tools or parts were left in the overhead console area
Verification
- Test sunroof open function - sunroof should tilt and slide smoothly through full range of motion
- Test sunroof close function - verify full closure with no gaps
- Test tilt function independently - sunroof should tilt up and down without sliding
- Verify sunroof one-touch auto open and auto close functions operate correctly
- Confirm sunroof express open/close stops when switch is pressed during operation
- Check that sunroof switch LED illumination works with vehicle lights on
- Verify no warning messages appear on the instrument cluster related to sunroof system
