Symptoms: Grinding, whining, or humming noise from front or rear axle during acceleration or coasting, Vibration felt through floorboards at highway speed, Drive unit fault codes; reduced power or limp mode, Metallic debris in drive unit fluid during service

Fix: Drive unit R&R required; Rivian has issued TSBs and warranty extensions for early units. Independent shops struggle with calibration/pairing software. Expect 8-12 hours labor for R&R, plus dealer programming. Post-warranty, you're buying a remanufactured unit from Rivian — no aftermarket yet.

Symptoms: Battery thermal management fault warnings on dash, Reduced charging speed or range loss, Coolant puddles under vehicle (green or orange fluid), Battery pack temperature rising abnormally during DC fast charging

Fix: Coolant manifold or hose connections inside the pack can seep or crack. Battery pack must be partially dropped to access (10-14 hours labor). Rivian service centers have priority on parts; indie shops may wait weeks. If you catch it early, hose/fitting replacement avoids full pack R&R.

Symptoms: Powertrain fault message; vehicle refuses to drive or enter gear, Coolant smell in cabin or visible leak near front subframe, Reduced power output during heavy acceleration or towing, Inverter temperature warnings after sustained high-speed driving

Fix: Inverter coolant hoses and quick-disconnect fittings can leak. Inverter R&R runs 6-8 hours; coolant service and refill adds another 1-2. Rivian's proprietary coolant and bleeding procedure required. Some TSBs address early production batch issues, but post-warranty you're on your own.

Fix: NHTSA recalls cover seat belt anchors, suspension fasteners, and airbag hardware — all torque spec or assembly line mistakes. Dealers will inspect/retorque under recall, but if you're past the recall window or bought private-party without records, indie shops can replicate the TSB torque procedures (2-3 hours). Critical: left unchecked, loose fasteners cause catastrophic failure.

Symptoms: Vehicle won't wake from sleep; dead 12V battery after sitting 3-7 days, Infotainment system fails to boot or freezes on startup, Door handles don't present; gear tunnel won't open, Phantom battery drain with no obvious accessories left on

Fix: The 12V battery is maintained by a DC-DC converter from the HV pack. Software bugs and parasitic draws from always-on modules (LTE modem, cameras, HVAC controller) kill the 12V. OTA updates help but don't cure it. Replacing the 12V battery ($200 part, 1 hour labor) buys time, but root cause is often a module that won't sleep. Dealer diagnostics required for module isolation.

Fix: Early production evaporators can corrode at brazed joints (salt exposure accelerates). Dash removal required (12-16 hours labor). Rivian has covered some under goodwill, but post-warranty you're paying. Aftermarket evaporators don't exist yet, so you're buying OEM at Rivian pricing.
