The 2007 Saab 9-7X is a badge-engineered GMT360 (TrailBlazer/Envoy) with Saab interior touches. It shares the platform's robust bones but also inherits GM's mid-2000s transmission and AFM engine issues, plus some Saab-specific electrical quirks.
Active Fuel Management (AFM) Lifter and Piston Ring Failure (5.3L V8)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (quart every 500-1,000 miles), Ticking or tapping noise from engine, especially cold start, Misfires on cylinders 1, 4, 6, or 7 (AFM cylinders), P0300-series codes and possibly low compression readings
Fix: AFM system causes lifter collapse and accelerated ring wear. Full fix requires AFM delete kit or lifter replacement plus honing/re-ringing if caught early (15-20 hours). Severe cases need short block or complete engine rebuild (25-35 hours). Many shops now recommend pre-emptive AFM disable with tuning.
Estimated cost: $3,500-8,500
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Failure and 4L60E/4L70E Issues
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid leaking near radiator or frame rails, Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts, especially when cold, Slipping on acceleration or delayed engagement, Pink milky fluid if cooler fails internally (coolant contamination)
Fix: Cooler lines rust through at frame contact points. External leak is 2-3 hours for lines. Internal cooler failure contaminates trans fluid and requires full flush, sometimes rebuild if driven long (12-18 hours for R&R and rebuild). 4L60E/4L70E also suffers from 3-4 clutch pack wear and sun shell failures around 120k if not maintained.
Estimated cost: $400-3,800
Front Differential Fluid Leak and Axle Actuator Failure (AWD models)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Gear oil dripping from front differential or right-side axle tube, Service 4WD or Reduced Power message on dash, Grinding or clunking when turning in 4WD/AWD mode, Front wheels not engaging when AWD is active
Fix: Front diff uses a clutch pack and electronic actuator that seizes or leaks. Actuator replacement alone is 2-3 hours. Diff seal or bearing issues require diff disassembly (4-6 hours). Actuator motor is dealer-only part historically, often $400-600 just for the part.
Estimated cost: $600-1,800
HVAC Blower Motor Resistor and Blend Door Actuator Failure
Common · low severity
Symptoms: Blower only works on high speed setting, Clicking or grinding noise behind dash when adjusting temperature, Stuck on heat or AC regardless of control setting, Intermittent temperature swings or no airflow
Fix: Blower resistor is a 0.5-hour job behind glove box. Blend door actuators (usually driver-side temp actuator) require dash-top removal and 3-4 hours labor. GM used cheap plastic gears in actuators that strip. Resistor is $40-80; actuator $60-150 per part.
Estimated cost: $150-650
Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter Housing Corrosion
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: No-start or extended cranking, especially when hot, Loss of power or stuttering under load, Fuel smell around rear of vehicle, Check engine light with P0171/P0174 lean codes or low fuel pressure
Fix: In-tank pump strainer clogs or pump motor fails. Requires dropping fuel tank (2.5-3.5 hours). Fuel filter housing (frame-mounted canister) also rusts through in salt states, causing leaks and low pressure. Filter housing is 1.5-2 hours if accessible. Pump assembly runs $250-500.
Symptoms: Driver or passenger window drops but won't raise (anti-pinch recalibration needed), Headlights flicker or low-beam cuts out intermittently, Interior lights stay on or won't turn off after door close, Instrument cluster backlighting dims or sections go dark
Fix: Saab used different body control module logic and headlight modules vs. GM siblings. Window recalibration is a 10-minute procedure but often requires TECH2 scan tool. Headlight issues typically trace to corroded ground at frame rail or faulty HID ballast/module (if equipped). Module replacement 1-2 hours, grounds are 0.5 hour cleaning/treatment.
Estimated cost: $80-900
Owner tips
Disable AFM or switch to 0W-20 synthetic and monitor oil level religiously if keeping the 5.3L V8 — catch lifter tick early before it grenades the engine
Flush transmission fluid every 50k and inspect cooler lines annually in rust belt; frame contact points corrode fast
Replace fuel filter housing proactively if you see surface rust; it's cheaper than a roadside tow and tank drop
Keep a TECH2 or aftermarket GM scanner handy for window recalibration and AWD system diagnostics — these need GM-specific commands
Comfortable GMT360 with nicer Saab interior, but the 5.3L AFM is a ticking time bomb past 100k — budget for engine work or delete AFM preemptively; otherwise solid if maintained.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 SAAB 9-7x; 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL; and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Isuzu Ascender vehicles. Fluid may enter the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board. A short may cause the power door lock and power window switches to function intermittently or become inoperative. The short may also cause overheating, which could melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke, or a fire.
Consequence: A short in the circuit board could lead to a fire, increasing the risk of personal injury. A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the part number on the door module, and install a new door module if necessary, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. An interim letter was mailed to owners in August 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-955-9007 (SAAB), and 1-800-255-6727 (Isuzu). GM's number for this recall is 14309. NOTE: This recall provides a new remedy for all vehicles covered by recall 13V-248. Vehicles whose modules were modified but not replaced as part of the previous recall remedy must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign.
