The 2012 Tribeca with the 3.6L H6 is Subaru's luxury SUV outlier—solid AWD system and transmission, but plagued by catastrophic engine failures tied to piston ring land cracking and oil consumption that can grenade the motor if ignored.
Piston Ring Land Failure / Catastrophic Oil Consumption
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000-1,500 mi), Blue smoke on startup or acceleration, Low oil pressure warnings, eventual rod knock or spun bearing, Check engine light for misfire or catalyst efficiency codes
Fix: Ring land cracks on cylinder #4 are endemic to FB/EZ36 engines. Once consumption starts, rings are toast. Requires complete short block replacement—pull engine, install factory or aftermarket short block, reassemble. 18-24 labor hours depending on shop efficiency.
Estimated cost: $6,500-9,500
Head Gasket Weeping (External Oil Seepage)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Oil residue visible on block below cylinder heads, Burning oil smell after highway drives, Gradual oil loss without blue smoke, No coolant mixing—purely external weep
Fix: The 3.6L doesn't suffer the coolant-into-cylinder failure like older 2.5s, but external seepage is common. Heads must come off—requires pulling intake manifold, timing chains, cams. 14-18 labor hours. OEM MLS gaskets and ARP studs recommended.
Estimated cost: $3,200-4,800
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Corrosion / Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: ATF pooling under vehicle near radiator, Pink fluid drips visible on driveway, Low fluid level causing delayed shifts or shudder, Corrosion visible on steel lines running to radiator
Fix: Steel cooler lines rust through where they pass under the engine. Replace both feed and return lines, flush cooler, top off ATF. 2-3 labor hours. Subaru updated to coated lines—use those.
Estimated cost: $450-750
Transmission Mounts Collapsing
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk on throttle tip-in or reversal, Vibration at idle in Drive, Excessive driveline movement visible when rocking vehicle
Fix: Rear trans mount fatigues and allows excessive powertrain movement. Replace mount and inspect pitch stopper. 1.5-2 labor hours.
Estimated cost: $250-450
Takata Airbag Inflator Recall (Passenger Side)
Common · high severity
Symptoms: Recall notice received by mail, No functional symptoms until catastrophic failure in crash, Metal shrapnel risk on airbag deployment
Fix: NHTSA recall for defective passenger airbag inflator. Dealer replaces inflator at no cost. 1-2 hours labor, covered under recall. CHECK VIN for open recalls—this is a safety-critical item.
Estimated cost: $0 (recall)
Fuel Filter Clogging (On High-Mileage Units)
Rare · medium severity
Typical onset: 120,000+ mi
Symptoms: Hard starting when hot, Hesitation under load or at highway speeds, Fuel pump whine audible from rear seat area, P0171/P0174 lean codes if severely restricted
Fix: Filter is part of the in-tank fuel pump module. Drop tank, replace entire pump assembly. 3-4 labor hours. Subaru doesn't sell filter separately.
Estimated cost: $650-950
Owner tips
Check oil every 1,000 miles religiously—Tribecas with the 3.6L will consume oil even when healthy, and once it accelerates you're on borrowed time before engine failure
Verify Takata airbag recall completion before purchase—open recall is a deal-breaker for safety and resale
Budget $1,000/year for deferred maintenance if buying over 100k miles—these were $40k SUVs with luxury-car upkeep costs
Avoid any unit with a history of low oil warnings or consumption complaints—engine damage is likely already done
Only if you find one with obsessive oil-change records and confirmed recall completion under 80k miles—otherwise the engine grenade risk outweighs the capable AWD and comfort.

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Tribeca vehicles manufactured November 16, 2004, to January 27, 2014. Due to a possible malfunction of the hood safety system and hood lock system, the hood may open unexpectedly while driving.
Consequence: If the hood unexpectedly opens while driving, it may interfere with the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will complete this recall in two phases. Phase one will involve inspection, cleaning, and
lubricating the hood safety and hood lock systems. If after this is performed the hood latch does not operate properly, it will be replaced with a new current style part. Phase two will involve installing an improved hood safety system and hood lock system. Interim notification was mailed March 4, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WQX-59 (phase one) and WQY-60 (phase two).

2012-12-26
Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback vehicles, certain model year 2006 through 2012 Tribeca vehicles sold before January 2012, and certain model year 2009 through 2012 Forester vehicles sold before January 2012. Up to 78,650 of these vehicles may have been equipped with accessory puddle lights that, when illuminated, brighten the area under the doors of the vehicle. A short circuit can develop when either the puddle light or connector are exposed to an electrolytic moisture source (such as road spray that has road salt in it) and it penetrates the circuit board of the puddle light or the pins of the puddle light connector(s).
Consequence: Over time, migration of the moisture into the circuit board and/or into the connector cavity, may result in a short circuit of the puddle light system. This may generate heat which may melt the plastic resulting in smoke or fire.
Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional fused-harness, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.
