Replace a ride-height sensor on the air suspension of a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck. The sensor links the lower control arm to the chassis and feeds the air suspension controller — incorrect installation causes ride-height errors and can put the truck in reduced-function mode.

Warnings

⚠️This Cybertruck uses a 48V low-voltage architecture, NOT 12V. Standard 12V tools, jumper packs, and chargers can damage the LV system. Disconnect the 48V LV battery using the manufacturer-specified procedure.

Air suspension can move suddenly when the vehicle wakes or the system is repressurized. Place the truck in Service Mode / Jack Mode BEFORE disconnecting the LV battery to disable automatic ride-height adjustment.
Steer-by-wire: there is no mechanical column. Do NOT rotate the road wheels by hand against lock with the system powered, as this can log faults in the steering ECU.
Stainless exoskeleton panels mar easily from tool slips and steel-on-steel contact. Protect fender edges with fender covers; never strike panels.
ℹ️After replacement, the air suspension MUST be recalibrated so the controller learns the new sensor's neutral position. Without calibration the truck may sit at the wrong height or refuse to leave a default level.

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 48V low-voltage battery per the Cybertruck-specific procedure (note: this is 48V, not 12V — see architecture notes).
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Before disconnecting the LV battery: enter Service Mode via the touchscreen and select the air suspension / Jack Mode option to disable automatic height adjustment and vent residual air-spring pressure changes.
  7. Identify which corner's height sensor is being replaced (front-left, front-right, rear-left, rear-right). Sensor part numbers and linkage geometry differ by corner.
  8. Loosen the lug nuts on the affected corner while the wheel is still on the ground.
  9. Raise the vehicle at the manufacturer-specified jack point and support with rated jack stands. Remove the wheel.
  10. Have the replacement sensor and any new fasteners on hand before disassembly.

Procedure

    Locate the height sensor
    With the wheel removed, locate the ride-height sensor at the affected corner. It is a small rotary sensor mounted to the chassis/subframe via a bracket, with a rigid linkage arm connecting its lever to a ball stud on the lower control arm. Inspect the existing routing and orientation and photograph it for reference before removal.

    Disconnect the sensor electrical connector
    Trace the sensor harness back to its inline connector. Release the connector lock (typically a slide-lock or pinch-tab) using a trim tool — do not pry on the wiring. Inspect the pins for corrosion or water intrusion and report any findings.
    Cybertruck LV connectors may differ from S/3/X/Y due to the 48V architecture. Do not force-fit a connector that doesn't release cleanly.

    Detach the linkage from the control arm ball stud
    Disconnect the lower end of the sensor linkage from the ball stud on the lower control arm. Most designs use a snap-fit socket — pry gently and evenly with a trim tool to release without bending the linkage rod. If the linkage uses a nut on a threaded stud, hold the stud and remove the nut.
    Do not bend or distort the linkage rod. Its length sets the sensor's calibration zero — a bent rod will cause persistent height errors even after recalibration.

    Remove the sensor mounting bolts
    Remove the bolts/nuts securing the sensor body (or its bracket) to the chassis. Note bolt length and orientation if multiple are used. Support the sensor as the last fastener is removed.

    Withdraw the sensor with its linkage as an assembly. Compare the old unit to the new one side-by-side: confirm matching connector, lever orientation, mounting pattern, and linkage length. If the new sensor ships with the linkage detached, transfer or set the linkage to match the old unit's length exactly.
    ℹ️If linkage length is adjustable on the new part, measure the old assembly center-to-center between ball-stud sockets and replicate it before installation.

    Install the new sensor to the chassis
    Position the new sensor against its mounting bracket in the original orientation. Start the mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to specification.

    Reattach the linkage to the control arm
    Snap or thread the linkage end onto the control arm ball stud. Confirm it is fully seated — a partial seat will pop off under suspension travel and damage the sensor. If a retaining nut is used, torque to the OEM specification (refer to Tesla Service Manual — value not in verified data).

    Reconnect the electrical connector
    Mate the harness connector to the new sensor and engage the lock fully. Verify the harness is routed away from moving suspension components, the brake hose, and any heat sources, matching the original routing.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the wheel. Snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  2. Lower the vehicle so the full weight rests on the wheels.
  3. Final-torque the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
  4. Reconnect the 48V low-voltage battery per the Cybertruck-specific procedure.
  5. Wake the vehicle and allow the air suspension system to initialize. Listen for the compressor cycling — this is normal as the system re-pressurizes.

Verification

  • Enter Service Mode and run the air suspension ride-height calibration / sensor learn routine. This is mandatory after sensor replacement — without it the controller will use the old sensor's stored zero.
  • After calibration, command each ride-height preset (Low / Standard / High / Extract, as applicable to Cybertruck) and confirm the truck reaches each height without faults and within reasonable time.
  • Measure ride height at all four corners with a tape measure from a consistent reference point (wheel-arch lip to ground) on a level surface. The serviced corner should match its mate within manufacturer tolerance.
  • Check the touchscreen for any active or stored alerts related to air suspension or ride-height sensors. Clear and re-test by power-cycling the vehicle.
  • Road test: accelerate, brake, and turn at low speed, then check again for any 'Air suspension fault' or 'Vehicle leveling' alerts.
