Replacement of the interior door handle (cable-pull style) on a 2024 Model 3 Performance. The interior handle is integrated with the door card and connects via a short Bowden cable to the latch — access requires removing the door trim panel.
Warnings
⚠️Even though this is a non-HV job, the Model 3 floor pack is live. Never probe, pierce, or route tools near orange HV cabling under the vehicle.
⚠Disconnecting the 12V battery may trigger window calibration loss. Window auto-up/down will need to be re-initialized after reassembly.
⚠The Model 3 door card is held by spring clips that are easily broken. Pull straight outward from the door skin — do not pry against the painted door edge (aluminum/steel hybrid body damages easily).
ℹ️Disable Sentry Mode and Walk-Away Lock in the touchscreen before opening doors with the 12V disconnected to avoid alarm triggers when reconnecting.
⚠The interior handle on Model 3 is a mechanical cable release that bypasses the electronic latch. After install, verify it actually opens the door BEFORE closing the door fully — otherwise you can be locked out of a closed door if the cable is misrouted.
Tools required

Parts
- Interior door handle assembly (Model 3 specific, correct LH/RH side) × 1 — Tesla Model 3 interior handle — order by VIN and side
- Door panel trim clips (replacement set) × 6 — Manufacturer-specified door trim retainer clips
- Handle mounting screws (if not reused) × 2 — OEM-spec replacement fasteners
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place the vehicle in Park, and engage the parking brake.
- Exit all doors with the key fob/phone key away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On 2024 Model 3, the 12V (Li-ion on most builds) is located behind the right rear seat back panel or under the rear floor depending on build — refer to architecture notes and the in-vehicle service mode if available.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- In the touchscreen (before disconnecting 12V), disable Sentry Mode, Walk-Away Door Lock, and place the vehicle in Service Mode if you have access. Lower the affected door's window approximately halfway to clear the window seal during panel removal.
- Confirm correct LH/RH replacement handle by VIN and side before starting.
- Lay a soft pad on the floor beside the door to set the trim panel face-down without scratching.
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel cosmetic trimUsing a plastic pry tool, gently release the trim insert running along the top of the armrest/door pull area. Work from the rear edge forward. The trim is held by clips only — no fasteners. Set aside without flexing.⚠Trim clips are single-use rated — replace any that crack or stretch.
- 2Remove hidden door panel fastenersWith the cosmetic trim removed, locate the screws beneath it securing the door panel to the door shell. Remove using the appropriate Torx bit. Also check inside the door pull cup for an additional fastener under a small cap.Torque specPanel Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 3Release door panel clipsStarting at the bottom rear corner, insert a wide plastic pry tool between the door panel and the door shell. Pull straight outward (perpendicular to the door skin) to pop each spring clip in sequence around the bottom and front edge. Then lift the panel upward to disengage the window-belt hooks at the top.⚠Do not pry against the painted aluminum door edge — it dents and creases easily.
- 4Disconnect door panel electrical and tetherTilt the panel outward enough to access the back side. Disconnect the main wiring harness connector(s) for the speaker, switch pack, courtesy lights, and tweeter as applicable, depressing each locking tab. Release any panel safety tether/strap if present. Set the panel face-down on the prepared pad.
- 5Locate interior handle assemblyOn the back side of the door panel (or on the door shell behind the panel — confirm by visual inspection on this build), identify the mechanical interior release handle and its Bowden cable running toward the latch.
- 6Disconnect the release cable from the handleRotate the cable end fitting out of its retaining slot on the handle lever, then slide the cable housing out of its anchor bracket. Note the routing path and any cable clips along the way for reinstallation.⚠Do not kink, stretch, or over-bend the Bowden cable — a damaged cable can fail to release the latch and trap an occupant.Torque specCable Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 7Remove the interior handle assemblyRemove the handle mounting screws securing the handle assembly to the door panel (or door shell, depending on the build's handle mounting). Lift the handle assembly free.Torque specHandle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 8Transfer or compare componentsCompare the new handle to the original. Confirm matching cable anchor geometry, lever travel, and any integrated trim. Transfer over any reusable hardware as required by the replacement part's instructions.
- 9Install the new interior handlePosition the new handle in its mounting location and install the handle screws. Tighten to the verified specification.Torque specHandle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect the release cableRoute the Bowden cable along its original path. Seat the cable housing into its anchor first, then rotate the cable end fitting into the lever slot until it clicks/seats fully. Reinstall any cable retaining clips along the routing path and torque per spec.⚠Verify the cable end is fully captured in the lever — a partially seated end can pop loose during use and disable interior release.Torque specCable Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 11Functional pre-test BEFORE reinstalling panelWith the door still open and the panel disconnected, manually pull the new interior handle. Confirm the door latch releases smoothly with normal effort. Cycle 3–5 times. If the latch does not release, do NOT close the door — recheck cable routing and seating.⚠️Closing a door with a misrouted interior cable on a Model 3 can leave you unable to open it from inside (the electronic button may also fail with 12V disconnected). Always pre-test before closing.
Reassembly
- Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors until each locks audibly.
- Reattach the panel safety tether if equipped.
- Hook the door panel onto the window belt at the top first, then align all spring clips with their door-shell holes and press firmly inward at each clip location until fully seated.
- Reinstall the hidden panel fasteners and torque to the panel bolt specification.
- Reinstall the cosmetic trim insert, replacing any clips that were damaged during removal.
- Reconnect the 12V battery (negative terminal last). Torque the terminal to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
- Close all doors and allow the vehicle to wake. Re-enable Sentry Mode / Walk-Away Lock as desired in the touchscreen.
- Re-initialize the affected window: with the door closed, hold the window switch fully UP for 3 seconds after it stops, then fully DOWN for 3 seconds after it stops, to restore one-touch and anti-pinch calibration.
Verification
- Operate the interior handle 5–10 times with the door open — latch should release on the first detent of pull travel with no binding.
- Operate the exterior electronic release and confirm normal latch operation (the interior cable should not interfere with the electronic latch).
- Close the door normally and verify it latches fully (no ajar warning on the touchscreen).
- From inside, verify both the electronic interior release button AND the mechanical pull handle each open the door independently.
- Inspect the door panel for even gaps along the window belt and bottom edge — uneven seating indicates a missed clip.
- Verify window auto-up/auto-down and anti-pinch are functioning after re-initialization.
- Check the touchscreen for any door, lock, or body control warnings/alerts.
- While the door card is a routine maintenance opportunity: if the cabin air filters are due (every 2 years on Model 3), and the brake fluid is due (every 2 years per Tesla's published recommendation), consider scheduling those services as well — they are not 'lifetime' items despite Tesla's marketing.
