Remove the front door panel (door card) on a 2024 Model 3 Performance to access the speaker, window regulator, latch, or interior handle assembly. The 2024 refresh ('Highland') Model 3 uses fully concealed fasteners and a one-piece pull-up release strategy that is easy to crack if rushed.

Warnings

The 2024 Highland Model 3 deletes the stalks and relocates several controls; the door panel carries the power-window switches, mirror controls, and the electronic door release button. Damaging the switch pack ribbon or the capacitive release wiring is an expensive mistake.
The interior door release on Highland is electronic. With the 12V disconnected the manual mechanical release (the small pull built into the panel front) is the ONLY way to open the door from inside. Plan how you will exit the cabin before disconnecting 12V.
Door panel retaining clips are fragile plastic Christmas-tree style. Pulling at the wrong angle will snap the clip and crack the door card around the speaker grille — release them straight outward, not at an angle.
ℹ️Aluminum-skinned door — do not pry against the painted door shell with a metal tool. Use plastic trim tools only and tape the door edge.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tool set (wide flat + forked)Essential
T20 Torx driverEssential
T25 Torx driver
Small flat-blade pick for connector locksEssential
Torque screwdriver (0.5–5 Nm range)Essential
Painter's tape (to protect paint at door edge)
Microfiber blanket or padded surface for the removed panel

Parts

  • Replacement door panel trim clips (push-pin style) × 8 — OEM-equivalent door card retainer clips — replace any that distort on removal
  • Foam/butyl vapor barrier sealant (if vapor barrier is disturbed) × 1 — Butyl rope sealant, automotive grade

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, and confirm the electronic parking brake is engaged.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob/phone-key carried away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for low-voltage and HV systems to fully de-energize, even though this is a non-HV job.
  3. Open the door you will be working on and leave it open before disconnecting 12V — on Highland Model 3 the interior release is electronic and will not function with 12V disconnected (a mechanical backup release exists in the front of the armrest, but verify you can find it before powering down).
  4. Disconnect the low-voltage battery: on 2024 Model 3 the 12V/16V Li-ion battery is accessed under the right-rear floor area or behind the rear seat trim per the architecture notes for this VIN — disconnect the negative terminal and isolate it.
  5. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable. If you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized, STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Lower the window fully before disconnecting 12V — this gives clearance for the panel to lift off the belt-line weatherstrip without binding on the glass.
  7. Apply painter's tape along the inner door shell edge and around the A-pillar/B-pillar door trim seams to protect paint from trim tools.
  8. Lay out a padded surface nearby to receive the removed panel face-down so the switch pack and armrest are not stressed.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Diagnose before disassembly
Confirm the door panel actually needs to come off. Common reasons on 2024 Model 3: speaker buzz/failure (panel-mounted mid), power window switch failure, interior release button non-response, window regulator service, or rattles from the impact foam. If the electronic release is dead but the window switches work, the issue is usually the release switch ribbon at the panel — you do not need to pull the regulator. If the window itself is dead, verify it is not a one-touch reinitialization issue (hold up at full close for 3 seconds) before disassembly.
  2. 2
Release the upper trim cap behind the interior release
At the front-upper area of the door panel, just inboard of the side mirror triangle, there is a small decorative trim cap covering a single fastener on Highland Model 3. Using a wide plastic trim tool, gently lift the rear edge of this cap straight up and out. It is retained by two small clips — work slowly to avoid breaking them.
  3. 3
Remove the exposed Torx fastener under the trim cap
With the cap removed, back out the single Torx screw (T20) that secures the upper-front corner of the door card to the inner door shell. Set this screw aside — it threads into a metal insert and must be reinstalled to spec.

  4. 4
    Release the armrest grab-handle screws
Inside the armrest pull-cup (the molded grip used to close the door) there are two recessed Torx screws at the bottom of the cup, often hidden under a soft rubber mat. Lift the rubber mat out with a pick, then remove both screws. These are the primary load-bearing fasteners for the armrest section.

  5. 5
Release the perimeter clips — bottom edge first
Starting at the lower-front corner of the door panel, insert a wide forked plastic trim tool between the panel and the door shell and pop each push-pin clip straight outward. Work along the bottom edge first, then up the rear (B-pillar) edge, then up the front (A-pillar) edge. There are typically 8 perimeter clips. Pull straight out — angled pulls will snap clips. Inspect each clip as it releases; replace any that are distorted, white-stressed, or missing the retaining flange.
Do not pry against the painted door shell. The trim tool fork should sit against the clip body, not the sheet metal.

  6. 6
Lift the panel up and off the belt-line
With all perimeter clips released and the window fully down, lift the door panel straight UP about 25–30 mm to disengage the belt-line hooks at the top edge of the panel from the inner glass weatherstrip. Then tilt the bottom of the panel outward slightly so the panel hangs from its harnesses. Do NOT pull it free yet — wiring is still attached.
  7. 7
    Disconnect the switch pack harness
Support the panel with one hand. On the back of the armrest area locate the main switch pack connector (window switches, mirror switches, mirror fold). Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off. If the lock is a slide-lock style, use a small pick to slide the purple/white secondary lock back before pressing the primary tab.
Do not pull on the wires — pull the connector body only.

  8. 8
Disconnect the electronic door release harness
Locate the connector feeding the electronic interior release button (front-upper area of the panel on Highland). Release its lock tab and unplug it. This is a small connector with fine-gauge wires — do not flex it sideways.
  9. 9
Disconnect remaining harnesses (tweeter, ambient light, puddle lamp if panel-fed)
Disconnect the tweeter speaker connector at the panel's front-upper corner, the ambient/courtesy light connector along the panel midline if present, and any additional connectors routed to the panel. Note the routing of each harness — some sit in foam channels that must be reseated on reinstall to prevent rattles.
  10. 10
Disengage the mechanical backup cable (if equipped at panel)
On Highland Model 3 the mechanical emergency interior release cable is anchored to the panel near the front armrest pocket. If the panel is to be fully removed, unclip the cable end from the panel-side pivot (it lifts out of a keyhole slot) and free the cable jacket from its retaining clip. Note its routing for reassembly — the cable must move freely or the manual release will not work.
If the mechanical backup release cable is reinstalled incorrectly, occupants cannot exit the car if 12V power is lost. Verify cable routing and free travel before final reassembly.
  11. 11
Remove the panel and inspect the vapor barrier
Lift the panel away from the door and place it face-down on the padded surface. Inspect the plastic vapor barrier sheet bonded to the inner door shell. If the barrier is torn or the butyl bead is compromised and you intend to do further work behind it (regulator, latch, speaker), plan to replace the butyl sealant on reassembly. Do not leave gaps — a compromised vapor barrier causes interior water leaks and HVAC noise.

Reassembly

  1. Reseat the vapor barrier with fresh butyl rope sealant if it was disturbed. The barrier MUST be continuous around its perimeter.
  2. Reconnect harnesses in reverse order: mechanical backup release cable first (verify free travel by pulling the panel-side handle and confirming the latch trips before the panel goes back on), then tweeter, ambient light, electronic release, then the main switch pack. Confirm each connector clicks fully home and any secondary locks are seated.
  3. Hang the panel on the belt-line: align the upper hooks over the inner glass weatherstrip and lower the panel straight DOWN until the hooks seat. The panel should sit flush at the top with no gap to the window seal.
  4. Align all perimeter clips to their door shell holes, then press firmly with the heel of your hand directly over each clip until you feel/hear it seat. Do not slap the panel — aluminum door shell deforms.
  5. Reinstall the two armrest grab-cup Torx screws and torque to Door Panel Screws spec (2.0 Nm / 1.5 lb-ft). Do not overtighten — these thread into thin metal inserts.
  6. Reinstall the upper-front Torx screw and torque to Door Panel Screws spec (2.0 Nm / 1.5 lb-ft). Reinstall the decorative trim cap, pressing both clips in until flush.
  7. Replace the rubber mat in the armrest pull-cup.
  8. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. Close all doors and allow the vehicle to wake fully (touchscreen back to normal home screen).

Verification

  • Cycle the power window down and back up; on full close, hold the switch up for 3 seconds to reinitialize the one-touch/anti-pinch calibration. Confirm one-touch up and down both work.
  • Test the electronic interior door release button — door should unlatch with a single press.
  • Test the mechanical backup interior release (the small pull at the front of the armrest area). Door must unlatch with the manual pull as well — this is a safety-critical check.
  • Test side mirror adjustment, mirror fold (if equipped), and mirror heat from the touchscreen controls routed through the door switch pack.
  • Tap along the perimeter of the panel with a knuckle — a properly seated panel sounds uniform with no rattle. Drive at low speed over a rough surface and listen for clip rattle or buzz from the speaker area.
  • Spray a light water test along the top of the door (with window closed) and check for any drip into the door card area — indicates compromised vapor barrier.
  • Confirm no error messages on the touchscreen related to door modules, window pinch sensor, or mirror modules.
