Replace a single brake hydraulic line on the 2024 Tesla Roadster (Tri Motor). Note: this generation Roadster is a low-volume vehicle with limited published service data — verify all chassis-specific details against the Tesla Service Manual before proceeding.
Warnings
⚠️Brake fluid is corrosive — it will damage paint, aluminum body panels, and composite bodywork on the Roadster. Cover painted surfaces and clean spills immediately with water.
⚠️Air in the hydraulic system will cause brake failure. The system MUST be properly bled after any line is opened.
⚠The 2024 Roadster is a very low-volume vehicle with limited public service documentation. If the line routing, fitting type, or torque differs from generic guidance, STOP and consult the Tesla Service Manual.
⚠Use only fresh, sealed DOT 3 brake fluid as specified. Do not substitute DOT 5 (silicone).
⚠Use a proper flare-nut (line) wrench on hydraulic fittings. An open-end wrench will round the soft fitting and turn a 1-hour job into a much larger repair.
ℹ️Tesla recommends a full brake fluid flush every 2 years regardless of mileage — consider performing a full flush while the system is open.

Parts
- Replacement brake line (manufacturer-specified for this corner) × 1 — Refer to Tesla Service Manual / parts catalog for the exact line being replaced
- Copper sealing washers (if used at fitting) × 2 — Per OEM specification
- Line retaining clips × 1 — As required if damaged on removal
Fluids
- DOT 3 Brake Fluid (sealed container) — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V (or 16V/48V on applicable models) low-voltage battery. See architecture notes above for location — refer to the Roadster Service Manual for exact battery location and disconnect procedure.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Identify the specific brake line to be replaced and confirm correct replacement part on hand before starting.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir level and condition; top off with fresh DOT 3 if needed before opening the system.
- Loosen the relevant wheel lug nuts while the vehicle is on the ground, then raise and support the vehicle on jack stands at the manufacturer-specified lift points.
- Remove the wheel(s) needed to access the line.
- Have a helper available for pedal-bleed method, or set up a one-person bleeder.
Procedure
- 1Protect surrounding surfacesPlace absorbent rags and a catch pan beneath the work area. The Roadster uses lightweight body panels and aluminum/composite chassis components — brake fluid contact will cause permanent damage if not wiped immediately.
- 2Minimize fluid lossEither install a brake hose clamp on the upstream flexible section (only on rubber hose, never on a hard line) or seal the master cylinder reservoir cap with plastic film to slow gravity drainage. This reduces mess and bleeding time.⚠Never clamp a hard metal brake line — it will deform and require replacement.
- 3Loosen the line fittingsUsing a properly sized flare-nut wrench, carefully break loose both end fittings of the line being replaced before fully removing anything. If a fitting resists, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak; do not force a rounded fitting.⚠Hold the mating component (caliper inlet, hard line, or junction block) with a backup wrench to prevent twisting it.Torque specLine Fittings20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 4Release line retainers and clipsLocate and release any chassis retaining clips, P-clamps, or bracket fasteners holding the line in place along its routing. Note the exact routing and clip locations — photograph if possible — so the new line is installed identically.
- 5Remove the old lineFully unthread both fittings and remove the line from the vehicle. Immediately cap or plug both open ports on the vehicle side to prevent contamination and reduce fluid loss. Inspect the removed line for the failure cause (corrosion, abrasion, impact) and check the surrounding chassis for the same.
- 6Compare old and new linesLay the new line next to the old one and confirm length, bend pattern, end-fitting type, and any integral brackets match exactly. A mismatched line will route incorrectly and may chafe against suspension or body components.⚠If the new line does not match the old one exactly, STOP — verify part number with the Tesla Service Manual / parts catalog before installing.
- 7Install the new lineRoute the new line following the original path. Start both end fittings BY HAND for several turns to ensure they are not cross-threaded. Reinstall all retaining clips and P-clamps so the line cannot vibrate or contact moving suspension components.⚠️A cross-threaded brake fitting will leak under pressure and cause brake failure. If the fitting does not turn freely by hand, back it out and restart.
- 8Torque the line fittingsUsing a flare-nut crow's-foot adapter on a torque wrench (or a calibrated line wrench technique per the service manual), tighten both fittings to specification. Do not overtighten — the soft seat will deform and leak.Torque specLine Fittings20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 9Bleed the brake systemTop off the master cylinder reservoir with fresh DOT 3. Bleed the affected corner(s) using the manufacturer-specified sequence until clean, air-free fluid flows. Monitor the reservoir continuously and never let it run dry. For other torques on the bleeder hardware, refer to spec.⚠Bleed sequence on the Roadster should follow the Tesla Service Manual. If unavailable, the conventional farthest-from-master-cylinder-first sequence is the safer default — verify before relying on it.⚠️Do not reuse old brake fluid drained during bleeding. It absorbs moisture and contamination.Torque specBleeder Screw10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 10Pressure test and leak checkWith the system bled, have a helper firmly press and hold the brake pedal while you visually inspect both new fittings and the full length of the line for any seepage. Repeat with several hard pedal applications. Wipe each fitting dry and re-inspect after a few minutes.⚠️Any visible weep at a fitting under pedal pressure means the connection is not sealed. Do not drive the vehicle until it is leak-free.
Reassembly
- Top off the master cylinder reservoir to the MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid and reinstall the cap.
- Reinstall the wheel(s) and snug the lug nuts by hand.
- Lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Final-torque the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery.
- Clean any residual brake fluid from chassis, body, and tools with water and dry thoroughly.
Verification
- With the vehicle stationary and engine/drive off, press the brake pedal firmly several times — pedal should be firm and high, not spongy or sinking. A soft pedal indicates remaining air; re-bleed.
- Power up the vehicle and check the instrument cluster / center display for any brake-system, ABS, or stability control warnings. Address any active faults before driving.
- With the vehicle still stationary, inspect the new line and both fittings one more time under brake pressure — no weeping is acceptable.
- Perform a low-speed road test in a safe area: brake gently from 5–10 mph, then progressively harder, confirming straight-line stops and a firm pedal. Re-inspect the fittings for leaks afterward.
- Verify reservoir level after the road test and top off if needed.
- Reminder: Tesla recommends a full brake fluid flush every 2 years. Record today's date if a complete flush was performed; otherwise schedule the next flush per the maintenance interval.
