The 2011 Avalon with the 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 is generally solid, but this generation suffers from a catastrophic oil-gel and piston-scuffing issue if maintenance lapses. The transmission cooler line and mounts are wear items worth watching.
Oil Sludge / Piston Scuffing Leading to Engine Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 mi or worse), Blue smoke on startup or acceleration, Rough idle, misfires, loss of power, Metallic rattle from cylinder area, eventual rod knock
Fix: 2GR-FE engines with poor oil-change history develop sludge that starves the pistons; rings score the cylinder walls. Requires short-block replacement or full rebuild. 18-24 labor hours for short block, 28-35 for complete teardown and machine work.
Estimated cost: $4,500-8,500
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Corrosion and Leak
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Transmission fluid puddle under engine bay, driver side, Burnt ATF smell, Slipping or delayed shifts if fluid level drops significantly
Fix: Steel cooler lines rust through where they pass near the frame. Replace both feed and return lines; flush cooler and top off fluid. 2.5-3.5 hours labor. Prevent by inspecting lines during oil changes and treating surface rust early.
Estimated cost: $450-750
Front and Rear Transmission Mounts Collapse
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 90,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or thud when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse, Vibration at idle, especially with A/C on, Visible sagging or fluid leak from rubber mount
Fix: Hydraulic mounts fail, allowing excessive drivetrain movement. Replace front and rear mounts together. 2-3 hours labor. OEM mounts last longer than aftermarket in this application.
Estimated cost: $350-600
VVT-i Gear Rattle on Cold Start (Cam Phaser)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 120,000-180,000 mi
Symptoms: Loud rattle for 2-5 seconds on cold start, then quiets, Check engine light with cam timing codes (P0010, P0011, P0012), No performance loss once warm
Fix: VVT-i oil control valve gets clogged or the cam phaser gear wears. Start with oil change using 0W-20 and OCV cleaning; if rattle persists, replace VVT gear and oil control valve. 4-6 hours labor per bank if gear replacement needed.
Estimated cost: $250-1,200
Water Pump Weep from Bearing Seal
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Coolant drip from timing cover area, Slight squealing or bearing noise from front of engine, Coolant level drops slowly over weeks
Fix: Pump bearing seal deteriorates. Requires timing cover removal. Always replace with OEM pump and do timing chain inspection while in there. 5-7 hours labor. Do water pump, thermostat, and serpentine belt together.
Estimated cost: $850-1,400
Steering Intermediate Shaft Clunk
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or knock felt in steering wheel when turning at low speed or over bumps, No play in wheel, but audible/tactile pop, Worse in cold weather
Fix: U-joint in intermediate shaft wears or loses grease. Toyota issued TSB; updated shaft with improved joint. 1.5-2 hours labor. Grease injection helps temporarily but replacement is permanent fix.
Estimated cost: $300-500
Owner tips
Change oil every 5,000 mi with 0W-20 full synthetic — this engine does NOT tolerate extended intervals despite Toyota's 10k recommendation
Inspect transmission cooler lines annually for rust starting at 80k mi; wire-brush and paint early surface corrosion
Use only Toyota WS ATF for transmission; third-party fluids cause shift issues in the U660E
If buying used, get a compression test and borescope inspection to check for cylinder scoring; oil consumption above 1 qt per 3,000 mi is a walk-away sign
Buy one with documented 5k oil changes and no oil-consumption history; skip any that burned oil or had deferred maintenance — engine replacement cost exceeds the car's value.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Toyota Avalon vehicles manufactured February 9, 2010, to October 22, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the sub-woofer speaker located in the trunk may experience an intermittent electrical short which may cause damage to the integrated circuit (IC) in the audio amplifier. In some cases, the damaged IC may allow a constant electrical current flow to the sub-woofer.
Consequence: A constant electrical current flow may cause the sub-woofer to overheat, increasing the risk of fire.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the audio system amplifier and install a protective cover around the sub-woofer, free of charge. The recall began on July 1,2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.
