The 2024 bZ4X is Toyota's first dedicated EV platform, built on e-TNGA architecture with Subaru collaboration. Being first-model-year for a brand-new powertrain, we're seeing early teething issues with software integration, HVAC systems, and some powertrain mount concerns that shouldn't exist on a vehicle this new.
Electric Motor Mount Failures
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 5,000-25,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking or banging noise during acceleration or deceleration, Vibration felt through floorboard at low speeds, Harsh engagement when switching drive modes
Fix: Replace failed motor mount(s), typically the rear motor mount on AWD models. Requires lifting powertrain slightly. 2.5-3.5 hours labor. Toyota has updated mount design as of late 2023.
Estimated cost: $600-1,200
HVAC Defroster Failure (Subject to Recall)
Common · high severity
Symptoms: Windshield defroster stops blowing heated air, Reduced or no airflow to windshield vents, HVAC system works for cabin but not defrost, Foggy windshield cannot be cleared in cold/wet conditions
Fix: Software calibration issue affecting HVAC actuator control. Dealer reflash of HVAC control module, 0.8-1.2 hours. Some cases require actuator replacement if mechanical failure occurred. Covered under recall.
Estimated cost: $0 (recall) or $400-800 if out of warranty
12V Battery Premature Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 8,000-30,000 mi
Symptoms: Vehicle won't enter ready mode despite charged high-voltage battery, Instrument cluster dead or flickering, Accessory systems fail to initialize, Multiple warning lights on startup
Fix: Replace 12V auxiliary battery. EV systems drain this battery more aggressively than ICE vehicles, and early production batteries appear undersized. 0.5 hours labor. Battery often fails without warning.
Estimated cost: $250-450
Inverter Cooling System Issues
Rare · high severity
Typical onset: 15,000-40,000 mi
Symptoms: Power reduction warning on dashboard, Vehicle enters turtle/limp mode, High-voltage system temperature warning, Loss of regenerative braking effectiveness
Fix: Inverter coolant pump failure or coolant leak from inverter heat exchanger. Pump replacement 2.5-3.5 hours; heat exchanger requires inverter removal, 6-8 hours. Requires special EV coolant and high-voltage safety procedures.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,800 (pump) or $3,500-5,500 (heat exchanger)
Dashboard Rattle and Loose Trim Panels
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 1,000-20,000 mi
Symptoms: Clicking or rattling from instrument panel area, Squeaks from upper dashboard on rough roads, Loose A-pillar trim covers, Noise increases with temperature changes
Fix: Remove and reinstall dashboard trim panels with updated clips and foam tape. Multiple TSBs address various locations. 1.5-3.0 hours depending on area. More annoyance than mechanical concern.
Estimated cost: $200-500
AC Evaporator Condensation Drain Clog
Occasional · medium severity
Symptoms: Water pooling in front passenger footwell, Musty odor from HVAC system, Wet carpet on passenger side after AC use, Condensation dripping inside cabin
Fix: Clear evaporator drain tube, often requires dashboard removal to properly access and clean. Design allows debris accumulation easily. 3-5 hours labor if full dash removal needed.
Estimated cost: $400-900
Shift-by-Wire Selector Malfunction
Rare · high severity
Symptoms: Gear selector not responding to input, Vehicle stuck in park despite button presses, Inconsistent shift response (sometimes works, sometimes doesn't), Warning message about shift system malfunction
Fix: Replace shift-by-wire control module or entire selector assembly. Software calibration alone fixes some cases (1 hour), full selector replacement 2-3 hours. Toyota still learning this system.
Estimated cost: $150-300 (software) or $800-1,500 (hardware)
Owner tips
Keep 12V battery on tender if vehicle sits unused for more than 5-7 days—EV systems draw continuously
Pre-condition cabin while plugged in to reduce stress on HVAC system and preserve range
Monitor for software update notices from Toyota—many early issues resolved via OTA or dealer updates
Check motor mounts at every service; early failure pattern suggests inspection every 10k miles
Use Toyota-specified EV coolant only—aftermarket substitutes cause inverter issues
Skip the 2024 unless heavily discounted—wait for 2025+ after Toyota irons out first-year bugs, or buy CPO with extended warranty coverage for powertrain electronics.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.
