Tail Light Bulb

This procedure covers the replacement of tail light bulbs in the 2012-2017 Toyota Camry, accessed from inside the trunk without removing the entire assembly.

• Tail light bulb (brake/turn signal) × 1 — 7443 or equivalent, verify fitment
• Tail light bulb (reverse) × 1 — 921 or equivalent, verify fitment

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
2. Open trunk fully and ensure adequate lighting
3. Identify which bulb has failed (brake, turn signal, reverse, or tail light)
4. Have replacement bulb ready and verify correct type before starting

Procedure

1. 1

   Access the tail light assembly
   From inside the trunk, locate the trunk lining panel behind the tail light assembly on the affected side. You will see a small access panel or the edge of the trunk lining that needs to be pulled back.

   Remove trunk lining fasteners
   If present, remove any plastic clips or fasteners securing the trunk lining using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool. Gently pry to avoid breaking clips. On some models, you can simply pull back the carpeted lining without removing fasteners.

   Locate the bulb socket
   Behind the tail light assembly, identify the bulb socket you need to access. There are typically 3-4 sockets: tail/brake light (larger socket), turn signal, reverse light, and sometimes a side marker. The reverse light socket is typically the lowest position.

   Remove the bulb socket
   Grasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees). Pull the socket straight out from the housing. Do not pull on the wiring harness, only the socket body.

   Remove the failed bulb
   For wedge-base bulbs (reverse light), pull the bulb straight out of the socket. For bayonet-style bulbs (brake/turn signal), press in slightly and rotate counterclockwise to release, then pull out. Inspect the socket for corrosion or burn marks.

   Install the new bulb
   Insert the new bulb into the socket. For wedge-base types, push firmly until fully seated. For bayonet types, align the pins with the socket slots, push in, and rotate clockwise until it locks. Do not touch the glass portion of halogen bulbs with bare fingers.

   Reinstall the socket
   Align the socket tabs with the slots in the tail light housing and insert the socket. Rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Gently tug to ensure it is secure.

   Test the repair
   Before reassembling the trunk lining, have an assistant operate the lights (brake, turn signal, or reverse as applicable) or use a remote start/brake pedal holder to verify the new bulb functions correctly.

   Reinstall trunk lining
   Replace any clips or fasteners that were removed and ensure the trunk lining is properly positioned. Press firmly on any clip locations to ensure they are fully seated.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all bulb sockets are fully locked into their housings with a clockwise turn
2. Verify trunk lining is secured and does not interfere with tail light assembly
3. Close trunk and confirm tail light operation from outside the vehicle

Verification

• Turn on headlights and verify tail lights illuminate
• Press brake pedal and confirm brake lights illuminate on both sides
• Activate turn signals and verify proper flashing on the repaired side
• Shift into reverse (with engine running) and confirm reverse lights illuminate
• Check for proper bulb seating by ensuring no moisture can enter the socket
