This procedure covers removal and replacement of the output speed sensor on the U660E/U760E automatic transmission in a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠Transmission fluid may be hot if vehicle was recently driven. Allow transmission to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting work.
⚠Do not start the engine with the speed sensor removed, as this will cause transmission fluid to drain from the sensor port and set diagnostic codes.
ℹ️The output speed sensor is located on the driver's side of the transmission case, accessible from underneath the vehicle.

Fluids
- Toyota WS ATF — 0.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently operated
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands at manufacturer lift points
- Remove plastic engine under cover using 10mm socket and trim tools
- Locate output speed sensor on left side of transmission case near axle output
Procedure
- 1Disconnect electrical connectorPress the lock tab on the output speed sensor electrical connector and disconnect it from the sensor. Carefully move the wiring harness aside to provide working clearance.
- 2Position drain panPlace a drain pan directly beneath the output speed sensor location. Expect approximately 100-200ml of ATF to drain when the sensor is removed.
- 3Remove sensor mounting boltUsing a 10mm socket with extension, remove the single bolt securing the output speed sensor to the transmission case. Keep the bolt in a safe location for reinstallation.
- 4Extract output speed sensorCarefully pull the output speed sensor straight out from the transmission case. Rotate gently while pulling if resistance is felt, but do not force. Allow residual ATF to drain into pan. Inspect the sensor tip for metal shavings or damage.
- 5Inspect and clean sensor boreUsing a clean shop towel, wipe the sensor bore opening in the transmission case. Check for debris or metal contamination. Remove and discard the old O-ring from the sensor or bore if it remained in the case.
- 6Prepare new sensorInstall the new O-ring onto the replacement output speed sensor. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean Toyota WS ATF to ease installation and prevent damage during insertion.
- 7Install new sensorAlign the new output speed sensor with the bore and insert it straight into the transmission case. Push firmly until the sensor mounting flange is flush against the case surface. Ensure the sensor is fully seated before installing the bolt.
- 8Install and torque mounting boltThread the mounting bolt by hand to ensure proper engagement, then torque to specification using a torque wrench. Do not over-tighten as this can crack the sensor housing.
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the electrical connector to the output speed sensor, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Verify the lock tab is fully engaged.
- 10Check ATF levelStart the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. With the engine running and transmission in Park on level ground, check the ATF level using the dipstick or fill plug procedure per manufacturer specifications. Add Toyota WS ATF as needed to bring level to the HOT range.
Reassembly
- Reinstall plastic engine under cover and secure all fasteners
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner
Verification
- Start engine and verify no ATF leaks around the output speed sensor
- Test drive vehicle and confirm speedometer operates correctly
- Verify transmission shifts normally through all gears
- Scan for diagnostic codes and confirm no speed sensor related codes are present (P0722, P0723)
