This procedure replaces the AC compressor clutch coil on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine without discharging the refrigerant system or removing the compressor.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. The compressor and surrounding components can remain hot for over an hour after engine shutdown.
The AC system does not need to be discharged for this procedure. Do not loosen or remove any refrigerant lines.
ℹ️This procedure assumes the clutch coil has failed but the compressor itself is functional. Test the coil with a multimeter before replacement.
ℹ️The clutch plate air gap must be set correctly during reassembly or the AC system will not function properly.

Parts

  • AC compressor clutch coil × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Accessory drive belt × 1 — Use OEM specification (if damaged during removal)

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely for at least 1 hour
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  4. Remove engine splash shield if equipped (multiple 10mm bolts)
  5. Test clutch coil resistance with multimeter at connector - should read 3.0-4.0 ohms; replace if out of spec or open circuit

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove accessory drive belt
Using a 14mm socket on the belt tensioner pulley bolt, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to release tension. Slip the belt off the AC compressor pulley first, then remove from remaining pulleys. Note the belt routing diagram on the radiator support for reinstallation.
  2. 2
    Disconnect clutch coil electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the front of the compressor near the clutch. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
  3. 3
Remove clutch coil retaining snap ring
Using snap ring pliers, carefully remove the snap ring that secures the clutch coil to the compressor front housing. The snap ring is located in a groove on the compressor nose. Work carefully to avoid losing the snap ring or scratching the compressor shaft.
Snap ring can spring out when released. Wear safety glasses and control the pliers carefully.
  4. 4
    Remove clutch coil assembly
With the snap ring removed, carefully slide the clutch coil assembly straight off the compressor nose. The coil may be tight due to age and corrosion. If stuck, gently tap the coil housing with a plastic mallet while pulling evenly. Do not pry against the compressor housing.
  5. 5
    Inspect and clean mounting surfaces
Inspect the compressor nose and shaft for damage, scoring, or excessive wear. Check the clutch plate on the pulley for wear or cracks. Clean the compressor nose mounting surface with a wire brush to remove any rust or debris. Check that the clutch plate moves freely on the hub splines.
  6. 6
    Measure clutch plate air gap
Before installing the new coil, measure the current air gap between the clutch plate and the pulley face using a feeler gauge at three points around the circumference. The gap should be 0.35-0.50mm (0.014-0.020 inches). If out of spec, the clutch plate may need shims added or removed.
ℹ️Incorrect air gap will cause clutch slippage or failure to engage. This is a critical measurement.
  7. 7
    Install new clutch coil
Slide the new clutch coil assembly straight onto the compressor nose, ensuring it seats fully against the mounting surface. Align any locating pins or tabs. The coil should slide on smoothly without forcing. Route the electrical lead away from moving parts.
  8. 8
    Install clutch coil snap ring
Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring into the groove on the compressor nose. Ensure the snap ring is fully seated in the groove around its entire circumference. Tug gently on the clutch coil to verify it is secured by the snap ring.
  9. 9
Verify and adjust clutch plate air gap
Measure the clutch plate air gap again with a feeler gauge at three points. The gap must be 0.35-0.50mm (0.014-0.020 inches). If adjustment is needed, remove the snap ring and coil, then add or remove shims between the clutch plate and hub until the gap is within specification.
  10. 10
    Reconnect clutch coil electrical connector
Plug the electrical connector onto the new clutch coil until it clicks into place. Tug gently to verify it is locked. Ensure the wiring is routed away from the belt path and any hot exhaust components.
  11. 11
    Reinstall accessory drive belt
Following the belt routing diagram, route the belt around all pulleys except the AC compressor. Using a 14mm socket on the tensioner, rotate it counterclockwise to create slack, then slip the belt onto the AC compressor pulley last. Release the tensioner slowly. Verify the belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves.
  12. 12
    Test clutch coil operation
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and turn on the AC system to maximum cooling. Verify the clutch engages with an audible click and the center clutch plate rotates with the pulley. Listen for unusual noises. Check that cold air is produced from the vents.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine splash shield if removed, ensuring all clips and fasteners are secure
  2. Double-check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  3. Verify accessory drive belt alignment on all pulleys before final testing

Verification

  • Start engine and verify accessory drive belt runs smoothly without squealing or misalignment
  • Turn AC on and confirm clutch engages with an audible click within 2-3 seconds
  • Verify compressor operates smoothly without noise, vibration, or belt slippage
  • Confirm cold air flows from vents and AC system cools normally
  • Check for any refrigerant leaks around compressor (though system was not opened)
  • Test AC operation at idle and at 2000 RPM to ensure consistent engagement
