This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the cooling fan motor assembly on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Hot coolant under pressure can cause severe burns.
Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait 90 seconds before working near the cooling fan to prevent unexpected fan activation.
Do not open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Allow the system to cool for at least 2 hours.
ℹ️Toyota Super Long Life Coolant is pink in color. Do not mix with other coolant types.

Parts

  • Cooling fan motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Radiator drain plug O-ring (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 2 qt

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  3. Open hood and secure in upright position
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 90 seconds
  5. Remove engine under cover if equipped (10mm bolts)
  6. Place drain pan under radiator drain petcock on passenger side of radiator

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain coolant from radiator
Locate the drain petcock on the lower passenger side of the radiator. Open the petcock by turning counterclockwise and allow coolant to drain into the drain pan. You do not need to drain the entire system, just enough to lower the level below the upper radiator hose connection (approximately 2 quarts). Close the drain petcock when finished.
    Torque spec
    Drain Petcock7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove upper radiator hose
Locate the upper radiator hose on the driver side of the radiator. Use a flathead screwdriver or pliers to release the spring clamp at the radiator connection. Slide the clamp back on the hose, then twist and pull the hose off the radiator inlet. Position the hose aside. Some residual coolant will drain out.
    Torque spec
    Hose Clamps4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Disconnect cooling fan electrical connectors
Locate the electrical connector on the cooling fan motor, positioned on top of the fan shroud assembly. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off. On dual-fan models, disconnect both fan motor connectors. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Remove fan shroud mounting bolts
Locate the two upper mounting bolts securing the fan shroud assembly to the radiator support. Use a 10mm socket to remove both bolts completely. The fan assembly will still be held in place by lower tabs that engage the radiator.
Support the fan assembly while removing the final mounting bolt to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  5. 5
Remove fan shroud assembly from vehicle
With the upper mounting bolts removed, carefully lift the entire fan shroud assembly straight up and out of the engine bay. The lower portion of the shroud has alignment tabs that insert into the lower radiator support. Lift evenly to disengage these tabs. Set the assembly on a clean work surface.
  6. 6
    Remove fan motor from shroud
Place the fan shroud assembly face down on the work surface. Locate the three fan motor mounting bolts (typically 10mm) securing the motor to the shroud. Remove all three bolts and carefully separate the fan motor from the shroud. Note the position of any rubber isolation mounts or spacers for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Fan Motor Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  7. 7
Install new fan motor to shroud
Position the new fan motor onto the shroud, aligning the mounting holes. Ensure any rubber isolation mounts or spacers are properly positioned. Install the three fan motor mounting bolts and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure the fan blade rotates freely without obstruction.
    Torque spec
    Fan Motor Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  8. 8
Install fan shroud assembly to radiator
Carefully lower the fan shroud assembly into the engine bay. Align the lower tabs with the slots in the lower radiator support and press down gently to engage. Ensure the assembly is seated evenly against the radiator before proceeding.
Take care not to damage radiator fins with the fan blade during installation.
  9. 9
    Install fan shroud mounting bolts
Install the two upper mounting bolts through the fan shroud into the radiator support. Start both bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect the fan motor electrical connector(s), ensuring they click firmly into place. Route the wiring harness as noted during removal. Verify the connector locks are fully engaged.
  11. 11
    Reinstall upper radiator hose
Slide the spring clamp back from the end of the upper radiator hose. Push the hose firmly onto the radiator inlet until it bottoms out. Slide the spring clamp back into position over the radiator inlet connection point, ensuring it is positioned in the groove on the inlet.
    Torque spec
    Hose Clamps4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Refill cooling system
Using a funnel, add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) to the radiator through the radiator cap opening. Fill slowly to allow air to escape. Add coolant until the level reaches the base of the filler neck. Also check and fill the coolant overflow reservoir to the FULL mark. Install the radiator cap securely.
  13. 13
Reinstall under cover and battery cable
If removed, reinstall the engine under cover. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten securely.

Reassembly

  1. Double-check all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
  2. Verify all hose clamps are properly positioned in their grooves
  3. Ensure no tools or parts are left in the engine bay
  4. Verify radiator drain petcock is fully closed

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature while monitoring for leaks around the radiator hose connection
  • Observe the cooling fan operation. The fan should activate when the engine reaches approximately 200°F (93°C) or when the A/C is turned on
  • Listen for unusual noises from the fan motor during operation
  • After the engine reaches operating temperature, turn off the engine and allow it to cool for 15 minutes, then recheck coolant level in both the radiator and overflow reservoir. Add coolant if necessary
  • Check under vehicle for any coolant leaks from the drain petcock
  • Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
