This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the electric power steering (EPS) control module on the 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Always disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds before working on any electronic steering components to prevent SRS airbag system deployment and module damage
Do not turn the steering wheel with the EPS module disconnected or removed, as this may damage internal components or set diagnostic trouble codes
ℹ️The EPS module contains sensitive electronics. Handle by the edges only and avoid touching connector pins. Do not drop or impact the module
ℹ️After replacement, steering angle sensor calibration may be required using a compatible scan tool

Parts

  • Electric Power Steering Control Module × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Electrical connector grease (dielectric) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure wheels are in the straight-ahead position before beginning work
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds minimum
  4. Gather all tools and replacement parts before starting

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws securing the upper and lower steering column covers. Carefully separate the covers and set aside. There are typically 3-4 screws total holding both covers together.
  2. 2
    Locate the EPS control module
The EPS module is mounted on the steering column between the instrument panel and the firewall. It is a rectangular silver or black metal housing with multiple electrical connectors. Identify the module and verify access to mounting bolts and connectors.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate the two main electrical connectors on the EPS module. Press the locking tabs and carefully disconnect both connectors from the module. Gently pull the connectors straight out to avoid bending pins. If connectors are difficult to remove, check for secondary locking mechanisms.
Do not force connectors. Inspect for damaged pins or corroded terminals before disconnecting
  4. 4
    Remove EPS module mounting bolts
Using a 12mm socket, remove the mounting bolts securing the EPS module to the steering column bracket. There are typically 2-3 bolts. Support the module with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove EPS module from vehicle
Carefully slide the EPS module away from the steering column assembly. The module may have a keyed connection or alignment pins. Gently wiggle while pulling straight back if needed. Once free, remove the module from the vehicle and place it on a clean work surface.
  6. 6
    Inspect steering column coupling
With the module removed, inspect the steering column coupling and shaft for wear, damage, or corrosion. Check that the coupling bolt is secure and not damaged. This is a good opportunity to verify the steering shaft condition while access is available.
ℹ️If the coupling bolt was disturbed during removal, it must be retorqued to specification
    Torque spec
    Coupling Bolt34 Nm (25 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Prepare new EPS module
Remove the new EPS module from packaging. Inspect electrical connectors on the new module for any shipping damage or debris. Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the connector seals (not the pins) to ensure moisture protection. Compare the old and new modules to verify correct part number and connector configuration.
  8. 8
    Install new EPS module
Position the new EPS module on the steering column, aligning any guide pins or keyed features. Slide the module into place ensuring it seats fully against the mounting bracket. The module should fit snugly without forcing.
Ensure the steering column shaft is aligned with the module input. Misalignment can cause binding or module damage
  9. 9
    Install mounting bolts
Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, use a torque wrench with 12mm socket to tighten the mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even clamping force.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Connect both electrical connectors to the EPS module. Push each connector firmly until you hear and feel a distinct click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully locked. Ensure wiring harnesses are routed properly and not pinched or stretched.
  11. 11
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the lower steering column cover, then install the upper cover. Align the cover halves and install all screws. Tighten screws evenly to avoid cracking the plastic trim. Verify all clips and fasteners are properly engaged.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The EPS warning light should illuminate briefly then extinguish. If the light remains on, proceed to verification steps. Start the engine and verify normal power steering operation.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify steering column covers are properly installed with no gaps or loose fasteners
  3. Check that no tools or parts were left in the vehicle
  4. Confirm steering wheel is still in the straight-ahead position

Verification

  • With engine running, turn steering wheel lock-to-lock slowly and verify smooth power assist with no binding, noise, or warning lights
  • Check for diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner. Clear any stored codes if installation was successful
  • Perform a test drive in a safe area, verifying normal steering effort at low and high speeds
  • Verify the EPS warning light remains off during normal operation
  • If equipped, use a scan tool to perform steering angle sensor calibration per Toyota service procedures
  • Recheck all mounting bolt torque values after test drive if any abnormal operation is noted
