This procedure covers the replacement of the fuel pressure regulator on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine, which regulates fuel system pressure to ensure proper engine performance.
Warnings
⚠️Fuel system is under pressure. Failure to properly relieve fuel pressure can result in fuel spray causing fire or injury.
⚠️Gasoline is highly flammable. Work in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources, sparks, and open flames.
⚠Do not smoke or use electronic devices near fuel system components during this procedure.
⚠Engine must be completely cool before beginning work to prevent burns from hot components.

Parts
- Fuel pressure regulator × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Fuel line O-rings × 2 — Toyota 90301-10011 or equivalent
- Regulator mounting gasket × 1 — Usually included with regulator
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Ensure engine is completely cool
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before proceeding
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on the four corner clips
- Place shop towels and drain pan under fuel rail area to catch any residual fuel
Procedure
- 1Relieve fuel system pressureLocate the fuel pump relay in the engine compartment fuse box (relay EFI-1). Remove the relay, then attempt to start the engine. The engine will start briefly and then stall as fuel pressure is depleted. Crank the engine 2-3 more times to ensure all pressure is relieved. Turn ignition to OFF position.⚠️This step is critical. Skipping fuel pressure relief will cause fuel spray when lines are disconnected.
- 2Disconnect fuel feed lineLocate the fuel feed line connection at the fuel rail. Press the release tabs on the quick-connect fitting using the appropriate fuel line disconnect tool while pulling the line away from the fuel rail. Have shop towels ready to catch residual fuel. Cap or plug the disconnected line to prevent contamination.
- 3Remove intake air components if necessaryDepending on access, you may need to remove the air intake tube or resonator for better clearance to the fuel rail. Loosen hose clamps and disconnect any vacuum lines as needed. Label connections for reassembly.
- 4Disconnect fuel injector electrical connectorsPress the release tab on each of the four fuel injector connectors and carefully pull them straight off the injectors. Move the wiring harness aside to provide access to the fuel rail mounting bolts.
- 5Remove fuel rail assemblyRemove the two fuel rail mounting bolts (one at each end of the rail). Carefully pull the fuel rail assembly straight up to disengage the injectors from the intake manifold. The injectors will come out with the rail. Place the assembly on a clean work surface with the injectors facing up.⚠Do not twist or bend the fuel rail as this may damage the injectors or rail.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 6Access fuel pressure regulatorWith the fuel rail removed, locate the fuel pressure regulator mounted on the fuel rail. It is typically located at one end of the rail and is a cylindrical component with a vacuum hose connection. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the regulator by gently pulling it off.
- 7Remove old fuel pressure regulatorRemove the regulator mounting screws securing the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail. Carefully pull the regulator out of the fuel rail housing. Inspect the mounting bore for debris or damage. Remove and discard the old O-ring or gasket.Torque specRegulator Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 8Install new fuel pressure regulatorLubricate the new O-ring with clean gasoline and install it onto the new fuel pressure regulator. Insert the regulator into the fuel rail housing, ensuring proper alignment. Install the regulator mounting screws and tighten to specification in a cross pattern.ℹ️Ensure the O-ring is properly seated before tightening screws to prevent fuel leaks.Torque specRegulator Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 9Reinstall fuel rail assemblyInstall new O-rings on each fuel injector if they were disturbed. Lubricate the injector O-rings with clean gasoline. Carefully align the fuel injectors with the intake manifold ports and press the fuel rail assembly straight down until the injectors are fully seated. Install the fuel rail mounting bolts and tighten to specification.⚠Ensure all injectors seat evenly. Uneven seating can cause vacuum leaks or injector damage.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical and vacuum connectionsReconnect all four fuel injector electrical connectors, ensuring they click into place. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator, pushing it on until it is fully seated.
- 11Reconnect fuel feed lineInstall new O-rings on the fuel line quick-connect fitting if applicable. Push the fuel feed line onto the fuel rail connection until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on the line to verify it is securely locked.⚠Verify the quick-connect fitting is fully engaged to prevent fuel leaks under pressure.
- 12Reinstall air intake componentsReinstall any air intake components that were removed for access. Ensure all hose clamps are tight and vacuum lines are properly connected.
- 13Pressure test fuel systemReinstall the fuel pump relay. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start) and allow the fuel pump to prime the system for 2 seconds. Turn ignition OFF, then ON again. Repeat this cycle 3-4 times. Carefully inspect all fuel connections for leaks, particularly at the fuel rail and pressure regulator area.⚠️If any fuel leaks are observed, immediately turn off ignition and relieve fuel pressure before attempting repairs.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning the four corner clips and pressing down until they click into place
- Verify all tools and parts have been removed from the engine compartment
- Clean up any spilled fuel with shop towels and dispose of properly
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for fuel leaks
- Check for smooth idle quality with no rough running or hesitation
- Verify no fuel odor is present in or around the vehicle
- Rev engine to 2500-3000 RPM and verify smooth acceleration and no fuel leaks under increased pressure
- Perform a test drive to confirm normal engine performance and fuel delivery
- Recheck all fuel connections after test drive for any signs of seepage
