Replace the idler pulley on the serpentine belt system to eliminate bearing noise or restore proper belt tension and alignment.
Warnings
⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Belt components can retain heat for 30+ minutes.
⚠The serpentine belt is under significant tension. Control the tensioner carefully to avoid injury or damage.
ℹ️Inspect the serpentine belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying while removed. Replace if any wear is present.

Parts
- Serpentine belt idler pulley assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Serpentine belt (if worn or damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support on jack stands
- Remove right front wheel to access engine compartment from wheel well (optional for better access)
Procedure
- 1Locate the idler pulleyFrom above the engine or through the right front wheel well, identify the idler pulley. On the 2.5L I4, it is typically positioned on the lower right side of the engine, between the crankshaft pulley and the alternator. The idler pulley has a smooth surface (no grooves) and rotates freely on a single bolt.
- 2Document belt routingTake a photo of the serpentine belt routing with your phone, or refer to the belt routing diagram on the engine compartment label. This is critical for correct reinstallation. Note the path around the idler pulley, tensioner, water pump, alternator, and crankshaft.
- 3Release belt tensionLocate the automatic belt tensioner (has a 15mm bolt head in the center). Using a 15mm wrench or 3/8 breaker bar in the tensioner bolt, rotate the tensioner clockwise to release tension. Hold tension while proceeding to the next step.⚠Maintain firm control of the tensioner. It will spring back forcefully when released.
- 4Remove serpentine beltWhile holding the tensioner in the relaxed position, slip the serpentine belt off one of the pulleys (alternator is easiest). Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position. Remove the belt completely from all pulleys and set aside.
- 5Remove idler pulley boltUsing a 14mm socket and ratchet, remove the center bolt securing the idler pulley to its mounting bracket. The bolt may have medium threadlocker applied. Keep the bolt if reusing or discard if a new bolt is provided with the replacement pulley.Torque specIdler Pulley Bolt45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 6Remove idler pulleyPull the idler pulley assembly straight off the mounting stud or bracket. Inspect the mounting surface for debris, corrosion, or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a wire brush or clean rag if necessary.
- 7Inspect related componentsSpin the belt tensioner pulley by hand to check for roughness or noise. Inspect the tensioner arm for play or looseness. Check all other pulleys (alternator, water pump, crankshaft) for bearing noise or wobble. Replace any suspect components now to avoid repeated disassembly.
- 8Install new idler pulleyPosition the new idler pulley onto the mounting stud or bracket. Ensure it seats flush against the mounting surface with no gaps. Thread the mounting bolt by hand to ensure proper thread engagement before tightening.
- 9Torque idler pulley boltUsing a torque wrench and 14mm socket, tighten the idler pulley bolt to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). Verify the pulley rotates smoothly without binding or excessive play after torquing.Torque specIdler Pulley Bolt45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall serpentine beltFollowing your photo or the belt routing diagram, route the serpentine belt around all pulleys except one (leave the alternator for last). Use the 15mm wrench or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise again, then slip the belt onto the final pulley. Slowly release the tensioner to apply proper tension.
- 11Verify belt alignmentVisually inspect that the serpentine belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves with no misalignment. The belt should sit centered on the smooth idler pulley surface. Check that the belt is not twisted anywhere in the routing path.
Reassembly
- Reinstall right front wheel if removed and torque lug nuts to specification (103 Nm / 76 lb-ft)
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Remove wheel chocks
Verification
- Start the engine and listen for any squealing, chirping, or grinding noises from the belt area
- Observe the belt operation for 30 seconds to ensure proper tracking and no slippage
- Verify the new idler pulley rotates smoothly without wobble or vibration
- Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock with engine running to confirm belt maintains proper tension under accessory load
- Recheck belt tension and alignment after the first 100 miles of operation
