This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor on the 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work. Hot engine components can cause burns.
ℹ️The MAP sensor is located on the intake manifold. Do not disconnect any vacuum hoses unless they obstruct access.
Handle the MAP sensor carefully. Do not touch the sensor element or allow debris to enter the sensor port.

Parts

  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor × 1 — Toyota OEM 89421-20150 or equivalent
  • MAP Sensor O-ring seal × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
  3. Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes if recently operated
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  5. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate the MAP sensor
The MAP sensor is mounted on the intake manifold, typically on the driver's side near the throttle body. It is a small black sensor with a single electrical connector and vacuum port or direct manifold mounting.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the MAP sensor electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the sensor. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Inspect connector for corrosion or damage.
  3. 3
    Remove MAP sensor mounting screws
Using a 10mm socket, remove the two screws securing the MAP sensor to the intake manifold. Keep screws in a clean location for reinstallation.

  4. 4
    Remove MAP sensor from manifold
Gently pull the MAP sensor straight out from the intake manifold. The sensor may have an O-ring seal that provides a vacuum seal. Avoid tilting or twisting to prevent damage to the sensor port on the manifold.
  5. 5
    Inspect and clean mounting surface
Inspect the MAP sensor mounting port on the intake manifold for debris, carbon buildup, or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a shop towel. Remove and discard the old O-ring seal if present. Do not allow debris to enter the manifold.
  6. 6
    Prepare new MAP sensor
Remove new MAP sensor from packaging. If a new O-ring seal is included, install it on the sensor body. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated in its groove. Verify the sensor element is clean and undamaged.
  7. 7
    Install new MAP sensor
Align the new MAP sensor with the mounting port on the intake manifold. Insert the sensor straight into the port, ensuring the O-ring seal makes proper contact. Align the mounting screw holes.
  8. 8
    Install and torque mounting screws
Hand-start both MAP sensor mounting screws to prevent cross-threading. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft) in a criss-cross pattern. Do not overtighten as this can crack the sensor housing.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the MAP sensor until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and allow it to idle. The check engine light may illuminate briefly then turn off. If the light remains on, use an OBD-II scanner to clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes related to the MAP sensor.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify no tools or shop towels are left in the engine bay
  3. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify it idles smoothly without surging or rough running
  • Check that no check engine light or MAP sensor codes are present
  • Test drive the vehicle to confirm proper acceleration and no hesitation
  • Use an OBD-II scanner to verify MAP sensor is reading appropriate manifold pressure values (typically 20-30 kPa at idle, increasing with throttle)
  • Verify no vacuum leaks are present around the MAP sensor mounting location
