Preparation
- Ensure engine and exhaust system are completely cold to prevent burns
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Raise vehicle on lift or securely support on jack stands at proper jacking points
- Locate both oxygen sensors: upstream sensor (A/F ratio sensor) is in exhaust manifold before catalytic converter; downstream sensor is after catalytic converter
- Trace sensor wiring harnesses and identify connector locations in engine bay
- Apply penetrating oil to sensor threads if vehicle has high mileage or shows corrosion
Procedure
- 1Disconnect upstream oxygen sensor electrical connectorFrom engine bay, locate the upstream air/fuel ratio sensor connector mounted on bracket near the firewall passenger side. Press release tab and disconnect the electrical connector. Note routing of wiring harness for reinstallation.
- 2Remove upstream oxygen sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 1)Using O2 sensor socket with wire cutout and ratchet with extension, remove the upstream air/fuel ratio sensor from the exhaust manifold. Sensor is accessed from above in engine bay. Turn counterclockwise to remove. If sensor is seized, use breaker bar for additional leverage. Carefully route sensor and wire through engine bay as you remove it.⚠Avoid bending or pulling on sensor wiring during removal. Damaged wiring can cause sensor failure.
- 3Clean upstream sensor bung threadsUse wire brush to clean threads in exhaust manifold where upstream sensor was installed. Remove carbon deposits and old anti-seize. Inspect threads for damage. If threads are damaged, manifold may require repair before proceeding.
- 4Install new upstream oxygen sensorApply thin coat of nickel-based anti-seize compound to sensor threads only. Do not get anti-seize on sensor tip or body. - 5Reconnect upstream sensor electrical connectorRoute sensor wiring harness following original path, ensuring wire does not contact hot exhaust components or moving parts. Secure harness in any factory clips or brackets. Connect electrical connector until click is heard confirming lock engagement.
- 6Disconnect downstream oxygen sensor electrical connectorFrom underneath vehicle, locate downstream oxygen sensor connector near the transmission tunnel or suspension crossmember. Press release tab and disconnect electrical connector. Connector may be secured in a protective bracket.
- 7Remove downstream oxygen sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 2)Using O2 sensor socket and ratchet with extension from underneath vehicle, remove downstream oxygen sensor from catalytic converter pipe. Turn counterclockwise to remove. Access is easier with wheels straight ahead. If sensor is severely corroded, heating the bung area with propane torch (not sensor itself) may help break corrosion bond.⚠Do not heat the oxygen sensor directly. Heat only the exhaust pipe threads around sensor. Direct heat will destroy sensor element.
- 8Clean downstream sensor bung threadsUse wire brush to thoroughly clean threads in catalytic converter pipe where downstream sensor was installed. Remove all carbon buildup and old anti-seize compound. Inspect threads for stripping or damage.
- 9Install new downstream oxygen sensorApply thin coat of nickel-based anti-seize to sensor threads only, avoiding sensor tip and body. Thread sensor into catalytic converter pipe by hand to start threads properly. Tighten to specification using torque wrench.Torque specO2 Sensor45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect downstream sensor electrical connectorRoute downstream sensor wiring following original path, keeping wire away from exhaust heat and moving suspension components. Secure in factory clips or brackets. Connect electrical connector firmly until lock tab clicks into place.

Reassembly

Verification
- Start engine and listen for exhaust leaks at sensor installation points. Repair any leaks immediately
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify Check Engine Light remains off
- Use OBD-II scanner to verify oxygen sensor readiness monitors complete (may require drive cycle)
- Monitor live data from both sensors: upstream A/F sensor should show rapid voltage fluctuations (0.5-3.5V typical), downstream sensor should show stable readings with occasional slow switching
- Perform test drive including highway and city conditions to ensure sensors respond properly under varying loads
- Recheck for exhaust leaks after first heat cycle when exhaust system has expanded and contracted
