Complete major tune-up service including spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, engine oil change, and throttle body cleaning to restore optimal engine performance and efficiency.
Warnings
⚠️Engine and oil must be cool before beginning work. Hot oil can cause severe burns.
⚠Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for vehicle weight.
⚠Disconnect negative battery terminal before working near ignition coils to prevent accidental spark or airbag deployment.
ℹ️Keep spark plug wells clean and debris-free during service to prevent foreign material entering combustion chambers.

Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning
- Open hood and prop securely
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
- Raise front of vehicle with jack and secure on jack stands
- Remove front splash shield if additional access needed for oil change
Procedure
- 1Drain engine oilPosition drain pan under oil pan drain plug. Using 14mm socket, loosen drain plug carefully. Once loose, finish removing by hand and allow oil to drain completely (5-10 minutes). Inspect drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage. Discard old crush washer and install new crush washer on drain plug. Once oil stops dripping, install drain plug and torque to specification.Torque specOil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 2Replace oil filterLocate oil filter on driver side of engine block. Position drain pan underneath as residual oil will spill. Use oil filter wrench to loosen filter, then spin off by hand. Clean filter mounting surface on engine block with lint-free towel. Apply thin film of fresh oil to new filter gasket. Hand-tighten new filter until gasket contacts mounting surface, then rotate an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use wrench for installation.
- 3Replace engine air filterLocate air filter housing on driver side of engine bay. Release four spring clips securing air box cover. Carefully lift cover away, disconnecting any attached breather hoses if present. Remove old air filter and inspect housing for debris or moisture. Clean housing interior with damp cloth if needed. Install new air filter ensuring proper orientation (ribbed side typically faces down). Reinstall cover and secure all four clips completely.Torque specAir Box Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 4Replace cabin air filterOpen glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stops and lower fully. Locate cabin filter cover on left side behind glove box. Press tabs to remove cover. Slide out old cabin filter, noting airflow direction arrow. Vacuum or wipe filter housing if debris present. Install new filter matching airflow direction arrow. Reinstall cover and reset glove box stops.
- 5Remove ignition coils and access spark plugsLocate four ignition coils on top of engine (visible black plastic assemblies with electrical connectors). Disconnect electrical connector from each coil by pressing release tab and pulling straight up. Remove single 10mm bolt securing each coil. Carefully pull each coil straight up with slight twisting motion to break seal. Inspect coil boots for cracks or oil contamination. Use compressed air or shop vacuum to clean debris from spark plug wells before proceeding.
- 6Remove old spark plugsUsing 14mm spark plug socket with rubber insert, carefully loosen each spark plug. Turn counterclockwise approximately 1-2 full turns to break torque, then verify plug turns freely before removing completely. Remove each plug and inspect electrode wear and color. Gap should show normal light tan/gray deposits. Dark deposits or oil fouling may indicate engine issues requiring attention. Keep plugs organized by cylinder if diagnosis needed.
- 7Install new spark plugsVerify new spark plugs are pre-gapped to 0.039-0.043 inches (1.0-1.1mm) specification for this engine. Do not re-gap iridium plugs unless absolutely necessary. Carefully thread each new plug by hand into cylinder head, ensuring straight threading with no resistance. Once hand-tight, use spark plug socket and torque wrench to tighten to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft). Apply small amount of dielectric grease to inside of ignition coil boots if desired.
- 8Reinstall ignition coilsAlign each ignition coil over its corresponding spark plug and press down firmly until coil seats completely (you should feel it click onto plug). Install 10mm mounting bolt for each coil and tighten securely but do not overtighten. Reconnect electrical connector to each coil, ensuring positive click engagement. Verify all four coils are properly secured and connected.
- 9Clean throttle body (optional but recommended)Locate throttle body on intake manifold (aluminum housing with large air inlet). Loosen hose clamp on intake tube and disconnect from throttle body. Using throttle body cleaner spray and clean towel, carefully clean throttle plate and bore. Do not force throttle plate open; gently prop with finger while cleaning. Wipe away carbon deposits and cleaner residue. Allow to air dry completely before reconnecting intake tube and tightening clamp securely.
- 10Refill engine oilLower vehicle from jack stands if raised. Locate oil filler cap on top of engine (marked with oil can symbol). Remove cap and insert funnel. Pour in 4.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 oil initially. Wait 2 minutes for oil to settle, then check dipstick level. Add remaining oil in small increments until level reaches between MIN and MAX marks on dipstick. Do not overfill. Install oil filler cap securely.
- 11Reconnect battery and initialize systemsReconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Allow fuel pump to prime and check instrument cluster for warning lights. The system may need to relearn idle and throttle position. Start engine and allow to idle for 30 seconds, observing for unusual noises or vibrations. Check for oil leaks around drain plug and filter.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are properly seated and locked
- Confirm air filter housing clips are fully engaged
- Reinstall any splash shields or covers removed during service
- Double-check oil level on dipstick with engine off and level
- Verify oil filler cap and drain plug are tight
Verification
- Start engine and verify smooth idle with no misfires or rough running
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify cooling fan cycles normally
- Check for oil leaks around drain plug and filter after 5 minutes of running
- Verify no check engine light or warning lights on instrument cluster
- Test drive vehicle to confirm improved throttle response and smooth acceleration
- After test drive, recheck oil level when engine is warm and on level ground
- Reset maintenance reminder light in instrument cluster per owner's manual procedure
