Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure replaces the turn signal/multifunction switch (combination switch) located on the steering column of the 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds before working near the steering column to allow the SRS airbag system to fully discharge.
Do not turn the ignition on with the battery disconnected or DTCs may be stored in multiple modules.
Keep the steering wheel centered during removal to prevent damage to the spiral cable (clock spring).
ℹ️The vehicle may require steering angle sensor calibration after battery disconnect if a warning light appears. This typically self-clears after driving straight for a short distance.

Parts

  • Turn signal/combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Turn steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and verify wheels are centered
  3. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key/fob from vehicle
  4. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal, then wait minimum 90 seconds for airbag system capacitor discharge
  5. Adjust steering column to lowest and fully extended position for best access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the Phillips head screws securing the lower cover (typically 2-3 screws). Gently pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside. The upper cover will remain temporarily in place.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
Remove the Phillips head screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2 screws on underside). Carefully separate the upper cover from the column, working around the steering wheel shaft. Lift the cover up and over the steering wheel to remove it completely.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  3. 3
Locate and access the combination switch
With covers removed, identify the combination switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. This unit contains the turn signal stalk and wiper controls. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reassembly reference. Take a photo if helpful for reconnection.
ℹ️The combination switch connector is typically located behind the switch body and may have a locking tab that must be released.
  4. 4
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate the main electrical connector(s) for the combination switch. Press the locking tab(s) and carefully pull the connector(s) straight out from the switch body. There may be 1-2 connectors depending on vehicle equipment. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
Connector locking tabs are plastic and can break if forced. Ensure the tab is fully released before pulling the connector.
  5. 5
    Remove switch mounting screws
Locate the mounting screws securing the combination switch to the steering column bracket (typically 2-3 screws). Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove these screws completely. Keep screws organized as they may be needed for the new switch if not included.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove combination switch assembly
With mounting screws removed and connectors disconnected, carefully slide the combination switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have a tab or guide pin that requires slight angling during removal. Guide the wiring harness through any clips or routing channels as you remove the assembly.
Do not rotate the steering wheel during this process to avoid misaligning the spiral cable clock spring.
  7. 7
    Prepare new switch assembly
Unpack the new combination switch assembly and compare it to the old unit to verify correct replacement part. Check that all electrical connector interfaces match. If the switch includes new mounting screws, set aside the old screws. Route the new switch wiring in the same path as the original.
ℹ️Some replacement switches come with the lever in a shipping position that may need to be adjusted before installation.
  8. 8
    Install new combination switch
Position the new combination switch onto the steering column bracket, aligning any guide pins or tabs. Ensure the switch body sits flush against the mounting surface. Start all mounting screws by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Connect the electrical connector(s) to the new combination switch, ensuring each connector is fully seated and the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is secure. Ensure wiring is properly routed and not pinched or stretched.
Misaligned pins in the connector can cause bent terminals. Align the connector carefully before applying pressure.
  10. 10
    Reinstall upper steering column cover
Position the upper steering column cover over the steering shaft and around the combination switch. Ensure all internal clips and the switch lever pass through the appropriate openings. Install and hand-tighten the cover screws, then torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reinstall lower steering column cover
Align the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column body. Ensure all tabs and alignment features engage properly. Install the cover screws and torque to specification. Verify both covers fit flush with no gaps.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and clear adaptations
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the terminal bolt to specification. The vehicle may display warning lights initially; these should clear after initialization. Do not start the engine yet.
ℹ️Some vehicle systems may need to relearn after battery reconnection, including power window auto-up/down functions.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly secured with no rattles or loose fasteners
  2. Verify the turn signal stalk operates smoothly through its full range of motion without binding
  3. Check that all wiring is properly routed and secured away from moving components
  4. Confirm steering wheel returns to center position freely without interference from covers or switch

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine) and verify instrument cluster illuminates normally
  • Operate turn signal lever in both left and right positions and confirm turn signal indicators flash on instrument cluster and exterior lights operate correctly
  • Test hazard light function and verify all four turn signals flash simultaneously
  • Check high beam, low beam, and flash-to-pass functions operate correctly
  • Test windshield wiper switch in all positions (intermittent, low, high) and verify proper operation
  • Verify no warning lights related to lighting systems remain illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Start engine and retest all combination switch functions under running conditions
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm turn signal self-canceling function works properly after turns
