Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Allow transmission to cool completely (minimum 2 hours)
  3. Raise vehicle and secure on jack stands at all four corners
  4. Remove plastic engine under covers and splash shields
  5. Place large drain pan underneath transmission pan
  6. Clean exterior of transmission pan and surrounding area to prevent contamination
  7. Prepare clean workspace for valve body removal with lint-free towels

    Drain transmission fluid
    Locate the transmission drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. Place drain pan underneath and remove the drain plug slowly using appropriate socket. Allow all fluid to drain completely (approximately 4-5 quarts will drain). Inspect drained fluid for metal particles or debris which may indicate additional transmission damage. Remove and discard old crush washer from drain plug.

    Remove transmission pan
    Remove all transmission pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern, starting from the outer bolts and working inward. Support the pan as you remove the final bolts to prevent spilling remaining fluid. Lower pan carefully and pour any remaining fluid into drain pan. Inspect pan for metal shavings or excessive debris on magnet.
    Additional fluid (1-2 quarts) will drain when pan is removed. Keep drain pan positioned underneath.

    Remove transmission oil strainer
    The oil strainer is secured by three bolts to the valve body. Remove these bolts and carefully lower the strainer assembly. Inspect strainer for debris or damage. Even if replacing valve body, install new strainer during reassembly.

    Disconnect electrical connectors
    Locate and disconnect all electrical connectors attached to the transmission solenoids on the valve body. There are typically 6-8 connectors. Note connector positions and routing. Press release tabs carefully and pull connectors straight out. Use compressed air to clean connector pins if needed.
    Do not pull on wires; only pull on connector bodies to avoid damaging pins or wiring harness.

    Remove manual valve lever connection
    Locate the manual valve lever where it connects to the valve body. This connects to the shift linkage. Note the exact position and orientation before removal. Remove the bolt or clip securing the connection and carefully disconnect the lever from the valve body.

    Remove valve body bolts
    The valve body is secured by approximately 16-20 bolts of varying lengths. Starting from the outer perimeter, remove bolts in a criss-cross pattern. Keep bolts organized by location as they are different lengths. Some bolts may have ground straps or wire clips attached - note their positions. Use a magnetic tray to prevent losing small bolts.
    Bolt lengths vary significantly. Mixing up bolt locations during reassembly can cause transmission case damage.

    Lower valve body assembly
    With all bolts removed, carefully lower the valve body assembly. It may stick slightly due to gasket material. Gently wiggle and pull straight down - do not pry or twist. The valve body is heavy (approximately 15 lbs) and contains springs, so lower it carefully into a clean container or onto clean shop towels. Keep valve body level to prevent internal components from shifting.
    The valve body contains multiple internal springs and check balls. Keep it level and do not shake or invert.

    Inspect transmission case and clean mating surfaces
    With valve body removed, inspect the transmission case interior for debris, metal shavings, or damage. Use compressed air to clean passages, but avoid dislodging any check balls in the case. Clean all gasket material from transmission case mating surface using plastic scraper - never use metal scrapers which can damage aluminum. Wipe clean with lint-free towels. Inspect case for cracks or damage.
    ⚠️Do not direct high-pressure air into transmission case passages as this may dislodge internal check balls or damage seals.

    Prepare new valve body
    Remove new or replacement valve body from packaging in clean area. Verify all solenoids are properly installed and torqued. Check that all passages are clear and no shipping plugs remain installed. If reusing old valve body after service, verify all internal components are correctly positioned per service manual. Install new O-rings on valve body mating surface if applicable.

    Install valve body assembly
    Carefully lift valve body into position, aligning all passages and bolt holes. Keep valve body level during installation. Guide manual valve lever into correct position. Start all bolts by hand before tightening any. Install bolts in correct locations based on notes from disassembly - ensure ground straps and wire clips are reinstalled in original positions.
    Ensure manual valve aligns correctly with detent lever before tightening bolts, or transmission will not shift properly.

    Torque valve body bolts
    Tighten valve body bolts in a criss-cross pattern from center outward in three stages: first to 50%, then 75%, then final torque of 11.0 Nm (8 lb-ft) for standard bolts. Some outer case bolts may require 12.0 Nm - refer to bolt location diagram. Do not overtighten as this can warp the valve body or crack the transmission case.
    Overtightening valve body bolts can cause internal leaks, valve sticking, or transmission case damage.

    Reconnect manual valve lever and electrical connectors
    Reconnect the manual valve lever to the shift linkage, ensuring proper engagement and movement through all gear positions. Reconnect all electrical connectors to solenoids, ensuring each connector clicks firmly into place. Verify connector seals are properly seated.

    Install new transmission oil strainer
    Install new transmission oil strainer to valve body using three mounting bolts. Ensure strainer gasket or O-ring is properly positioned. Tighten strainer bolts to 8.0 Nm (6 lb-ft) in a triangular pattern.

    Clean and install transmission pan
    Thoroughly clean transmission pan with brake cleaner or solvent. Clean magnet in pan. Remove all old gasket material from pan mating surface using plastic scraper. Install new gasket on pan - some gaskets are adhesive-backed, others require RTV sealant per manufacturer instructions. Position pan onto transmission case, aligning all bolt holes.

    Install and torque pan bolts and drain plug
    Install all transmission pan bolts and tighten in a criss-cross pattern from center outward in stages: hand tight, then 50%, then final torque of 12.0 Nm (9 lb-ft). Install new crush washer on drain plug and install drain plug, torquing to 30.0 Nm (22 lb-ft). Do not overtighten drain plug.
    Overtightening pan bolts can warp the pan and cause leaks. Use torque wrench for final tightening.

    Refill transmission fluid
    Locate transmission fill plug on side of transmission case. Remove fill plug. Using fluid transfer pump, add approximately 4.5 quarts of fresh Toyota WS ATF through fill hole. Fluid should begin to drip from fill hole when at proper level (with vehicle level). Install fill plug with torque of 34.0 Nm (25 lb-ft). Additional fluid will be added after initial test drive.
    ⚠️Only use genuine Toyota WS ATF. Other fluids are not compatible and will cause transmission failure.

    Reinstall under covers and lower vehicle
    Reinstall all plastic under covers and splash shields removed during preparation. Ensure all clips and fasteners are secure. Lower vehicle from jack stands to ground.

Reassembly

  1. After initial fill, start engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes
  2. With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) pausing 3 seconds in each position, then return to Park
  3. Check for leaks around pan and drain plug while engine idles
  4. Perform initial test drive for 10-15 minutes, allowing transmission to reach operating temperature
  5. Recheck fluid level with vehicle level and engine running in Park - add fluid as needed through fill plug until fluid begins to drip out
  6. Monitor transmission operation for first 100 miles and recheck fluid level after first drive cycle
