Preparation
- Ensure engine is cold and has been off for at least 2 hours
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Gather all tools and new oil pressure sensor
- Locate oil pressure sensor on the lower front of the engine block, driver's side near the oil filter housing
Procedure
- 1Access the oil pressure sensorThe oil pressure sensor is located on the front lower section of the engine block, near the oil filter housing on the driver's side. You may need to reach from above or below depending on accessibility. Use a flashlight to identify the sensor and its electrical connector.
- 2Disconnect the electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight off the oil pressure sensor. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If the connector is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling to release.
- 3Position drain panPlace an oil drain pan directly below the oil pressure sensor. Expect approximately 2-4 ounces of engine oil to drain when the sensor is removed. Have shop towels ready to catch any splatter.
- 4Remove the old oil pressure sensorUsing a 19mm wrench or deep socket, turn the oil pressure sensor counterclockwise to remove it from the engine block. Oil will begin draining immediately upon loosening. Remove the sensor completely and allow oil to drain into the pan. Keep shop towels handy to clean the area.
- 5Clean the sensor mounting boreWipe the oil pressure sensor mounting hole in the engine block with a clean shop towel. Use a wire brush to clean any debris or old thread sealant from the threads in the bore. Ensure the mating surface is clean and free of debris or metal particles.
- 6Prepare the new sensorApply a small amount of thread sealant (Toyota FIPG or equivalent) to the threads of the new oil pressure sensor. Do not apply sealant to the first 1-2 threads to prevent contamination of the oil system. Use thread sealant sparingly.⚠Do not use excessive thread sealant as it can contaminate the oil system and damage the sensor
- 7Install the new oil pressure sensorThread the new oil pressure sensor into the engine block by hand, turning clockwise. Ensure it threads in smoothly without cross-threading. Hand-tighten until the sensor is seated against the engine block, then use a torque wrench to tighten to specification.⚠Cross-threading will damage the engine block threads. - 8Reconnect the electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the new oil pressure sensor until you hear or feel it click into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Gently tug on the connector to ensure it is secure.
- 9Clean the work areaWipe down any oil residue from the engine block and surrounding components using shop towels. Remove the drain pan and dispose of collected oil properly.
