The 2015 Corolla with the 1.8L 2ZR-FE engine is generally reliable, but suffers from excessive oil consumption due to piston ring design flaws—Toyota's extended warranty covered many cases through 150k miles. The CVT transmission is durable but has some cooler line and mount issues.
Excessive Oil Consumption (Piston Ring Defect)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 40,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: burning one quart per 1,000 miles or less, blue smoke from exhaust on cold start, low oil light coming on between changes, carbon buildup on spark plugs
Fix: Toyota issued TSB and extended warranty (ZE3) to 150k miles for affected engines. Proper fix requires short block replacement or complete engine rebuild with updated piston rings—8 to 12 hours labor for short block, 14-18 hours for full rebuild. Some owners band-aid with frequent top-offs, but risk is bearing damage and catastrophic failure.
Estimated cost: $4,000-7,500
CVT Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: red fluid spots under car near front, transmission overheating warning, whining or delayed engagement when fluid is low, burnt smell from engine bay
Fix: The cooler lines corrode or crack where they connect to the radiator-mounted cooler. Replace both cooler lines and check the cooler itself for internal contamination—2 to 3 hours labor. If caught early, no transmission damage. If driven low on fluid, internal CVT damage may follow.
Estimated cost: $350-650
Transmission Mount Failure (Front Engine Mount)
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: clunk or thud on acceleration or deceleration, vibration at idle in Drive, engine rocks excessively when revved in Park, visible torn rubber or fluid leaking from mount
Fix: The hydraulic front mount wears out and causes driveline slop. Replacement is straightforward—1.5 to 2 hours labor with the right support tooling. Upgraded aftermarket mounts available but OEM is fine for most drivers.
Estimated cost: $250-450
Valve Cover Gasket Oil Leak
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 80,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: oil smell in cabin or under hood, visible oil seepage on top passenger side of engine, oil drips on exhaust manifold causing smoke, low oil level without obvious drips on ground
Fix: The valve cover gasket hardens and seeps oil, often pooling near the spark plug wells. Replace gasket and spark plug tube seals—1.5 hours labor. Common enough to check during any engine oil consumption diagnosis.
Estimated cost: $200-350
Carbon Buildup on Intake Valves (Direct Injection Effect)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: rough idle or misfire codes, hesitation on acceleration, loss of fuel economy, difficult cold starts
Fix: The 2ZR-FE uses port injection so this is less severe than direct-injection engines, but PCV system issues or excessive oil consumption can cause buildup. Walnut blasting or chemical cleaning—3 to 4 hours labor. If oil consumption is not addressed first, buildup returns quickly.
Estimated cost: $400-700
Airbag Control Module Recall (NHTSA 21V-454)
Rare · high severity
Symptoms: airbag warning light illuminated, SRS fault codes stored, airbags may not deploy in crash
Fix: Toyota recall for control module software issue. Dealer reprograms or replaces module at no cost—1 hour. Check VIN eligibility and ensure recall was completed before purchase.
Estimated cost: $0 (recall)
Owner tips
Check oil level every 1,000 miles—oil consumption is the biggest risk on this platform. Document any usage over one quart per 3,000 miles.
If buying used, request proof of short block replacement or oil consumption test results. Engines without the fix are ticking time bombs after 100k.
CVT fluid should be changed every 60,000 miles despite 'lifetime' claims—cheap insurance against cooler line contamination and overheating.
Inspect transmission cooler lines and front engine mount during any under-hood service around 70k miles.
Buy it if oil consumption has been addressed or it's low-mileage enough to qualify for Toyota's extended coverage—otherwise, budget for a short block or walk away.

AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE · 20V024000
2020-01-17 · EA19001
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
Consequence: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.
