The 2016 Corolla with the 1.8L 2ZR-FE is generally reliable, but suffers from a significant oil consumption defect that can lead to catastrophic engine damage if neglected. The CVT transmission is more durable than competitors but has some specific cooling and mount issues.
Excessive Oil Consumption / Piston Ring Failure
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Blue smoke on startup or acceleration, Low oil warning light despite recent changes, Burning 1+ quart per 1,000 miles, Carbon buildup on spark plugs, Check engine light with misfire codes
Fix: The 2ZR-FE engine has poorly-designed piston rings that allow oil to burn in the combustion chamber. Toyota issued TSB EG00216T and extended warranty coverage through a class-action settlement for some VINs. Repair requires complete engine disassembly, new pistons, rings, and honing cylinders. 18-24 labor hours for full rebuild; some shops opt for low-mileage used engine swap at 12-15 hours. Check oil every 500 miles religiously—running low even once can score cylinder walls and accelerate failure.
Estimated cost: $4,500-7,500
CVT Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Pink transmission fluid puddles under engine bay, Transmission overheating warning, Burnt smell after highway driving, Fluid level dropping between services
Fix: The crimped connections on the CVT cooler lines corrode and weep, especially in salt-belt states. Lines run alongside engine block and leak onto subframe. Replacement requires dropping the undertray and sometimes exhaust heat shield. 2.5-3.5 labor hours. Use OEM Toyota lines—aftermarket crimps fail faster. Flush CVT fluid while you're in there if over 60k miles.
Estimated cost: $450-750
Transmission Mount Failure (Engine Side)
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or thud when shifting from Park to Drive/Reverse, Excessive engine movement visible from engine bay, Vibration at idle, worse with A/C on, Drivetrain shudder during acceleration
Fix: The front engine mount (which also supports the CVT) uses a hydraulic design that deteriorates and tears. The rubber separates from the metal bracket or the internal fluid leaks out. Requires engine support from above, 2.0-2.5 labor hours. OEM mount is $200-280 in parts; aftermarket is half that but won't last as long. Inspect all three mounts while you're there—the rear torque mount often sags too.
Estimated cost: $350-550
Fuel System Carbon Buildup (Direct Injection)
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 90,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Rough idle that smooths out after warmup, Hesitation or stumble on light throttle, Reduced fuel economy, Check engine light for lean codes or misfires
Fix: The 2ZR-FE uses port injection (not direct), but the PCV system allows oil vapor to coat intake valves over time. Walnut blasting the intake manifold takes 3-4 hours and costs $400-600. More common if the car sees lots of short trips. Preventive: run a tank of premium with Techron every 10k miles and do mostly highway driving when possible. Not as severe as true DI engines but still happens.
Estimated cost: $400-650
Head Gasket Failure (Oil Consumption Related)
Rare · high severity
Typical onset: 100,000+ mi
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible leaks, White smoke from exhaust, Overheating with no apparent cause, Milky residue on oil cap, Bubbles in coolant reservoir when running
Fix: Not a typical head gasket failure like Subarus, but when the piston ring oil consumption issue goes unchecked, the engine overheats from low oil and warps the head. Requires head removal, resurfacing, new gasket, and timing chain inspection. 10-14 labor hours. Often discovered after catastrophic damage, at which point a used engine ($2,500-3,500 installed) makes more sense than rebuilding.
Estimated cost: $2,200-3,800
Owner tips
Check engine oil every 500-750 miles without fail—the oil consumption issue can destroy this engine before you notice
Join the Toyota oil consumption settlement database if your VIN qualifies (covers some 2016s under extended warranty)
Change CVT fluid every 50k miles despite Toyota's 'lifetime fill' claim—it's cheap insurance at $200-300
Avoid synthetic oil heavier than 0W-20—thicker viscosity masks oil burning and accelerates ring glazing
Keep records of oil top-offs; if consumption exceeds 1 qt per 1,200 mi, start the warranty claim process immediately
Buy one only if the oil consumption test is documented clean or engine has already been rebuilt under warranty—otherwise you're gambling on a $5,000+ engine job.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
Consequence: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.
