Battery

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the 12-volt battery in a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine.

• 12V Battery Group 35 × 1 — Group 35, 500-600 CCA recommended
• Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray × 1 — Optional

Preparation

1. Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground with the engine off and keys removed from ignition
2. Open the hood and prop it securely
3. Locate the battery in the engine compartment on the driver's side
4. Inspect battery for any signs of leakage or damage before proceeding

Procedure

1. 1

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal
   Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the bolt on the negative (-) battery terminal (marked with a minus sign or black cover). Remove the cable from the terminal post and tuck it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact.

   Disconnect the positive battery terminal
   Using a 10mm wrench, loosen the bolt on the positive (+) battery terminal (marked with a plus sign or red cover). Remove the cable from the terminal post. Keep the positive cable away from any metal surfaces.

   Remove the battery hold-down bracket
   Locate the battery hold-down bracket at the base of the battery. Using a 12mm socket with extension, remove the hold-down bolt. Lift the hold-down bracket off the battery and set aside.

   Remove the battery
   Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the battery tray. Battery weighs approximately 35-40 lbs. Use proper lifting technique to avoid injury. Set the old battery aside on a stable surface.

   Inspect and clean the battery tray
   Inspect the battery tray for corrosion, damage, or debris. Clean any corrosion using a wire brush and baking soda solution. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly. Inspect the battery cables and terminals for corrosion or damage.

   Install the new battery
   Carefully lower the new battery into the battery tray, ensuring the positive and negative terminals are positioned on the correct sides (positive terminal toward the front of the vehicle). The battery should sit flush in the tray.

   Install the battery hold-down bracket
   Position the hold-down bracket over the battery base. Install the hold-down bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure the battery is secured firmly and cannot move.

   Connect the positive battery terminal
   Place the positive (+) cable terminal onto the positive battery post. Ensure the terminal is fully seated on the post. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal or battery post.

   Connect the negative battery terminal
   Place the negative (-) cable terminal onto the negative battery post. Ensure the terminal is fully seated on the post. Install the terminal bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench.

    Apply terminal protection
    Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion spray or dielectric grease to both terminals to prevent future corrosion buildup.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all tools are removed from the engine compartment
2. Close the hood securely

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start) and verify that all dashboard lights illuminate normally
• Start the engine and verify it cranks and starts normally
• Check that all electrical accessories function properly (radio, windows, lights)
• Recalibrate power windows if necessary by rolling each window fully down, then fully up and holding the switch for 2 seconds
• Reset the clock and radio presets as needed
• Visually inspect both battery terminals to ensure they are tight and secure with no movement
