Oil Level Sensor

Replace the oil level sensor on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L engine to restore accurate oil level monitoring and eliminate dashboard warning lights.

• Oil level sensor O-ring or gasket × 1 — Usually included with sensor

• Toyota Genuine 0W-20 — 0.5 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
3. Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
4. Raise front of vehicle using jack and secure on jack stands
5. Remove engine splash shield if equipped (10mm bolts)
6. Locate oil level sensor on driver's side of oil pan near front

Procedure

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector on the oil level sensor. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage.

   Position oil drain pan
   Place an oil drain pan directly beneath the oil level sensor. Expect approximately 0.25-0.5 quarts of engine oil to drain when the sensor is removed.

   Remove old oil level sensor
   Using a 12mm socket, carefully loosen and remove the oil level sensor from the oil pan. Turn counterclockwise to remove. Allow oil to drain into the pan below.

   Clean mounting surface
   Using shop towels and parts cleaner or wire brush, thoroughly clean the sensor mounting hole in the oil pan. Remove all old gasket material, debris, and oil residue. Ensure the sealing surface is clean and smooth.
   ⚠Do not allow debris to enter the oil pan during cleaning

   Inspect new sensor and O-ring
   Verify the new oil level sensor includes a new O-ring or gasket. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil. Do not reuse the old seal.

   Install new oil level sensor
   Thread the new oil level sensor into the oil pan by hand, turning clockwise. Ensure it threads smoothly without cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten to specification.
   ⚠Do not overtighten as this may crack the sensor housing or damage the oil pan threads

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Push the wiring harness connector onto the new sensor until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug to verify secure connection. Ensure the connector lock tab is fully engaged.

   Add replacement oil
   Add approximately 0.5 quarts of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil through the oil filler cap to replace the oil lost during sensor replacement. Do not overfill.

   Reinstall splash shield
   If the engine splash shield was removed, reinstall it and secure with 10mm bolts. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
2. Verify no tools or materials were left in the engine bay
3. Double-check oil level sensor torque specification was met

Verification

• Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2-3 minutes
• Check for oil leaks around the oil level sensor while engine is running
• Turn off the engine and verify proper oil level on dipstick
• Cycle ignition to ON position and verify oil level warning light functions correctly and extinguishes
• Use a scan tool if available to confirm oil level sensor is reading correctly
• Test drive vehicle and verify no warning lights illuminate
